I’m new to the forum, I thought I would join as I’m becoming increasingly more interested in a career as a train driver.

Could someone advise me of any train depots that around the Wakefield / Leeds areas and what companies they are so I can look into their possible vacancies in further detail.

I think I have located Northerns depot at Neville Hill in Leeds and also Grand Centrals depot near to Carlton, Wakefield. Is this correct and is there anymore?

Thanks I’m advance

Train crew depots and rolling stock depots are normally two separate entities. There is a train crew depot thread at the top of the careers section of the forum.

Leeds station has a large Train crew depot for Northern and there is a LNER depot there too. Grand Central have a depot in Bradford.

I am completely new to all of this. I’m currently a serving Police Office and I’ve spoken to a lot of people who mention train driver roles as being a good safe industry to be in with a lot of cross over skills.

Could you explain to me the difference between crew and rolling stock? Sorry if that’s a silly question but I’m a complete novice and trying to learn about the career before applying for something I know nothing about.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Rolling stock are the trains that you drive, crew are the people who work on them so drivers, train managers, customer hosts etc.

Northern have depots for crews at Leeds and Sheffield. However, they maintain some of their trains at Neville Hill so there might be shunter jobs there.

That’s great thank you very much everyone.

Everyone seems really helpful.

I should imagine each company is different but what’s the common theme in terms of recruitment process etc? I’ve seen a lot of abbreviations and I don’t have a clue what they mean.

Quoted from another thread:

The route to mainline driving is the same for everyone.

Thank you. I will look on their website to see if they are recruiting or maybe contact their HR department to learn more.

Of which you can remove LNER (Usually) and XC out if looking for trainee driver roles.
