Seeing as they’ll both be powered by MTU engined HSTs vs VP185s, I assume they’ll be no performance loss, despite the extra carriage.

No the power output is the same. I'm not convinced passenger loadings on the MML require 2+9 sets anyway.

It would be an operational nightmare too. Platform 5 at Sheffield would be no use to turn around in anymore, plus you'd then be too long for stations such as Chesterfield.

I'm sure this must have been covered but I can't find it: what's the difference between EMR and LNER HSTs that allows the LNER ones to run after the PRM deadline?

The DfT audited the HSTs and the LNER need less dispensations. It’s in this thread somewhere.

Why not? Is it the non-folding armrests?
Often in combination with the mk3 tables or seat spacing in airline.
the IC70 crash performance also isn't great which is why virtually everyone else has replaced them.

Yes, I think it was mentioned a while back in another discussion. Obviously you wouldn’t have to change the whole train.
But it is easier to replace more compliant coaches and swap the order going to the scrap yard...

Per this article, the 360/1s from GA that are operating the EMR Electrics services won’t be refurbished/uprated to 110mph when they first enter service

I'd question a couple of things in that article!

It talks about replacing the 222s with older 360s, when surely they are around the same age anyway! Worse, it then says

Environmentally-friendly bi-mode trains that are being introduced to the remainder of the East Midlands Railway network will not be brought in on our section of the network.

Someone clearly knows nothing about trains or indeed the environment if they're trying to suggest that the bi-modes are more environmentally friendly than pure EMUs...

I believe the 360s are only about 1 year older, but I could be wrong on that.

I'll make sure urine is suitably extracted when I see some of the senior staff soon...

It’s confirmed the 360s will enter service as they were with GA. Un-refurbished with 3+2 in standard and 2+2 in first.

Although of course EMR are going to refurbish them. The plan is 2+2 in standard and 2+1(?) in first.

Having just got off an LNER HST most EMR passengers are going to think these are pretty smart new trains when they get them! Whilst I find the IC70 seats in the existing EMR HSTs comfy and smart enough, the scale of the interior refurb on the LNER sets looks so different that the avg passenger is going to think it's all new and be fairly impressed - unless they have specific disability issues that the sets don't meet - but that will not be a large proportion of travellers.

Is it known when the 1st LNER sets will start coming across?

The real disappointment will come when the EMR Hitachi's get delivered... , tho I suspect they will be a decent step up from the Meridiens maybe.

To be honest, I think the Meridians are some of the best high-speed stock on the UK network - fast, reliable and an overall comfortable ride. Just depends on whether the 804s can match their performance

I'd have to agree, they've been let get quite tatty in recent years and could do with a refresh, but the seats are great and the cabin/ride is generally really good. Big step up from 220/1's and I find them considerably more comfortable than the HSTs. Less bouncy and better headrests for taller folks.

My only concern is they'd replace the decent seats with ones that are somehow less comfortable than a park bench

Yes, for a long distance DMU I agree with you. But after my LNER HST ride I got straight on an EMR Meridien and the in carriage noise levels from the engines is really pretty bad, and the vibration too. Slightly whiffy toilet too as is often remarked.

As mentioned by Jozhua the interiors are now tatty which is a shame. That's another reason why jo(e) public will see the LNER HSTs as smarter. V tired upholstery on the Meridien's now, tho not so bad in first class due to the leather I guess.

There’s no doubt about this, it’s explicitly stated in the 2020 timetable consultation FAQ section, and has already been quoted in the discussion in that thread.

They also say the 222s were introduced by Stagecoach.

The 'leather' in the Meridians is quite the worst in any of the UK first class coaches which have been subjected to it this far. It really is nasty.

The seat was quite saggy on the last Meridien I was on too, so more than just a seat cover issue. A shame as the basic seat is good

I guess I was mainly commenting on cleanliness, tho I did not make that clear.

It’s far, far, FAR nicer than the leather on the Virgin Voyagers, trust me.
