Closing Date: Wednesday 15 January 2020
Reference: 2019-363

Please note the minimum age requirement to apply for this role is 21. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds. Women and ethnic minority groups are currently under-represented within our Depot Driver population and are encouraged to apply as we value diversity and are committed to ensuring equality across our organisation.

We’re now recruiting for Trainee Service Drivers to join us in 2020 for our Neville Hill, Leeds depot! At East Midlands Railway, we are passionate about providing our people with the opportunity for continuing professional development. As part of this commitment we have played a leading role in the development of the new national Train Driver level 3 apprenticeship standard, which was published in June 2018 by Institute of Apprenticeships. Our Depot Train Driver programme has been designed to meet the requirements of the new level 3 standard and as a result you will be automatically enrolled on the apprenticeship when you join the Company.

As part of the Trainee Service Driver team you will be responsible for moving our trains around the Depot. You’ll be responsible for Depot driving, shunting, light maintenance and other tasks such as fault finding and reporting. Ensuring you keep people safe, you will be trained in and follow the rules and production requirements of East Midlands Railway. You will also be responsible for checking that the train environment is up to our market leading standards.

As a Trainee Service Driver you will be required to work 37 hours per week, this will be predominantly afternoons and night shifts across the 7 days of the week, with a minimum of 12 hours rest between shifts.

Natural progression in this role is to become the Mainline Drivers of the future. This is an exciting opportunity to begin a fulfilling career with East Midlands Railway.

Successful candidates will need to be responsible and committed to providing excellent service through efficiency, high standards and most of all, safety. Excellent communication skills are an essential attribute for Service Drivers to ensure you are able to work closely with the team around you. You do not require any previous train driving or railway qualifications or experience but candidates must hold a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths in order to achieve the apprenticeship qualification. We will support you in achieving a Level 2 qualification in ICT if you do not already possess this.

You will be expected to undergo 4 stages of assessment as part of the recruitment process, which include OPC national driver testing, as well as successful completion of a driver medical.

The first stage of assessments dates are:

• Stage 1 – Driver testing part 1: 12th - 14th February

• Stage 2 – Assessment Day: Wednesday 26th February

• Stage 3 – Competency based interview: 9th - 13th March

• Stage 4 – Driver testing part 2: WC 23rd March

Please note further testing will take place throughout 2020 in order to ensure all those successful at application stage are assessed. The dates provided above may also be subject to change.

Training courses will commence at a number of dates throughout 2020 and 2021. If successful you will be placed into a Talent Pool and be offered a role when opportunities become available. The apprenticeship scheme is a year long qualification and you will train alongside other successful applicants at our Training Academy based in Derby.

The successful candidates will enjoy an incredibly competitive salary, and fantastic benefits including a defined benefit salary pension scheme, free travel for you, your partner and children on the East Midlands Railway network, discounted travel with other train companies, cycle scheme and a wide range of other perks available through the employee benefits app.

To apply please complete the online application form and upload your CV. As we operate a blind screening process please remove ALL personal information including your name from your CV.

I live quite close to Neville hill depot so this job could be appealing, but if the natural progression is to become a mainline driver and you have to live 45 minutes to 1 hour away Surely me been in west yorkshire would fall outside those parameters?
Where do EMR base there train drivers?

Service Drivers are eligible to apply for internal only Trainee Mainline Driver vacancies, which generally appear for EMR’s Derby and Nottingham depots (The same vacancies which Derby and Nottingham based Depot Drivers apply for). These internal vacancies are exclusive to currently serving EMR Depot or Service Drivers.
If you fall outside the travelling distance requirements for those depots, you would likely need to relocate to accept mainline progression.

Possibly a silly question but what is the difference between a depot / service driver? Both seems to have same description

Up until recently, Service Drivers didn't receive full mainline rules training, whilst Depot Drivers did. However, with the new Train Driving Apprenticeship, I understand that new Service Drivers now receive the full rules package. I'm sure there's a Neville Hill Driver on here who might confirm or clarify that.

Service drivers shunt, depot drivers dont
Thanks for the info;)

What are the 4 stages of recruitment- Is this just the full Train Driver Assesment including MMI & DMI split into 4 days?.
Also is there still an enhanced pass rate needed for EMR or have they done away with that?

Stage One is comprised of the OPC Train Driver paper tests.
Stage Two is an EMR run assessment day normally composed of group exercises and speed interviews.
Stage Three is the Driver Manager Interview (DMI).
Stage Four is the second part of the OPC-run Train Driver assessments, consisting of computer exercises and the Multi-Modal Interview (MMI).

EMR often require an Enhanced pass for the Stage One assessments, although in their last Driver recruitment drive, they accepted the national standard.

Does anyone know if you have to live within a certain distance at the time of application? And then if not at time of application then how about during the training? I'm currently in the long process of moving back bear Leeds and therefore very curious to know. Thanks

Nearest EMR driver depots to Neville Hill are Derby,Nottingham or Lincoln, which are all over 70 miles from Leeds.

I wouldn’t expect to hear anything for at least two weeks. The application sifting process can take time.

I received an email this weekend informing me I have been shortlisted, and will be sent further details on the next selection process. This is for Leeds though, anyone else heard anything?

The next selection process (unless its recently changed) will be the video interview. After this and if successful it will be the Stage 1 psychometric testing - usually in Derby. Once you have completed this (EMT used the national standard in the last few years, assume EMR follow this now) then it's the group assessment day (mine last year was at Hilton in Leeds), where you have a number of group tasks. You then have speed interviews, prior to a full dinner been provided. Those who are then successful move through onto full multi-panel interviews. After this date, it's the Stage 2 psychometric testing and then you have your medical and are put into the talent pool.

Best of luck! :)

Bit of a drawn-out process, how do they expect people to get the time off?. Putting stage 2 psy at the end also seems illogical- passing all then potential failing at the last hurdle....

I also had an email from them on Saturday, saying I'd been shortlisted for the role, pretty happy to be moving forward with it. This will be my first application for a job in rail.

So, stage 1 assessment day tomorrow, what's everyone's thoughts on dress code? Are these events that require formal suits as you'd expect at any interview, or do people go more casually?

When I did my assessments last year for the Mainline I wore suit trousers and shoes with a shirt/jumper combo. Some people wore full suits, others trousers and shirt etc.

What ever you wear, be comfortable when sitting, you don't want any unnecessary distractions.

Best of luck!
