For all the 'real world' members who are championing c2c's 'Part Time Working' if it suits you so well, I guess you'll be submitting your applications?
I also couldn't help but notice that C2C have now advertised for TRAINEE part time drivers, looks as though the claim for an ABUNDANCE of applications from Qualified Drivers fell flat on it's face.

As another member mentioned, this is a reduced hours link dressed up as part time working.

Was such a great opportunity for qualifieds and so many applied they have had to put it out to trainees.

Had to? Or chose to? Once again with your assumptions.....do you know how many they were looking for in the first place? Do you know that no qualifieds actually went for it?

Or is this just your sheer guesswork again? And you had that much faith in your own argument you had to wait months to comment again. Quality.

C2C has two driver depots.

All the ‘part time’ roles were snapped up at Shoeburyness straight away. Mostly by drivers on the wind down ie near retirement, pension pot built. No external recruitment was required at this depot.

East Ham is a younger depot on the whole. And for many who are building pensions this isn’t seen as a feasible option at the current level of service. Albeit a tempting one hours wise.

Additionally with the new drivers roster coming in December, you are actually travelling in more days per week on the part time roster. I guess maybe calling it ‘reduced hours’ would make more sense in my view.

Flexible working is welcome, and should be increased on the railway, but I can’t help thinking there aren’t many qualified drivers who would want to work half the hours and yet still have anti social start times at 04XX etc.

There’s flexible working/reduced hours at my place but it tends to lead to working “family friendly” shifts in my experience.

I'm not so sure personally mate. I know there's quite a few at my place that are peppering management for more part time and job share options.....and that's even with the unsociable hours.....and there won't be many worse than our depot for unsociable hours. I can only speak for my TOC obviously.

We've just got the top link for the family friendly stuff. Those currently on job shares etc still have the unsociable hours aspect obviously.

With regards to the trainee positions. Once qualified does anyone know if you would be allowed to continue a job outside the industry on a part time flexible basis. For example I currently drive a taxi and I’m presuming I wouldn’t be able to continue with this to top up my income. Does it state in contracts that you can’t have another job or can you ask for special permission, thanks.

Fair enough. It it works for people then that’s all to the good. As I say, we need more of this kind of thing on the railway.

I agree totally.

I think much like anyone full time if it suits your life away from the railway the part time option is just as good as anything else.

There's always gonna be people who it doesn't work for that'll slag the part time thing off (as above) but that happens with the full time hours as well to be fair.....there's people I know that wouldn't touch the 5 day week pattern and others who wouldn't do anything but the 5 day week.

Like you say ......if it works for people then it's only a positive.

A five day week must be pretty brutal (I suspect you work for a TOC which was run a certain, well known, beardy businessman until recently :D). Although I guess shorter shifts must be some compensation?

Personally I’d always rather four longer shifts (and an extra day off) than five shorter ones. Horses for courses, though, as you say.

Yes the reason I waited months to reply was because you championed the idea so much and was so confident that it was a brilliant opportunity and they would be inundated with qualified drivers and that I was completely wrong when infact it was you who was.

It is OBVIOUS they had less to no qualifieds apply for it as C2C don't normally have direct access to mainline and guess what the new vacancy is direct to mainline.

4 days a week IS NOT PART TIME when aslefs full time objective is for 4 days and if I'm not mistaken 4 days a week is being discussed or coming to c2c.

This is a poor opportunity for qualifeds and is no way part time.

But you carry on championing this.

It is actually for trainees it says so on their website. There may be another for qualified drivers I'm not sure. Who would complain at a 4/5 day week for that money it's good especially if you are supporting your other half lol

as a family man trying to get into the industry I have applied the trainee position, cant argue with the hours as someone trying to change careers, passed all the assessments with Freightliner last year but was not successful at DMI, so hope that might help but again not holding my breath! Do we know how many people c2c are looking for?

I agree with this. This is kinda a sly way to get the drivers in for peak time give them a shift that's less then 6 hours = no pnb. If they really wanted to do part time shift then flexible working is btr which I believe is one or two weeks on and off.

And yes the shifts from December is changing. I heard there was far too many short jobs when in effect means your coming in more days (6 hour shift would take you 3 days to make 18 hours whereas 9 hour shift would take you 2 days)

There may well be something in your contract about not working for other railway employers due to the hidden regs etc. but that wouldn’t cover anything outside the industry and, frankly, how would they know if you were doing something completely unrelated?

There are many drivers who do other things outside work, be that voluntary or paid work.

I’d think very carefully about doing too much beyond your main job, though, from a fatigue management perspective.

It's exactly this.

It's a cheap way for the company to get in drivers to do the peak time extras and then send them on their way rather than paying a full time driver to have a pnb and doing the SAME AMOUNT OF DAYS as a full time driver is not part time but some people on here can't understand this.

I don't know why any drivers would support this as if you are full time it is a disadvantage cos where you would have had a short morning job or done this part time job have a pnb then do some shunts or sat spare the part timer will do it and you'll be stuck with the long job

Also it makes it less likely they will bring in REAL part time because they've got these lot doing the jobs now.

Not knocking it for trainees as it's a way to get a licence but for full time this is madness

Idk how it went through. Job sharing would have been so much better.

Only thing that's happening (shunters that are going mainline that have to wait 2 years to go FT) and now with the new trainee is people will get the key, do the part time thing for a while then apply elsewhere for qualified. Some tocs don't even care about being the 2 year experience anymore.

I have heard they are looking for 8. But not sure if it will be split 4/4 with internal applicants of if all 8 will be recruited externally

I thought Virgin's (as they were) 5 day week had a week of rest days every 5th week, so is an average 4 day week anyway, with shift lengths like a 4 day week as you AVERAGE 35 hours a week - but obviously the 5th week is 0 hours. The 35 hours for that week has to go into the other 4 weeks.

Totally agree that this is a poor part time option. Just shorter days, but you still have to come in as many days as you did full time. I expect the duties will be busy ones with no dead time in them.
Three days a week, or job share two days a week would be better. I also agree with the "conspiracy theory" - this is great for the company to get rid of that 9h00 full time duty, which had 5 and half hours of work, a PNB, and then "Work to instructions", shunt carriage sidings if required, or route refresh on the end.

Starting out as a trainee, people will be all over it, and who can blame them? I would've done. But I can see why there are suspicions that it's a cost saving/testing the water exercise.

Slightly related - can anyone remember in the early days of privatisation C2C (or it may have been LTS Rail before they got kicked out) announcing some pie in the sky brainstorming when they wanted London commuters to be Guards (back when they still had them - and the slam door stock too!) on their train to work in the morning, and back home in the evening for the peak hour extras?

It strikes me that you two should just agree to disagree on this - it’s a minor difference of opinion which has become very heated.

Let’s play nicely chaps, we are all part of the ASLEF brotherhood, after all :D.

If you have another job or part time job they want you to declare it to them. Because they can then look to see if you are more at risk of having an incident due to being fatigued. There have been previous full time drivers driving cabs at weekends or on annual leave / rest weeks but I’m not sure they had told the company they were doing it. If someone is injured or killed and you haven’t declared it then it wouldn’t look good on the investigation.

Thanks for the response. Might go against me then being a cabbie as I would still need to supplement my income on the reduced driver hours and Salary. No harm in applying though I guess. Cheers

If it's a part time position you are applying for, then I don't think it would be scrutinised as much as if you were a full time driver.
As long as you declare the Cab work and agree with the company on the maximum hours in your working week, you should be able to come to an amicable agreement.

Good luck in your application.

Is there anyone on here that’s gone from being a part time driver to full time at c2c? Or does anyone know if they could allow u to work full time instead once you’ve passed you’re training?

The part time roster only starts today.
Apparently first group of trainees who came from shunters are contracted part time for 6 months before going full time, any more courses from shunters or external will be contracted part time for two years.

The current rule is that for any future courses you have to be part time for 2 years before you can go full time. Then it will be on seniority basis but there have to be full time vacancies to move into.

I’m all for part time but this isn’t my idea of part time. I want part time shifts, work 2 days a week etc. I’d rather stay full time than entertain this.....

And that's fine. No-one is forced to apply for this. It is an option which may suit some people, it won't suit everyone, but it was never intended to.
