Two separate issues today have caused problems north of Preston today:

1) Firstly a TPE Scotland bound service between Preston and Lancaster broke down- approximately 08:15- moved by another 350 at about 10:30 ish.

2) Soon after, one of the Virgin Trains services affected by the TPE train issue encountered overhead power lines which had been brought down near Garstang.

As of 13:15- 1S39 07:15 Birmingham New Street to Glasgow Central- which was the VT service involved- scheduled to arrive Lancaster 09:10- was still unable to move.

I believe 2x57s have been sent to help move the trains- not certain if this is the case.

It's pandemonium at Carlisle, hundreds of people to get on coaches down to Preston.

Think our 12:00 from Glasgow was 3 trains worth of people due to cancelled earlier ones...

From RTT, it looks like northbound through Lancaster was stopped from about 0815, and southbound from about 1045.
9M52 (0852 VT ex Edinburgh) might just be on the move after almost 2 hours stopped at Lancaster.
There were delays over Beattock this morning too.

I think VT are/were intending to use 9M52 (2x221) as a train to evacuate passengers from 1S39 onto then send them back towards Preston. I'm under the impression it terminated at Lancaster before doing so.

According to VT "it has been confirmed that both lines will remain blocked for the remainder of the day."

In the end I've caught the Carlisle to Newcastle service and then go down to Birmingham International from there.

Started the morning in Inverness at 7.55, going to be a long old day!

I’m on the Highland Sleeper northbound tonight. Any idea if that will get through.
Or could it possibly be diverted to the ECML?

I just called CS. They have a phone call at 6pm and will call me back after that to tell me what’s happening.

I hope it goes well for you tonight mate. Caledonian Sleeper is one of the few TOCs that I don’t get alterations sent through on Tyrell so unfortunately I’m unable to give you any further information.

I wonder if CS have the capability of diverting any of their affected services over the Settle and Carlisle? Would of course require diesel traction and train crew with appropriate route knowledge/signal boxes over the S&C to be open etc. etc.

Will probably be diverted via the ECML as you suggest.

I don't think they do that any more. Sadly.

Crews have never had that route signed, maybe in Virgin days but not for the last 15 years anyway. No locos capable of supplying power anyway.

1M92 07:10 Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport is cancelled tomorrow due to “damage to overhead electric wires.”

Have any Virgin sets actually gotten north of Preston today? If they haven't then there will definitely be cancellations tomorrow.

I’ve had to come from Edinburgh via east coast to York then Manchester and home , east coast train was pretty much full as it left Edinburgh with folks off the 14.18 TPE which was only going to Carlisle

All Sleepers cancelled tonight (from Twitter)

"Service Update: We regret that all Sleeper services will be CANCELLED tonight due to power issues on the West Coast Main Line. We're in the process of arranging alternative transport, please standby for updates to follow..."

Between the parallel lines
Apparently the Fort William Sleepers might run, but only between Fort William and Edinburgh & vice versa (ie. NOT to and from London Euston).
