From next week, no doubt you would be directed to the through TPE Edinburgh-York-Liverpool service (if they are running, that is).

Strange, why would it go through the ECML if it is a straight run on the WCML to Glasgow? Doesn't really make much sense. I've used TPE many times and never really had a problem with them going to/from Glasgow.

It is new service.

Liverpool - Manchester- Leeds - York - Newcastle- Edinburgh.

introducing it is a higher priority to TPE then running the existing services. But at least it maintains a direct link to Scotland and is quicker then a bus. (Although now West Coast is under first group I am surprised they don’t accept tickets on those services with a shorter coach ride)

Hmm but my destination is Glasgow not Edinburgh, they are responsibile for getting me to Glasgow, not to Edinburgh which is an hour or so away by coach to Glasgow and that extra hour could be used to get me to Glasgow directly. So i don't really see the point in that unless you're joking of course.

So much training going on at the moment it's only to be expected
It isn’t on anything like the scale we’ve seen, no TOC since privatisation unaffected by industrial action has made such a hash of running their existence timetable whilst introducing new stock and/or routes

Unfortunately I am not. But I expect for you it will be coach to Preston the train. Although the may be less likely to cancel Glasgow as they have no alternative.

like most TPE passengers recently expect disruption and be thankful if your journey is smooth.

Surely given the time of year and the numbers of people travelling they would be better prepared, but logic doesn't seem to exist on the railways anymore! Also, the new timetable change will probably not go very smoothly. I will be on the 09:26 service to Glasgow.

Unfortunately not. Luckily for TPE. No one wants the class 185s so they at least have half a plan B.

As i have said I have had no problems at all with TPE going up to Glasgow just a bit concerned about heading up with all these recent cancellations

Glasgow is 42 - 45 minutes away by an express train every 15 minutes (unless of course there are engineering work as there are between Christmas & New Year).

I'm travelling to Glasgow on the 23rd to see family over the Christmas period. All these Edinburgh cancellations do not give me great confidence that my Glasgow train will run. Are TPE running coaches on the full route if a train is cancelled or are you pretty much left stranded? I have an advance ticket so I'm pretty restricted to the 1 train.

If the train is cancelled they will get you to Glasgow by Coach if ticket acceptance not in place, you won't be left stranded.

The general tenor of the thread was about Manchester-Scotland cancellations, with folk also saying that Edinburgh was more impacted than Glasgow (seems about equal to me, but there are better alternatives for Glasgow).
My point was to say that from next week the Edinburgh options are improved by the new direct service to Manchester via the ECML.
For Glasgow, we'll have direct Liverpool WCML services to add to the option mix.
There are also frequent Avanti/Northern combinations if you have a flexible ticket.

Which there is - and quite extensive engineering at that (complete replacement of a junction at Haymarket).

I saw the 397 that (presumably) was meant to do that service pass Manchester Piccadilly at usual scheduled time. It had some red/orange cable going between the 2 pans. What's the cable for?

That was quick! :) Why might it be needed?
The 397s have two pantographs, one at each end of the train, each directly above a transformer. However, they are designed to run with only one pantograph raised (usually the rear pan). The 25 kV bus line essentially connects each pantograph with the transformer at the other end of the train, so that both transformers can be powered off a single raised pantograph.

I was at Manchester Piccadilly today to hear the station PIS announce the cancellation of the 1226 Edinburgh service (train fault).
Edinburgh passengers were directed to the 1235 TP service to Hull, and to change at Leeds for "an east coast service".
Where they would be just in time for a cancelled Liverpool-Edinburgh and have to wait another hour.
No advice for Preston-Carlisle passengers.

I guess the internal bus failed?

I don't get you? Having a 25kV bus line along the roof is a common design feature - it's the same on 80X and Pendolinos, it's just not coloured red. The 25kV bus on the 397s is definitely not temporary.

It looked like a temporary wire that had been thrown on last minute, not attached in an orderly fashion.

Last night at Preston was one unholy mess. The brand-spanking new, much hyped, Glasgow Central to Liverpool Lime Street 1847 service was curtailed at Preston due to unavailable train crew, and it all rather descended into chaos. During the journey, it suddenly emerged at Motherwell that this wouldn't be a direct service at all, and between there and Preston we heard a bus was being arranged, then taxis, then merely 'onward transport'. Platform staff had no idea of the situation at Preston and some passengers lost their cool to say the least. Eventually taxis were arranged and I was one of the lucky ones, travelling to Liverpool and then beyond as part of a through ticket, being put into one of the first taxis to arrive.

Perhaps this is an unfair comparison, but last time I was forced to take alternative transport on my home from Glasgow, Virgin had taxis ready and waiting at Preston for onward journeys. Perhaps this sort of unbridled chaos is atypical of TPE when things go wrong, but it looked dreadful on the first day of their new service. I'll be sticking with Avanti going forward, no question.

The 18.11 Edinburgh-liverpool is running 43 minutes late, and the 19.30 Edinburgh- Liverpool is cancelled due to an issue with the train crew.

From experience, Preston's station staff do not have the blindest bit of a clue as to what to do in the event of mass strandings. Their handling of the flooding and bridge related incidents a few years ago were utterly appalling. I took great pleasure in whacking VT with a considerable quantity of Delay Repay to make the point - if things are handled well in disruption that isn't the railway's fault I often don't claim, but this time I most definitely did - every last bit of it.

5 trains cancelled today between Manchester/Liverpool to Edinburgh. I've noticed the problem seems to be services going west to east and vice versa, the Glasgow run seems fine compared to Edinburgh
