When travelling between Edinburgh and Glasgow, the only reruns offered are day returns (£13.60 off peak / £26.20 peak). If returning on a different day, you have to buy two singles (£13.40 off peak / £15.30 peak).

However, booking a journey to another station a bit further will give the option of a period return (eg Paisley Gilmore St to Edinburgh or Eskbank to Glasgow), for a cheaper price than two singles.

My question is, which station just outside Glasgow or Edinburgh is the best one to book from/to to get the cheapest period return between the two cities? I usually use Eskbank, but heard a guard selling someone a ticket to another station (didn’t catch the name, but wasn’t Eskbank) for the same trick.

Also, what is the logic behind National Rail / ScotRail (?) not offering period returns between the two cities?

Eskbank-Glasgow was the best I could find for this when I looked last autumn. As far as I know that hasn't changed.

That's fairly common over short distances - and, looking at the fares, I assume that an Anytime return would be almost or exactly twice the single anyway.
It's the lack of an Offpeak return (or the existence of one from Eskbank!) that makes it worth using the alternative.

I don't think Eskbank-Glasgow has the cheapest period tickets with validity between Edinburgh and Glasgow. While there are cheaper alternatives, this forum may not be the best place to suggest them. Not everyone is glad when passengers save money.

Edinburgh-Glasgow is 47.25 miles via Falkirk. Journeys such as Cardiff-Swansea and Leeds-Manchester cover a similar distance, but there are period return tickets available for them.

What I think isn't common is that they sell through tickets to Edinburgh Airport, but don't sell period returns between there and Glasgow. For most major airports, you can buy period returns to them if you're travelling from more than a few miles away.

The coach between Edinburgh /Edinburgh Airport and Glasgow offer period returns.

Why wouldn't it be good to share the station that is cheaper?

They could do that. They could change the route validity of the fare (either by putting something on the ticket or by changing the routeing guide). They could even delete the period returns for a route.

I don't know how easy it would be for Scotrail to do any of this, so I'm just being cautious.

Sheffield - Manchester is ~43 miles. TPE removed Day Returns on that flow. Period returns are now the only inter-available tickets on offer.
