I will try to give a summary of what information that i have and can find.

Here is the current status of all of them:

• 141 001 (141 102) - Iran
• 141 002 (141 103) - Scrapped
• 141 003 (141 104) - Scrapped
• 141 004 (141 105) - Iran
• 141 005 (141 106) - Netherlands
• 141 006 (141 107) - Iran
• 141 007 (141 108) - Preserved (Colne Valley Railway)
• 141 008 (141 109) - Iran
• 141 009 (141 110) - Scrapped
• 141 010 (141 111) - Iran
• 141 011 (141 112) - Netherlands
• 141 012 (141 113) - Preserved (Midland Railway)
• 141 013 (141 114) - Iran
• 141 014 (141 115) - Iran
• 141 015 (141 116) - Iran
• 141 016 (141 117) - Iran
• 141 017 (141 118) - Iran
• 141 018 (141 119) - Iran
• 141 019 (141 120) - Iran
• 141 020 (141 101) - Scrapped

So that is:

12x Iran
4x Scrapped
2x Netherlands
2x Preserved

The ones in Iran are believed to still exist but are disused sitting in sidings rotting away. Although there is no more recent updates. So they could have been scrapped now.

The ones in the Netherlands have very little information available. I can't seem to find any updates about them at all. So they could have been scrapped now.

I hope that this helps. Hopefully someone else may have more information about the current status of the ones in Iran and Netherlands and if they still exist.

something to do with refurbishment/modification
Correct. From memory they didn’t have full autocoupler from build and needed jumpers to work in multiple. The refurbishment included giving then standard BSI couplers although not sure if they ever worked in multiple with other classes. The jumpers are covered with a square panel.

the refurbishment if I recall changed the transmission and engine.

if you look at the images on the wiki page have a look at the bottom image. The one in old WYPTE. You can see what I mean.

The Class 141s were renumbered into the 1411xx series when they were refurbished and fitted with BSI couplers by Hunslet Barclay around 1989. They received the WYPTE red and cream livery at the same time.

141104 was the one scrapped after colliding with a 156 at Huddersfied station in 1989.

The start of the winter timetable in September 1995 saw ten 141s go into storage, as there were surplus 142s and 144s available with the completion of the Airedale electrification scheme.
By April 1997 only 141113 and 141119 were left in traffic. 141119 was stood down in December 1997 with an engine defect, (it was the last Pacer in service with Leyland TL11 engines and SCG gearboxes). 141113 was withdrawn at the start of the summer timetable in 1998. It latterly often worked the Adwick shuttle.

With the exception of 141113, all retained Leyland TL11 engines and SCG gearboxes to the end.

The ones that went to Iran fell by the wayside around 2005 having been replaced by new DMUs.

Sorry, I meant why add 101, not add 100? 141001 -> 141101, 141020 -> 141120, etc. rather than 141001 -> 141102, 141020 -> 141101
It's usual (though not obligatory, of course) to keep the same end digits.

According to Wikipedia they took the chance to match the last digits of the vehicle and unit numbers, so 55502 and 55522 (originally 141001) became 141102 and so on, with 55521 and 55541 becoming 141101.

Makes a little sense when you think about it.

Absolutely the reason why as the class 140 took numbers 55500 & 55501 which meant the 141’s were misaligned when built.

141104 was scrapped at Neville Hill for definite. It was written off soon after refurb in 1999 when it collided with 156476 at Huddersfield (the 156 was transferred to Scotland when repaired). The 141 spent many years at NL as the depot Christmas tree before succumbed to the cutters torch on site.

These were superb units to work. Massive well laid out cab.

I travelled on them lots of times between Huddersfield and Leeds. I was disappointed when they were withdrawn as I wasn't expecting it. Was the accelerator and brake controls foot pedals like on a bus?

No they had normal hand controls although the desk panel was the dash straight out of the Leyland Titan and National bus plus the DSD was a bus brake pedal.

This might be the first recorded example of praise for the 141s from crew... not sure if you're being sarcastic!

Presumably the fact they had crew-only slam doors behind the cabs helped with the space situation. Passengers were (in theory) kept away from these areas by a metal pole which slotted into brackets welded to the bulkhead- no expense spared there!

They did have a very nice moquette pattern on the seats though, at least originally.

I didn't realise that any of these units were in preservation in the UK. Are the 2 listed as preserved above operational on their respective lines?

I’m somewhat intrigued too...
Let’s hope @Neptune comes back with a bit more info. ;)

We sent them pacers. If Mr Trump wants answers as to why Iran hates the west, he need only join our forums....
So that is:
12x Iran
4x Scrapped...

Speak to staff who worked them around Leeds, they say they were the worst they ever worked on. I recall a few mentioned there was some random metal bar they had to keep moving each time they accessed the cab.

Sadly the example at the Weardale Railway was scrapped out of pure greed despite offers from preservationists I understand, I won't be in any hurry to visit said railway.

I used to travel on them from HUD to LDS too and to a 8 year old at the time, they were wonderful. I preferred them to 142s and the boring 144s *yawn*. They were just like rail going buses to me and thats what they literally were.

Yeah, I never understood exactly why they were banished to the scrappies, especially 110. Was there anything especially wrong with it?

Nothing much, I believe it was a runner just a fault with the gearbox but that was all. From what I understand they got an offer for scrap and took the offer ignoring preservationists. Rather spiteful!

From what I recall when I was on the weardale 103 was scrapped to yield parts for 110 which was regularly used in traffic. To find out 110 has also been scrapped I find quite surprising, however bear in mind Its not so much a preserved railway but more an operational railway fixated on polar express and WW2 re-enactments and given the Darlington-Stanhope commercial services have never gotten off the ground maybe it was inevitable, if a shame

The cab layout was standard Leyland National and had more space than the later pacer classes. Yes the metal bar was a pain but no different to opening a door. Only 2 sets of door per side to rattle when the brakes wouldn’t release. 113 was of course the best unit due to the Cummins engine. Also ideal for lightly used off peak services. I always preferred working 141’s over other units. For all their faults they were a nice simple unit to work. The ride was about the same as the new CAF units too ;)

Yeah, 113 was a bit of a hot one, pace of a Leyland Lynx vs a National :D Heard of it once being on the Settle - Carlisle one getting over 90mph out of it, downhill of course, and with a rather alarming ride, this being in the days of jointed track! o_O

Never heard of a 141 making it over the S&C in service but there was the summer job booked for a 14x to strengthen the 156 on the morning northbound and teatime southbound so no reason why it couldn’t happen.

As new Class 142s, 143s and 144s had SCG gearboxes (except 142050) and were not very much different to the Class 141s. However, an epidemic of gearbox failures led to Voith gearboxes being fitted to all 142s 143s and 144s by late March 1991.

141108 is preserved at the Colne Valley Railway and is operational. https://preserved.railcar.co.uk/55508.html .
RB004 (the single car 141), is also operational at the Waverley Route Heritage Centre.

Any photos of 141104’s collision? Must have been bad to have been a write off?
