I've got an advance ticket Crewe to Manchester and just assumed I would have to go to Piccadilly, but what does the wording "Manchester Stations" mean?

Does it give further options?

I want to get to Victoria and thought I would need to catch a tram, but the wording implies not.

What's the route on the ticket? At a guess, AP Northern Only?

This means you may use a connecting service but in compliance with the route on the ticket. It's very unlikely that you'll find a Northern service from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Victoria currently I'm afraid.

Unfortunately, tickets to Manchester Stations aren't usually valid on Metrolink services.

Manchester stations traditionally meant Piccadilly, Oxford Rd and Deansgate, this was before it was possible to reach Victoria by the Ordsall chord. Suppose the only solution is to ask or try it and find out.

Well, no. Manchester Victoria is certainly included in the group 'Manchester Stations'.

The relevant questions are whether it can be reached using a permitted route (yes it can) and whether the route printed on the ticket permits the use of the trains that go that way (generally not).

Presumably the ticket is also "Booked Train Only" so you have to go on that specific train. Journey time to Piccadilly on a direct train would be 55 minutes. It is possible to get to Manchester Victoria on Northern by changing at Alderley Edge and Salford Central, but take you a long time.

Thanks everybody. You're right it is a Northern Advance Booked Train Only.

However, the main aim of getting to Victoria was to visit the Football Museum. I'm also attracted to the People's History Museum.

It seems for £2 (Railcard Discount) I can travel from Piccadilly to Victoria via Salford Crescent, and breaking my journey visit both museums! That sounds great.

I won't get to sample the famous Ordsall Chord, but you can't have everything.

It’s a very simple walk to the Football Museum - I’d suggest going by foot as it doesn’t take that long.

There is always the free bus service from Piccadilly which will take you to Victoria and also down to Deansgate. The walk from Deansgate is pretty much the same as the walk up from Salford Central (not Crescent as the OP mentioned earlier).

Another thumbs up for the People’s History Museum from me as well. One of the lesser known places to visit in Manchester, but well worth a visit.

It would still be be permitted to use a connecting Northern service from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Oxford Road or Deansgate without having to buy an additional ticket.

As others have noted, the walk isn't too far and the network of free bus services might be helpful to you.
