Afternoon

Just a very quick thread to ask if anyone has experienced any issues with Northern? I've submitted two applications in the last few weeks and both have been marked as 'End of Process' meaning I haven't passed the paper sift. However, I have only found this out by logging onto my Deutsche Bahn account. I have NOT had any e-mails from Northern to confirm I have been unsuccessful. I'm surprised at this because I recieved e-mails from them earlier in the year when I had previously been unsuccessful. Has anyone else experienced this?

Have you checked your Spam emails CJ? Sometimes they land in there....

Thanks for the replies.

To answer both of your questions - YES - I religiously check my junk/spam folder aswell as my inbox. I quickly learned that Northern's correspondence turns up in the spam folder for some reason.

The object of the thread was to see if people had experience of not getting any emails from Northern. Like I said, I've had two applications marked 'End of Process' and not even had anything from them in my spam folder! It's only happened recently - Northern did previously contact me earlier in the year when I had been unsuccessful for a couple of roles I applied to. This particular issue has only cropped up in the last few months.

The same happened with a Cross Country role I applied for in the summer - XC are also part of the Arriva family and use the Deutsche Bahn site too.

@C J Snarzell Do you mind me asking what the most recent role you applied for?

I've been waiting 6 weeks for a reply on mine so far.

If you haven't received anything from Northern it's likely that they are so busy with applications that they may still intend on emailing you once they have a list of people that aren't progressing onto the next stage.

The first role I've never heard anything back from was a trainee conductor based in Manchester Piccadily - I regularly log into my account on the Deutsche Bahn site and my application was marked as 'End of Process' four weeks ago but I've not had any contact from the HR people.

The most recent rejection was for a Call Centre Team Leader based in Leeds (which I still think is being advertised! ) and again the application is now marked 'End of Process' but no e-mail from them.

We discussed on this forum months ago that applications are fed through computers as part of the paper sift and may not be seen by human eyes if rejected at the early stages. Therefore, the 'unsuccessful' emails could very well be computer generated too.

Northern HR can be contacted on 01904 568101. You could think about calling them to explain what's not happening and they may be able to assist.

Thanks for the telephone number - I'll keep it in mind in case I need it in the future.

The HR people are extremely busy and I don't intend bothering them only to be told information I know already. Unfortunately, you never get feedback when you don't get through the paper sift so again it'll only be a wasted phone call.

The purpose of this thread was just to test the water to see if other forum members have experienced not being informed about 'End of Process' on their applications. It's a little bit frustrating but like I said in my previous post I suspect the initial paper sift is computerised. The rejection emails I've previously received from Northern are identical in their content and use the standard phrases like 'there gave been a high volume of applicants' and 'we have decided other candidates have skills more suited to the role'. Again this leads me to concluded that maybe the unsuccessful/rejection emails are generated automatically if your application doesn't pass the initial screening.

Thanks again for replying.

No problem CJ. The reason I shared the number was I had exactly the same happen as you describe ie. End of Process with no email. I explained what had happened to HR and within a couple of minutes I had received an email. Yes they are busy, but in my case I have found them helpful. Your point about whether it is automated is not one I can answer fully, however, they won't be typing an individual response to hundreds, perhaps thousands of people who have not got through the sift, whatever methodology used for the sift (this is the bit I I am unsure of, but again, you could ask HR) if you fail, you will receive a standard response. Good luck.

Hi Cj,

I’ve had the same, recently applied for a role then noticed the role had been taken down after a couple of days, checked my online account and it had changed to ‘End of process’ and haven’t had any confirmation of it changing and like you I always check my junk folder just in case it’s in there.

I'm currently in the same boat as you, I received an email about a month ago saying please allow two weeks to process. I think I've developed an email refresh addiction!

In answer to the OP, I've applied to a couple of positions in the past with Northern and each time I received a response, albeit after about 3 months.

think it's just down to staff shortages as they recruited for HR not long ago, if they want you they will ring you, but don't rely on emails, they just can't cope with the vast amount that apply

If in doubt or have any questions the best way to get your answer quickly is to give HR a call direct.

They are the only ones to be fully aware of what’s happening as ‘end of process’ doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not through to the next stage. It can mean that the job application has ended for applicants.

I’ve had application in process since September is this the norm with northern? Or should I just assume I’ve been unsuccessful and the automated application system just hasn’t updated?

I’m in the same boat. I’ve assumed they have too many people to sift through but who knows!!

If your application is marked as 'Application in Process' then you are fine - the application is still live. It entirely depends on the role you applied for but you can be waiting weeks or months for any type sort of update.

However, like I've previously said - if the application is marked as 'End of Process' I'm afraid it is game over. All I suggest is that you keep constantly checking your account on the Deutsche Bahn site every once in a while to monitor any changes as you may not get any notifications.

All the best anyway.

thanks for that, yes they are marked still in process and have been for several months, I guess I was being optimistic in the fact that because I’d applied for an engineering role I would miss the long weight that on board staff seem to have.
I guess not
