Haven't got time to type them up as I'm going bed.

Will be
0500 ex MAN
0628 ex LAN (Likely to be 007)

Subject to change of course

Will check Genius around 0600 then back to bed for 2 hours.

I am on the Lancaster Manchester air. Got on at Preston. Lots of carriages. The seats are quite thin, but roomy. Windows are sited adjacent to seats. Can't see much as its dark. Train seems quite speedy. Good start to the day.

1S35 (0710 ex Airport) started at Piccadilly today, "due to a problem at the depot".
Hopefully still a 397, as I'm picking it up at Lancaster later.

No, VSTP from Ardwick so not a 397

No formation change on Journey Check so assume it is a 350 rather than a 185. EDIT: Read elsewhere it is 185136.

The preceding train from Manchester Airport to Edinburgh was cancelled for traincrew availability so I had assumed that 350 was available to cover.

I was also on the 0628 from Lancaster. My first time on one of these trains. They do seem to accelerate faster and there was more leg room than the 350s.
The seats aren’t quite as uncomfortable as they look either. The worst thing is the ride. It’s absolutely terrible. Loud banging noises and vibration. I think it actually gave me a headache.
CAF don’t seem very good at making trains. The new Northern ones seem to have a similar problem. I wrongly assumed the protracted testing period would have identified and rectified these problems.

Agreed with the ride. Coupled with thin seats it is quite uncomfortable. The new Northern 331s are quite similar in that respect. Speed was great though.

Just 001 out today.

Edit: It's a training diagram. Currently at MIA awaiting to work 5S78 to EDB.

Are TPE hoping to have all of the Novas in operation for the timetable change on 15/12/19?

I should have mentioned that RTT are showing 397s and 80xs in the new TT but not 68s.

No mention of any short forms on Scottish services on Journey Check - do TPE still have enough 350s to cover until 15 Dec?

There were at least two Scotland diagrams covered by 185s yesterday so it would appear that a few 350s have already left TPE.

They've given up 3 of their 350s (350401, 350404 and 350405). A combination of services cancelled anyway to driver training and use of the odd 185 seems to be making up for loss of 350s.

No, definitely not all Novas in operation. The timing loads in RTT for many services may be for 397s and 802s but that doesn't mean they will be used.

https://twitter.com/Clinnick1/status/1197939692043481088 says 20 Novas from 16 December - four of which will be 68+Mk5, the rest 397s and 802s.

A better indication of the number in use for 397s and 68+Mk5s is found by tracing workings to Longsight Car MD rather than Ardwick in RTT.

Are the ECML Edinburgh extensions, as new services, timed on the assumption they’ll be 802s? Or put the other way could 185s run the services, or will they be cut back to Newcastle if any 802s aren’t available?

Lets try and second guess what might happen with the 397s. I reckon that the Anglo-Scottish diagrams from 16 December are the following:

and 2 diagrams for the Liverpool services

Diagram I

1S57 1212 Liverpool Lime Street to Glasgow Central

1M87 1205 Glasgow Central to Liverpool Lime Street
1S74 1612 Liverpool Lime Street to Glasgow Central
5S74 2001 Glasgow Central to Polmadie Car M.D.

Note that overnight stabling of the TPE trains in Scotland moves from Corkerhill to Polmadie from the December timetable change.

In the first week, Diagram H starts at Ardwick (5S30 0440 Ardwick T.M.D to Manchester Piccadilly) and Diagram E (5W67 0145 Manchester Piccadilly to Ardwick T.M.D) ends there. Also, 1S85 terminates at Carlisle and 1M90 starts at Carlisle. This is all unwound for the first week in January when the schedules indicate all units are at Longsight (3 units), Polmadie (2 units), Preston Carriage Sidings (2 units) and Glasgow Central (1 unit) with nothing scheduled off Ardwick.

On the Liverpool workings, there has been some indication in the Railway press that 185s will work initially with 397s favoured on the Manchester services. This appears to be consistent with two empty workings to and from Manchester.

Diagram 9 appears to end with 5J81 2111 Preston to Manchester Victoria and there is also a 5C89 2334 Ardwick T.M.D to Preston suggesting 185s.

These run until 14 February at which point there is a change to the diagrams with the introduction of interworking between the Manchester and Liverpool routes.

That would appear to mean that there can be, at most, 6 397 diagrams from the timetable change in December, but 3 (A,B,C) appears possible if Polmadie isn't ready. Given there are only 2 at present, this seems pretty tight.

It looks like there might then be a step up in the new year and another in mid-February, the same day it appears that the number of 68+Mk5 diagrams appears to increase so maybe 10 397 diagrams from 16 February.

Of course, substitutions by 185s and 350s are easy in the short term by simply sending units from Ardwick instead of Longsight and once they are in the cycle, won't be substituted by 397s - guess it depends on how quickly 185s go off lease.

Might fancy a decent long ride on one of these on 23rd Dec as I'll be up North over Christmas - what do we reckon is the chance of a solid diagram or two by then? Or am I likely to be waiting for next year?
