Yesterday, arriving into Piccadilly I noticed an 11 coach Pendolino on an adjacent platform with a full pantograph on coach U. Is this unusual or have I just been blind for the last number of years?

Did it definitely have a pantograph? The 3rd pan well on the 11 coach sets doesn't have a pantograph fitted although there are some other bits of equipment.

I might have been mistaken but it actually looked leke a pan to me. I saw one later in the day with equipment but no pan.

Location
Somewhere, not in London
Coach "U" only has a VCB, and some other roof mounted equipment for the below solebar transformer, there is no and is no facility to fit a Pantograph to this car, nor any control wiring to support it.

Out of the two extra vehicles to make up an 11-car set, one is fitted with a transformer (as already mentioned) and takes it's 25kV supply from the busline. The other vehicle is fitted with traction and auxiliary equipment, powered by the former vehicle. So in terms of power distribution these two vehicles are independent from the two outer halves of the train.

On a 9-car set, the 688 vehicle (trailer) is in the middle of these two halves.

VCB & earthing switch, surge arrester, voltage and current transformers have to go somewhere!
