I hear that EMR are leaving Neville Hill depot next year; any ideas who could be taking over from EMR there?

It is only the EMR full length HSTs which are maintained at Neville Hill, as the number of full length HSTs reduced over the years so have EMR’s presence there. It is logical with the 360s being maintained at Beford Caldwell that there will be enough space at Etches Park to maintain the entire Hitachi Fleet there.

Northern are crying out for space at Neville Hill so will simply expand their current operations there.

I reckon Northern and LNER will want to use the space.

Cross country use Crofton for the Class 220/221s, but could move the HSTs back up from Laria.

TPE could use it if York is tight to berth class 185s

Trouble with Neville hill apart from its very old is it's wrong side of Leeds Station with only 2 tracks the station.
What Northern need is a brand new state of the art depot somewhere to the west side.
Northern seem to be reducing the allocations after the demise if non PRM units leaving only 155s 158s 170s, 333s, 321/2 and possibly some 150s. All the new seems to be allocated to the west side although not sure about the 6 331s.
Also the 16 333s are maintained by Siemens at a separated part or Neville hill but the seems to be some doubt about there future so this may change.

The Class 804s will be based at Etches Park won't they? Kind of a given that EMR will be leaving Neville Hill sooner or later.

Leaving next year would be sooner than I expected, though. Unless they have a deal to maintain the ex-LNER HSTs elsewhere.

The ex LNER HSTs are only for this year, with the Corby’s going electric in December that’s enough 222s released to see off the full length HSTs.

Good point, plus the HT 180s to replace the ex-GC HSTs.

Out of interest, how many Class 222s will be released from Corby duties by the Class 360s (assuming they arrive on time)?

Enough to replace the HSTs - It’s a full timetable recast as the 6th LDHS path on the Midland allows the existing Nottingham slow to be sped up so there’s not a like for like replacement.

I think the short HSTs are already based at Etches Park.

York station would likely be used. They currently stable over night there.

XC have signed a long term agreement with GWR for GWR to do the maintenance on the XC HSTs at Laira - they won’t be walking away from that so soon after signing it.

...and for fairly obvious reasons I suggest they’d want a depot at one end of their network, not in the middle.

I would suggest that Neville Hill is better positioned than Laira as diagrams start/end at NL, which they don’t at Laira.

A depot that has other HST sets to maintain also has its advantages with spares supplies and staff familiarity. Once you have a fleet as small as XC has there us not much day to day work for them, but add in the GW sets, gives Laira a distinct advantage over Neville Hill post EMR.

I guess that'll be the end of the EMR Leeds trains then.
I believe this would be true, as the trains from St Pancras to Leeds are slower than the King's Cross ones, and also it was to enable HSTs to return there to receive maintenance.

Will all the maintenance for the Class 804s be done at Etches Park? Very surprised given Doncaster isn't that far away from Sheffield.

Surely Doncaster Carr is busy enough with LNER and TPE. Etches Park would become rather idle without the Class 804 allocation.

EMR service LNER sets (and their own) at Neville Hill on one side of the depot and Northern the other side. There is a separate 4-road servicing shed near the railway with one side Northern the other EMR. LNER 800/1 Leeds sets will still need to serviced here (With main servicing at Doncaster). If this spare capacity it would be logical for Cross Country and Grand Central to move in. TPE could also make use for light servicing.

Doncaster is full. Its the reason that HTs 802s are being maintained at Bounds Green long term.

Must admit when I go past the remains of Healy Mills Yard near Wakefield I do find myself thinking along the lines of there being a huge plot of railway owned land, which is well connected and not very far from Leeds. Could be the perfect place for a large new depot...

I reckon Northern and LNER will want to use the space.

I'm not sure LNER will. They've got a shiny new depot at Doncaster Carr to look after their trains. Now Northern on the other hand are desperate for space at Neville Hill (it's why 144s are now being looked after up at Heaton).

Indeed I've never quite understood why the depot ever went to EMRs predecessor at privitisation really as the local franchise has always used it more than EMR, EMT or MML!

Agree about Northern. Similarly there should have been a new depot in the Sheffield area. It is not just about the main depots but what satellite facilities can offer - fuel, wash, CET, repair, A Exam, heavy cleans, gear box and engine changes mean units don't have to visit home depot so often and provide greater train resilience. Hull BG offer all this but could do so much more. Sheffield which has more Northern units can only offer some of this.

Do Bounds Green and Etches Park have the facilities to do everything though or will certain (occasional maybe) tasks have to returned to Doncaster Carr?

As an example Chiltern (did?) have to visit Willesden for some tasks that said franchise couldn't do itself.

I think not as elsewhere on the forums they were mentioned in discussion about EMRs future timetable consultation which showed them as still in, IIRC, as DfT had included them in the spec. Have a look for that thread for more chat about that.

I take it if EMR leave Neville Hill they will also stop St Pancras to Leeds through service given these trains are effectively a positioning move?

Any suggestions for a suitably sized plot of railway land along the Sheaf valley?
