A bit harsh perhaps, but it certainly doesn't appear as though they are aware of the ability to dim the lighting somehow.
Should be in the training documentation - it is certainly in other Mark 3 training docs I've seen.

I seen a Aberdeen HST service at Edinburgh , it had seat reservation tickets . I thought seat reservations were abolished?
Was the coach full of litter as well? Probably two year old GWR ones and nobody's bothered to clear them out going by my experience of some of the sets.

The bit about GWR is a joke, but they have been putting some filthy stuff into service over the past year.

It was being looked at officially, but nothing further has been said on the subject in some time.
Part of me hopes this doesn't become a reality. Not because I think the current bike storage is sufficient (does anyone?) but not utilising ANY of the masses of space in the power cars seems mad. Why ScotRail don't even want to use it for end-to-end journeys is beyond me.

I don't think they ever will, so I think the best thing to hope for is TGS vehicles

This is quite few, as all 26 are supposed to be refurbished by June.
Well we all know from this topic that the rate of progress so far has been glacial and the number of sets refurbed well below the original plan. But the difference would appear to be that in recent weeks Scotrail are managing to put out into service more of the sets they have, (and maybe even keep them in service through the day), so in that sense there is some encouragement as to the reliability of the service offered.

I was disappointed in how close the seats are in the table bays. That combined with the harsh lighting and worst ever bike space makes this feel like a missed opportunity.

Noticed that. First day this year that both my trains were 170s. Also - they were both one of the unbranded ones that will be going off-lease in May.

was in the 3 pm from Glasgow to Inverness. Was 40 mins late into INVERNESS. Every station from Perth North one power car stalled when we stopped. To a few minutes to restart it.

Thought HST was ok on HML on one power car?

Yes, many pages back it was stated that a 2+4 on a single power car could hold linespeed up Slochd when a 170 couldn't even attain it.

Unless there was another issue as well?
One would imagine, performance would be on par with East Coast 2+9 HSTs that are fully functioning then? And even they have at times simply struggled on with 1 power car.
The issue is Scotrail are a bit concerned with running stock that is known to be unreliable with one failsafe gone, and no easy means of rescue if it does fail, and it would then block up a no-doubt single track section of the HML. It's unfortunate, but clearly rational to never start off with just 1 PC.

There used to be some restrictions on LNER (and predecessors') HSTs with single functioning power cars working over the HML, but I can't seem to find them.

I'm not sure if they are allowed to leave depot on one engine, one would assume not as that would negate any advatange of having two seperate motive power sources.

I think they were allowed up on one power car if they could be guaranteed a chain of greens all the way up the incline.

Maybe if one power car shuts down, the official procedure is that you must at least try to restart it before proceeding just on the other power car? (Even if this happens at every station?) Any comments from anyone with the knowledge?

See attached extract from the Scotland sectional appendix which details the restrictions.

I've just been on my first trip on a refurb, from Edinburgh to Perth. I travelled in first class, which is very nice, but I had a good nose around in standard before we set off.

Honest opinion? Decidedly underwhelming. For all the hassle and inconvenience, the improvement over previous stock really isn't that great. Fine, there's more seats, but this is still an old train, and as soon as it starts moving, you notice.

Jerky acceleration, and that horrible squeaking and clattering from the bogies and gangways, is still a problem. I also find the suspension on HSTs far too soft compared to modern stock, and it results in a constant slight bounciness I really don't like.

Only a marginal improvement over the 170s, I reckon, unless you're in first. Really not buying into all the hype right now.
