Yes, and they were classified as 43s in order to avoid renumbering them.

Rather conveniently, that was in the numbering range of the type 4 loco, which happened to match the HST power car's engine perfectly. It's almost like they planned it!

My recollection is that when HST’s first appeared, the intention was to operate sets in fixed formations. This was the reason for the classification 253 & 254.

It didn’t take long for reality to set in that keeping each set as a fixed rake impacted overall availability, so to be more flexible, with power car swaps etc, the unit designations were quietly dropped.

As mentioned above, the power cars always carried their own numbers, with either the W or E prefix in the early days.
Yes - I can well remember seeing 253s in the early days with different numbers at each end - just couldn’t remember how long before the penny dropped that the 43xxx number was the one that mattered

A half remembered exchange of opinions in the early days of sectorisation, connected with the inability of some depots to fit the correct brake blocks on our (FDAA) 47s.; an Intercity depot talked demeaningly about freight locos "... and they've got their b----- numbers on the ends!"
Err 253s ????

They said they hope to announce confirmed timing with fares today so maybe they're only releasing the timings on RTT today and fares later. I hope not though.

Must be some form of hold up with the fares - presume this is on LNER's side.

Anyone know if you can book to get on the tour mid-route as I am wanting to join day 3 at Newcastle.

gee whizz. Just wait and all will be revealed. Maybe, just maybe, LNER think that releasing tickets & info for a jolly the day after their actual customers and staff had a terrible day due to a dewirement might not be the best look.

If you click 'Book Now' it should open a new window.
Yeaah it does for me, and then I fill everything out and it says all seats are available and then nothing happens when i click confirm your booking. Doesnt even ask for payment details.

I did. It didnt even ask me for payment details. It says please confirm you wish to place your booking with UK railtours then nohting happens. Not sure if its a problem on my end which would be annoying.
