Going on holiday next month with a few friends.

One of my friends passports expires in a few months. As of 31st January, you now need 6 months on your passport to travel to EU countries (except Ireland). So, my friend only has a few weeks to get a new passport.

Brexit. The gift that keeps on giving. No doubt this passport issue is someone else's fault though.

I've just renewed my passport, it took only about 10 days after applying online (although the Passport Office won't start until the old passport has been received).

But, at least we'll have blue passports (printed in Poland by a French company)...

My new one is burgundy... :D

But the words European Union have been removed from the front cover.
Not if you have a pen....
To be honest I'm not sure if it's an offence to deface the front cover; however there are passport covers out there...which are burgundy....and have European Union written on them...and are fully legal to cover any passport!!
Anyway, hope you all love your polish/french passport!

Still less than 50%, and falling, which by any definition is a minority.

Now, what did the IMF say about UK prospects yesterday, and how many EU finance companies have applied for UK registration post Brexit?
The Tories only got 43.6% of the vote in the last general election. I guess, as you say about our trade with the EU, only a minority in the UK want a Tory government and yet hear we are. The EU makes a massive chunk of our trade and you are writing it of as a minority? Compared to where?

Someone will know more about this than me, but I believe a BXP MEP has tweeted that we now wont be on the EU fisheries commission so we won't have a say.
Now, er, let me take a breath there....

Came across that myself. June Mummery, MEP for just another few days. Should be nominated for the Darwin Prize.
Problem is, she's not really at risk. Most high-profile proponents of Brexit have already shielded themselves from it. I'll bet £1 she has too.

This is despite the fact that "there are no downsides, only upsides".

We will not participate on any EU bodies during the 11 month transition/negotiation period, but the EU has pledged the status quo will apply.

I have never understood why our tiny fishing industry gets so many people so animated.
It's not massive, by any stretch of the imagination, but UK fisheries landed about a billion pounds worth of fish in 2018. But it's more an emotional thing than a rational one - people in fishing ports remember when the industry employed tens or hundreds of thousands of people and compare it to the 15,000 or so people currently directly employed in the sector.

What they don't take into account is that most of the jobs have been lost to automation (e.g. one large trawler can catch as much as twenty old-style ones but doesn't need 20 times the crew), rather than being lost because of the EU.

If it is not such a big deal, why is the EU making it one?

To understand that you need to go to France, Spain and Portugal to see how much fresh fish is available in shops and restaurants. Here we get blocks of non-specific "fish" covered in batter or breadcrumbs.

Because UK territorial waters make up a not-insignificant proportion of EU waters. A lot of fish from UK waters is landed in and sold in EU ports. And vice versa.
Didn't we sell off a lot of our fishing rights?

I think you are going to the wrong places to eat fish.

Indeed. Apart from being a legal requirement to describe accurately what fish you are frying, it's also good practice. I should know, I run a chippy and I certainly don't fry "blocks of non-specific "fish" covered in batter".

Its not often I share anything from the Brexiteers these days, but this one went straight on my social media feeds....

"We out, but we still want a say...."

This should be engraved onto some future monument to Brexit....

I think its fair to say that most other European countries with large amounts of coastline eat far more fresh fish, and indeed a much higher variety of fish dishes than we Brits do.

I think that is probably true, though the "nonspecific blocks" of stuff (not just fish) come from supermarkets, not the likes of chippies. OK, people do just ask for "fish" and chips, but it's well known that that is normally cod (and you'll be told that if you ask), and it's not a "nonspecific block" apart from having the bones, head and tail removed, it's decidedly fish shaped.

To be honest I wasn't really referring to the "nonspecific blocks" comment earlier, many fish & chip shops & restaurants clearly indicate which type of fish they have on offer. I'm talking more about the variety fish & dishes consumed here. Fish dishes away from the traditional battered type (and perhaps one or two others) are far more commonly part of restaurant's menus in other European countries than they are here.

Other governments specifically banned their own fishers from doing so.

Ahh, the UK, for sale to the lowest bidder, as long as it makes a profit.
Then people wonder why our money goes to the USA, Germany and China for water
Germany and Holland for railways
France and Germany for electric and gas
etc
etc
etc
