Where? I haven’t seen them, even turned off. The only screen they have that I have seen is a Voyager style, basic dot matrix display at the ends of each carriage.

That's what I saw and the message displayed on those was nothing to do with the journey at all!

Does anyone else find that the Azuma internal carriage-end displays flicker irritatingly?

I've never seen the KeTech screens like those fitted to the Mk4s, and I guess the Azuma fleet has comparatively few exposed bulkheads for those anyway - even fewer once extra luggage storage is added.

Yes, all of the newer AT300 units suffer from that it seems (I'm assuming as they're all using the same displays, certainly the GWR ones do). Not fitting the colour displays when the legacy stock had them does seem a bit of a backward step.

Elderly neighbours made their very first trip on an Azuma in First Class on the northbound Chieftain on Friday. They travelled south on an old school LNER electric after a Scotrail connection.

Completely unprompted, I've never brought up the subject of the 'new trains' with them, they said:

- seats too small
- seats too hard
- too many seats crammed in
- tickets way more expensive than they were this time last year

Also unprompted by me, they said that they don't understand how this can be progress.

As a matter of fact, I don't agree that the First Class seats are too small, and I've got used to the firmness of them now. But old people don't like them. Oh well.

Again, the seat matter is subjective - my grandparents (both in their 70s, and extremely picky about seats) said that they preferred the Azuma over the IC125/IC225 on an Edinburgh - London journey recently!

I think some kind of dynamic mood lighting like you would get on an Airbus A220, A350 or the Boeing 787 could work really well on these units.

When is the lightning being changed or was that just a wind up? The lighting is still very intense, not what you want at 6 in the morning!

I don't think it is?

It's a shame for such a modern train with LED lights not to have mood-style lighting or at least the option to change brightness settings. Again all part of the passenger comfort and experience... Although i was told its to do with EU regulations...

I had a pleasent enough trip back to Wakefield on one the other day. There was a twenty minute delay at the Cross whilst the train had to be rebooted. The danger of running everything off a computer I suppose.

That's a daily occurrence on these and Class 331s. Even the doors lock out of use during these "resets" which I find disturbing when technically the trains haven't been set for departure and are still at the platforms.

Not what I was told in the tweet.

Also in a tweet reply to me David Horne says they have reduced the harshness of the lighting.

Pleased to see they’re listening.

I don't think the lighting is too bright the problem is just that it's too cold. Why on earth they couldn't have specified a warmer colour tone is beyond me.

I don't pass through Kings cross mainline often but I did a few days ago during the evening. The new concourse is beautifully lit in ambient colours in the evening, lighting doesn't particularly bother me but it must be annoying to then get on a very brightly lit train after waiting in a dimmed atmosphere.

I will say safety must play a big factor, especially for the more vulnerable. A nice bright interior will feel safer when it's late, saying that the older stock isn't particularly dim.

I doubt that the Dft has any control over operational decisions made by LNER or any other TOC.
In a similar vein they clearly have no control over Northern or TPE!
DfT have to approve any fleet changes on any franchise (excepting those devolved to Scottish and Welsh governments).

From the LNER website today:-
13:15 Leeds to London Kings Cross due 15:31
Further info:
10 car Azuma, the southbound unit is in reverse.
Formation is now as follows: South North

Are we supposed to understand this?

5 leeds & Lincoln services short formed today.
Appears to becoming the norm to use 5 coach units every day

Other than a handful of 800s for the Lincoln and odd off peak "branch line" service, the whole fleet needs to become 9 car standard. I've heard the arguments why not but the need for them far outweighs any benefit of the shorter units. Not to mention the reduced crewing costs and scheduling complexities, reservation changes and customer upset to name just a few. There's zero benefit on the ECML for splitting / doubling services and that's even been mentioned by David Horne

I don't think that is true as they could serve places in West Yorkshire with splits at Leeds and that must have been what was planned. I guess this is waiting for the building of platform 0.

That said, I have been on a few 5-car services between Kings Cross and Stevenage and the use of 5-cars on London to Harrogate services is close to being difficult on many services.

The problem at the moment seems to be the loss of 800109, non-arrival of 800101 and delays in further 801/2s entering service. There are certainly pairs of 801/1s running to Edinburgh which would appear to be covering 801/2s and this leaves Leeds at the bottom of the pile with 5-car services.

There are definitely regulations about minimum light levels on board of trains (see TSI-PRM) but none of these make it impossible to dynamically adjust the light to the outside conditions. The colour tone can be adapted as well.

Case in point: recent Dutch trains (refurbished VIRM, SNG) have sensors on board which dynamically adapt the strength of the interior lighting to the light level on board a vehicle. You can see this in action when the train goes through a tunnel: as the outside light level decreases, the interior lights shine brighter. And they go down again when the train emerges from the tunnel.

An example for dynamic colour tones can be found in the new Deutsche Bahn flagship, the ICE 4. In the morning the lighting has a more blueish tone, but during the evening this changes to a red hue.

The Class 800 and the ICE4 are contemporal designs: both were ordered at the beginning of the previous decade, and entered squadron service in 2017. Both trains will have had to comply to the same EU regulations throughout their design phase. What the lighting on the Class 800 family of trains looks like really is up to the customer.

The 12:03 from King's Cross was, according to the LNER booking system supposed to be an Azuma. Turned out to be a HST missing coaches A and G. Not a regular on the ECML but it's not good to hear that quite a few services are short formed.

None of the LNER HST sets have a coach A. (Their mkIV sets don't have an A or G.)

Well, unless you count the cycle storage bit of an HST which I believe may be referred to as 'coach A'.

LNER don’t have any HSTs.

1803 to Skipton tonight, no reservations due to a fault. No hot drinks service , the on board announcement said we were approaching Peterborough five minutes after leaving Kings Cross., then five minutes after actually leaving Peterborough. My first time on an Azuma and I thought it was a rough ride. Fortunately I can choose to travel to London via Lancaster as well as Skipton and will do in future.

Those issues are presumably related? If the TMS doesn't know where the train is, the reservation system won't be of any use.
