Can anyone advise as to the salary for a Gwr carriage cleaner on permanent nights. Any shift allowance etc. Also how many people would work a night shift and how many trains would be expected to be cleaned. Exeter depot. Thanks.

While I am not applying for this role, I do find it slightly irksome that GWR don't put the salary on a lot of the job posts.

A lot of companies don’t advertise salaries. It’s frustrating. I would imagine it’s so that people don’t simply apply with the salary in mind. With jobs such as this though, salary could be a deciding factor for some. I understand to an extent with managerial positions.

I use to work for Northern Railway as a train presentation Operative(cleaner) permanent nights, they pay £19,795 but that does include the shift allowance. Its damn hard work and that type of job does tend to have a big turnover as alot of people find the work & permanent nights too hard.

I am currently in the NHS where every salary is in the public domain and on every job advert, a slightly different world (and easier when it comes to job hunting). I will eventually get a job in GWR and willing to accept a pay cut, but as you say it makes it harder to work out weather to go for it

To be fair, most frontline jobs with FirstGroup have advertised salaries, although sometimes you have to look quite closely to spot them. The internal vacancies are completely different and never have salaries advertised at GWR. Network Rail are good at advertising salaries too, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a job there without a salary listed. Glassdoor used to be a good place to find salaries for certain jobs, too.

GWR have several different pay scales, dependent on if it’s a GWR (ex FGW) depot, an ex Wessex depot or an old Thames depot. There were talks about getting them to all the same level. The old Wessex contracts are (we’re as my info is a bit out of date) based on the CAT system, whilst GWR depots that agreed to restructuring 20 or so years ago have FO grades (fleet operative). These range from FO1 to FO4, carriage cleaners would be FO1 (Maintenance Techs would be FO3) that would be circa £30K, the other depots would be similar! But maybe a different make u0 or overtime rates and T&C’s.

Northern are on roughly 19.5k with allowances, usually brought in from agency first to keep costs low. Then converted to a permanent contract.

Merseyrail were on 25kish basic with allowances. Though these were in house staff rather than agency. They had day staff on 21k. Mon-Fri only.

Arriva trains Wales have carriage cleaners on 30kish basic.

In fact, there was talk about it on here. That was 2016, they'll be on more now.

Northern have always paid the least in just about every job in comparison with other TOCs.

Apologies, just to add substance to my post, I'm not completely certain what GWR are on. They have different contracts afaik.
