Within the last hour, there has been a collision and a derailment between a HST which was 43300 and an Azuma which is 800 109 according to various Facebook groups. There is considerable damage to both loco and unit, I just hope that nobody was hurt as a result.
LNER Twitter has confirmed that as a result of this incident, the 23:33 London Kings Cross to Leeds has been cancelled (they had originally mentioned the derailment but they have since deleted the tweet in question)

Slightly concerning that the newer “Azuma” has derailed in what I assume was a low speed accident.

Firstly I hope there are no injuries.

Newness doesn't alter laws of physics... heavy object (Class 43) hits lighter object (Class 800) or vice versa, and the lighter one can move more including in this case derailing.

Just to state some facts:

This line is technically the Down Hull Goods at this point and is regularly used permissively by trains (more than one train moving in the section at once) entering the depot.

Many thanks for that, I'm sure most (like me) weren't aware of that fact.

There's been many bumps on or around Neville Hill over the years, I'm sure it won't be the last. Happily it seems no one injured.

Just seen this elsewhere myself - the way the Azuma looks to have sort of concertinaed is a bit of a feat! Feels like it may have some hallmarks of the Plymouth collision of a few years ago

Is that the one where a driver had been permissively signalled into a platform that was already occupied but due to it not being a 'normal operating movement' and approached on a curve didn't realise which line they were directed onto?
IIRC the RAIB report mentioned deficiencies in FGW driver training as one of underlying causes, though I am not saying that that necessarily applies in this case since the facts are not yet known.

The driver had a poor understanding of how permissive working actually worked in that Plymouth incident if I remember rightly.

Looking at pictures I've seen of this evening's prang it looks like the impact speed might've been a bit higher than at Plymouth. Permissible speed into the DHGL is 15mph.

to be fair the the interaction between a heavy hst motor coach off perhaps 70 tonnes would be very different to a perhaps 40 tonnes coach also you only need a perhaps few inches above the normal buffer level off a hst for them to override the hst even at near zero speed

2+9 hst is approx 410 Tons, 9 car Azuma 431 ton. However you’re correct that the heavier object hit a stationary lighter object. If the HST has its parking brake applied the energy had to go somewhere and that was back through the azuma. 15 mph speed limit I believe at this location

Good Morning,

There has been a low speed derailment of an empty passenger train within the depot near Leeds. No one has been injured in this incident.

The following alterations will be in place to LNER services:

  • Some services between Leeds and London Kings Cross will be cancelled
  • Some services between Lincoln and London Kings Cross will be cancelled or amended to not run between Lincoln and Newark North Gate

Disruption is expected to continue until approximately 18:30.

The 6.38 Shipley to KX was cancelled this morning so I assume it has something to do with this?

Noticed on twitter that no one was injured which is good news.

yep. Has seriously hit the Lincoln service as well. I guess the 800/2 are stuck in NL.

I guess this does show an advantage in short sets as LNER will be 9 coaches short for a while. Rather than 5 if it was a pair. I suspect the HST stock will be back in service tomorrow with another power car.

Be interesting to see the cause.

Went past this on the way to work this morning, a bit of a mess. It also looked there was a bogie further down the train that was derailed. Going to take a while to sort out I imagine.

Depends on if they're confident that there's no damage to the Mk3s! Personally I'd have thought that the Mk3s will need to go through a full exam before they can be put back into service to make sure there's no structural damage.

I'm rather baffled at quite a collision here.

Hopefully HST set NL65 is spare somewhere. Or if the coaches aren't affected, then 2 power cars off NL65 will be of great use.

If it was me, I wouldn't be too bothered about fixing the HST as they're being withdrawn soon anyway. Providing LNER services can manage without an HST in this case.

That aside, thank goodness there were no injuries!

the power car possibly won’t be fixed but the coaches may be heading to EMR.

the Azuma will be missed of course as it is a hybrid. So one less to get away from the wires. I know in daily service they have Hybrids (and HSTs) operating entire diagrams under the wires, so it will probably only be in issue when diversions are required.

suspect the damage looks worse then it is because it is a crumple zone. But will be surprised if it isn’t away getting fixed until spring.

Do TOCs have insurance to cover this sort of incident, or do they have to fund repairs or replacements themselves?

Damage to 800109 said to be significant on 4-cars; on the HST 43300 will likely not re-enter service, 43308 on the other end is undamaged.
