Not cancellations, but why do so many of the Edinburgh-Airport trains miss out Bolton, even outside the peaks? Seems a bit of a mess as far as the Bolton stop is concerned; a lot of non-peak northbound services also miss it out (11:07 Man Airport to Glasgow for example).

I am almost positive it is to discourage commuters on the Manchester-Bolton corridor from using it

Last night at Preston was one unholy mess. The brand-spanking new, much hyped, Glasgow Central to Liverpool Lime Street 1847 service was curtailed at Preston due to unavailable train crew, and it all rather descended into chaos. During the journey, it suddenly emerged at Motherwell that this wouldn't be a direct service at all, and between there and Preston we heard a bus was being arranged, then taxis, then merely 'onward transport'. Platform staff had no idea of the situation at Preston and some passengers lost their cool to say the least. Eventually taxis were arranged and I was one of the lucky ones, travelling to Liverpool and then beyond as part of a through ticket, being put into one of the first taxis to arrive.

Perhaps this is an unfair comparison, but last time I was forced to take alternative transport on my home from Glasgow, Virgin had taxis ready and waiting at Preston for onward journeys. Perhaps this sort of unbridled chaos is atypical of TPE when things go wrong, but it looked dreadful on the first day of their new service. I'll be sticking with Avanti going forward, no question.

No- I do NOT think it an unfair comparison. To me (train-airline either) what constitutes good, is SERVICE RECOVERY. In life stuff happens, but it is how you recover.

Fully agree. Virgin never let me down with arranging taxis in a good 12 years of travel but the first time it happens with TPE, a nightmare ensues.

Virgin might, but now try getting something similar from the likes of RyanAir or any of the other "cheap" flight suppliers.

Personally, because of all the cancellations it puts me off TPE going to Preston or Manchester, particularly when there are much better fares using Avanti and Northern. Until TPE get it together a little bit, I will not be travelling with them unless I have to.

Also all these cancellations put Lockerbie in a really bad situation, considering they get no Scotrail services and a very limited Avanti service, and Lockerbie isn't exactly quiet for people going to Glasgow, Edinburgh or Carlisle.

As a Lockardian I can confirm it has become an issue taken up by by MSPs and MP for what it is worth and has been front page news in the local paper for some weeks.

I feel sorry for the lot of you, you rightfully deserve a local service up to Glasgow. You shouldn’t have to rely on the shambles that are TPE.

Terrible today. Seemed like nearly all Ihe TPE Manchester to Scotland services were cancelled. I had a split ticket Manchester to Carlisle (splitting at Preston).

I got northern from pic to Preston and then Avanti from Preston to Carlisle. I read on the TPE site that ticket acceptance was in place but my tickets didn't get checked at all - assume I was correct that it was?

Thats disgraceful, It makes me wonder how TPE haven't had their franchise stripped. Personally, I would've kept the Glasgow - Manchester service under Virgin (when it got broken up) or transferred over to CrossCountry, TPE are unsuited to run it.

Something I have noticed is, the TPE services heading north seem to be on time from Manchester, but once they arrive into Preston they end 40 - 50 minutes late

One northbound journey was cancelled throughout, one was cancelled Airport - Preston, one Preston - Edinburgh, one Airport - Carlisle, and one Carlisle - Edinburgh.
Trans-Pennine services fared far worse, with not far short of 50% of eastbound departures from Manchester Victoria cancelled, some as far as York, some throughout. That included an instance of four scheduled departures in a row, three separate instances of three departures in a row, and five separate instances of two departures in a row.

Westbound isn't much better - in the last few months I've noticed a LOT more of the TPE services departing Newcastle (both those for Manchester Airport and those for Liverpool) have been cancelled due to a lack of train crew, sometimes at very short notice; on one occasion in September I was awaiting an Airport service which was cancelled with only minutes remaining until it was due to depart, with the next Liverpool service having already been cancelled. As the station staff advised those of us who had been waiting for the train with Airport Advance tickets that no ticket acceptance on LNER services would be permitted and we would have to wait for the next TPE service an hour later, myself and my partner had to purchase new tickets to allow us to connect with the Middlesborough-Airport train as it passed through York and avoid reaching the airport late.

When passing through Newcastle station in the late evening after work, I've also noticed the last TPE service of the day has been cancelled for this reason on several occasions.

Already 28 train cancellations on TransPennine routes today, seems that the Scotland service is unaffected (for now).

However there is already an update for the 18:56 Cleethorpes to Manchester that it will be delayed at Scunthorpe due to passenger disturbances... covering for something?

Why should that be "covering up for something"?
Sounds a perfectly legitimate reason to delay a train.

Either TPE now have a crystal ball if they can predict a passenger disturbance 13 hours in advance; OR
Someone made an error and used the wrong code?
This just looks like an error referring to the wrong day - it was updated ten minutes after yesterday's 18:53 from Manchester Airport had already arrived at Scunthorpe 40 minutes late. JourneyCheck often reports "is/will be delayed at" when the reality is "was delayed at some point before".

I see both today’s southbound services were cancelled due to “shortage of train crew”. If there’s no ticket acceptance in place what would people booked on those services be expected to do?

I have a ticket from Haymarket to Bolton for Thurs 9th Jan, as part of an itinerary selected for me on TrainSplit. Been getting worried about it anyway, and after today’s findings I have just paid for a new Avanti ticket for my through journey.

It’s too much of a gamble to rely on TPE nowadays.

The temporary timetable with the pre planned EC Edinburgh cancellations is supposed to end this weekend

I wonder what will happen next?

I took the 1205 Glasgow to Liverpool service to Penrith today . 3 car 185 . The 1108 Glasgow to Mancheste Airport was cancelled so our service took on passengers from that , they couldnt go on two Avanti services. I heard there wasnt a coach organised for them or it didnt materialise .

The 185 was full and standing , in fact every seat apart from the priority seats had a seat reservation label . I looked at many of the labels and they were Glasgow to Carlisle journeys and many through journeys to Liverpool , puzzled why so busy . Not sure if seat reservations were on this service for passengers from the 1108 . But some free seating should be provided.

Many people were told to get off at Carlisle for the Edinburgh to Manchester Airport TPE , though that wwas cancelled.
Id possibly risk going on a Avanti service with a TPE ticket.

TPE state "If your scheduled train should have arrived at the airport two hours before your flight is due to depart, but you were severely delayed by TransPennine Express, so missed the flight, then if the cause was within our control, we will assist in every possible way with your onward travel arrangements. If necessary, we will provide overnight accommodation to enable you to make an early start the following day."

I would how many people have needed to invoke this clause and what the outcomes have been.

It looks like we will have to wait until next year for the Edinburgh services:
https://www.tpexpress.co.uk/travel-updates/december-2019-timetable-changes

Not only did they can the 10:17 from Newcastle to Manchester Airport/ Liverpool (which I relied on to get to CLS on NUFC Saturday home 3pm kick offs) to accommodate the new timetable, I booked on their 08:10 service from Edinburgh to Newcastle for Saturday just gone.
National Rail Enquiries and the departure boards at Waverley said it was on time. 5 minutes before it was due to leave, the tannoy announced it was cancelled.
Further digging once I got to my parents revealed the return journey I was to make on Sunday was cancelled. The train I was doing Edinburgh to Newcastle today was cancelled and my return on Thursday is also cancelled.
I guess I'll have to wait to experience the new addition to the East Coast

What worried me was that if I risked the Avanti in the event of a cancellation, and they made me buy a new ticket on board, I would be £46.85 down, and that's if they allow railcard discount, while I would only be able to claim £11.55 back from TPE. Better to hedge my bets and buy an Advance Avanti now.

What a shambles. I am surprised it has been allowed to go on as long as this.

I don't see that services consistently showing "Cancelled" can come under the heading of "Planned disruption". They wouldn't be advertised in the first place if it's part of a longer term plan.
