Can anyone please give me a rough idea on when the 143s with GWR are expected to be withdrawn? I know they’ve been given a derogation until December 31st this year. I’m trying to make the most of them while I can. I also know this is dependent on the 769s finally entering service.

Anyway, I'll do a deal with you. Tell me when thee GWR 769s will be available and I'll try and answer your question.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the first deliveries end up not happening in May, I mean look at Northern as well because they’re still waiting for theirs along with TfW. On the other hand, the 143s now have to be attached to a 150 or 158 to comply with the rule of the train having disabled facilities.

That is not true. One of Northern's 769s is accepted for traffic and it was suggested in the most recent edition of Modern Railways that it would be in service in March.

Well that’s interesting since none of them have actually done any testing... I realise my post was wrong as they have 2 delivered

TfW can run pacers alone they had a different dispensation so TfW can run pacers alone

You said something about TfW tho but it yeah GWR run lots of 150s with pacers. 143603 isn't looking good
Admittedly it’s not looking good at all after it got hit by those waves. It’s the one destined to be preserved at Swindon as well so it wouldn’t at all surprise me if they decide to scrap it then decide on another 143 to replace it.

The 143s have to be returned back to porterbrook in the condition they first leased them in (unless under special conditions like when 142005 was used for spare parts) so they will have to fix the windows

Either way it will probably be off for a while anyway.

I will stick my neck out and say 603 will be restored to working order, but may not be seen in service again with GWR. Of course that depends on the 769s, which I think could be December time before they come into full service, kick off the cascade so that 143s can go off lease before the end of 2020. Obiously the circus upstairs at GWR are hoping the 769s come into service sooner than that.

Not quite strictly true, the leasing company is entitled to have the rolling stock returned in a decent serviceable condition however it may depending on circumstance mutually accept a monetary exchange instead if it suits both parties.

Indeed, as we have also seen with 43195, and likely to be for 43300 & 313.

The first 769s are supposed to be delivered to GWR in May plus as you say it will be a gradual process getting them into service but Clarence Yard once said that it would be likely that some if not all the 143s will have to remain in traffic until the 769s finally start appearing in numbers. Either way, it wouldn’t surprise me if the 143s do end up sticking around until December.

I suspect that's not quite the same - they are likely to be insurance write offs and so the leasing company might receive a payout in lieu of the asset that's been written off.

TOCs and leasing companies can agree any terms they like in terms of handing rolling stock back, although often those terms state the stock should be handed back in a 're-leasable' condition.

There was recent comment on here about FGW not removing the 'Flying F' from the seats of Scotrail-bound HST stock and how they would be in breach of agreement. The truth is that the leasing company can choose to waive aspects such as this if it so chose - especially if it means the speedy re-lease of rolling stock that would otherwise be sitting around not earning.

Following the same vane we never know the 143 could be an insurance write off! I suspect we will never find out the details and it will either return to traffic or quietly disappear off for recycling.

Indeed, the Rosco's will have included contract terms that will stipulate the condition on return in order to protect themselves, but that doesn't preclude a pragmatic discussion or negotation if both parties think it makes sense. And in particular stock that is bound for the scrapyard will probably be accepted in just about any condition so long as it runs.

I seem to remember GWR originally saying they were planning to withdraw their Pacers in 2017. They’re still here in 2020! Not that I’m complaining, GWR 143s are the best of the 14x bunch IMO and some have been refreshed in the last few years.

Nor am I to be fair! I’ve really grown to be fond of them the past 2 years.
