I’m planning a trip from Todmorden to Scotland, and the itinerary I’ve got involves changes at Burnley or Blackburn and then Preston, with a 15 minute connection onto the train to Glasgow.

Given how poor Northern’s service has been, it’s quite possible one of their services will be cancelled or delayed.

If I can see that’s happening, and I’m travelling on an advance ticket, can I legitimately leave earlier and get different trains without fear of penalty for not being on the specific train my ticket is for, in order to end up on the same Avanti train (and therefore avoid delay repay) or do I have to let myself get delayed?

Hope that makes sense

If your ticket only has a reservation for the Avanti train, which I believe is generally the case, then there would be no problem taking an earlier Northern service.

The TOD to BBN service is non reservable, so absolutely no problem with using an earlier train on that bit.
IF you have been given a reservation from BBN to PRE (on the York-Blackpool service) technically you should use it, but I would simply ask the train conductor before boarding. They could technically refuse, in which case you will have to enjoy the delights of Blackburn's Cathedral Quarter for an hour - and if you miss the connection at Preston, that's Avanti's problem AND you can claim Delay Repay from Northern :)
