Something struck me this last week on returning to the forum... Sheffield feels like it’s been left behind on the Northern England new rolling stock bonanza of the last few years, LNER has its shiny new 801 fleet streaking through Doncaster, York, Leeds etc... TPE has rolled out its new Nova fleet in Manchester, Leeds, Scarborough, Liverpool etc, Hull Trains rocking up with its new 802s, even Northern is keeping it’s shiny new trains in Manchester and West Yorkshire... to add insult to injury, the MML isn’t being wired, HS2 has diverted its mainline past Sheffield after the debacle over Sheffield Victoria being pushed by the councillors of Sheffield... the shining light is the cast of LNER HSTs for the next 12 months, followed by the delights of the 180 fleet before we eventually get the 804 fleet in three years from now... at least we have the wonderful purple 222 unit to shield our eyes from ! Oh, we did the 399 fleet too... whoop whoop !

For now, Sheffield has a pretty bad deal compared to much of the North in the new train department, but all will change when the 195s (hopefully!) enter service on the 15th December.

I'm quite happy with the refurbished Class 170s and 185s, to be fair. Maybe I'm just lucky in so far as I'm always shuttling to Doncaster and back.

Do you mean 185s? I agree. They both seem like new trains and we’ve been even getting 158s on the Adwick recently.

I'm not so sure, don't think it is as simple as that. Having lived in both Sheffield and Manchester, in terms of rolling stock Sheffield is not hugely different to Manchester Victoria. Hope Valley, Mid-Cheshire Line, Buxton Line, Caldervale Line, Manchester-Southport, Ribble Valley Buxton Line etc which are heavily operated by Pacers and 150s. And Sheffield has a cleaner footbridge than Victoria that doesn't choke passengers to death from train fumes.

The infrastructure of the station is also well past its sell by date, a track layout dating back to 1972!
It desperately needs remodelling, higher speeds, bi directional signalling, new bay platform at the north end between 8 & 6(yes would need to demolish cleaners messroom)etc.
It really should have been done before Derby, it’s passenger numbers are over double that of Derby.

185s are nice if there is a chance of a seat, but 99% of the time they are always rammed especially between sheffield and manchester (No Nova fleet for our side of the pennines, just an inadequate 3 carriage 185)

A 185 that you have to reserve bike space for, and as the poster on Doncaster station says: it's for the Nova fleet. That's the Nova fleet we're not getting then ... Did tweet TPE about this, no response.

Had a refurbished 158 with USB plugs on the Sheffield-Adwick last week, followed by a refurbished 150 the day after, and a 142 with leaky windows the day after that.

222's could do with a good clean, externally and internally; I think the headrests in 2nd used to be red, rather than black. Doesn't seem to be as bad on the 158's or HSTs.

195s arriving imminently, most of the pacers will be gone soon and replaced with 15Xs. Yes the new TPEs aren’t coming to Sheffield but are planned to be doubled in length

I have said before that the whole idea of new trains for Northern is a con for those of us who will be getting 30 year old units which have been tarted up. Both of the services through Castleford will and are slowly having Pacers replaced by 150/1s and the like which is supposed to be an improvement, I don't think so.

I'm just looking forward to the day Crosscountry's voyagers get replaced, but given the franchise has been on short term direct awards I can't imagine there will be movement for several years, despite them being horrifically overcrowded and unpleasant.

The state of the 222 units is absolutely appalling and has been for years... Sheffield does seem to get a raw deal rolling stock wise, but at least you have nice clean (at least environmentally) trams unlike Leeds.

The trams are nice when they run !! (the tram train service to Rotherham is a disaster at the moment ;) )

No HS3 for Sheffield as well. The connections by both rail and road to Manchester are some of the worst for 2 neighbouring cities in the country and yet we’re made to make do with the woefully inadequate Hope Valley line and the Peak District roads that are frequently closed.

People mention the 195’s but some of the 195’s we’re getting will be 2 car units and we will be the last place in the North to still be using 144’s.

Will we ever get shiny new trains once the 185’s are finished?

No electrified lines is an insult to injury, largest city in the country (along with Nottingham and Derby) without wires yet once upon a time we were one of the first to have them until the line was closed...

Manchester, Liverpool have how many electrified lines? We can’t even get one!

Lived in Sheffield all my life (I’m 25 now) but moved to Shipley last year as I work in the Leeds region however I go back to Sheffield every weekend. I use the Airedale and Wharfedale lines on a daily basis and they are light years ahead of what we have back in Sheffield. Whenever I go back to Sheffield in the weekends I always have a slight feeling of resentment, might sound silly but I definitely do feel slightly hard done to by, especially when people from regions that already have electrified lines ask for more!

Not being funny but at least in Manchester you have a choice!

The difference being that Manchester also has a main station, Piccadilly, with 3 tph to London (11 coach capacity) an electric commuter train network and trains to all corners of the country.

It is funny that most places have this argument. But I don’t think Sheffield is any worse off than other cities under the EMR TOC.

Totally agree, Sheffield always gets left behind. The TPE south transpennine route has been overcrowded for years now. The refurbished 185s look great inside but just aren't practical for high passenger numbers from Sheffield to Manchester. The old Northern stock isn't as bad as the image it often gets portrayed. At least there's seats rather than wasted space. EMR have tired 222s but plenty of seats and the 158s are another good choice especially if 4 carriages. Currently on a cross country high speed train to Sheffield, lovely interior, plenty of seats and a touch of nostalgia. Lovely.

Funnily enough all the cities on the Cinderella line (the MML) haven’t got it as good as the majority of major cities in the country. It’s obvious why it’s known as the Cinderella line...

But replacement is due. Up to last year it was more modern than ECML in rolling stick terms.

not going to dispute that it should be on an electric line. But it is getting improved. Likewise give me a 158 over a 185 to get to Manchester any day.

Lincoln also had no pre-privatisation stock running to it. (True until October) Is it also a graveyard? But again improving with the 156s replacing the 153s

As a point of comparison, with the new TfW and West Coast franchises, North and Mid Wales will see every piece of passenger rolling stock replaced over the next three years. (Only the Class 67s are surviving the changeover.)

Over here, we'll have never had it so good!

I commute Chesterfield-Sheffield. The last time I saw an electric train was in the summer, passing a Pendolino on the M6. My son said it was a tram because it had a pantograph...

to be honest. Getting 156s and 170s is a nice safe option compared to what we are seeing happening on TPE and Anglia.

But the original poster does have a point. The West Midlands about to get their 2nd batch of new trains so they can cast off their old to the East. I know that happened in BR but interesting one franchise can constantly provide new rolling stock and another can’t.

Me too. Standing from York to just outside Derby is quite funny. Now I always alight at Sheffield & get a class 222 to Derby. Miles better unit & it doesn’t rattle like ur misses.
