Shows how much things have changed then!

Agreed again with yorkie, 180s are boring. Except I would add they're just rubbish in general, no matter what GC do with them. As the saying goes, you can't polish a turd!

From a passenger point of view, the 180s are decent units in my view. Walk in and it looks like a real carriage, not the crammed in passenger area of an aircraft. Reasonable view from most of the seats too. Just a shame there reliability hasn't been too good since they were built, but you could say exactly the same of Grand Central's HSTs.

Cart is 180101, reported on GC Rail Gen. Sets swapped at Sunderland. Reason unknown.

43067 and 43084 on lodge tonight for 1N25 tomorrow...

Reason faulty aircon on some of the coaches supposed (our coach was fine). However the 180 had 2 engines out, no air-con in FC and on its return working was over an hour late!! good move eh.

Just a quick question, does anyone know if HSTs are booked to operate the 10:46 YRK -> SUN or the 12:30 SUN -> YRK next week on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm planning on finally getting out on GC and seeing as I can do any of those days, I thought I might as well see if I can get a HST.

Cheers.

The best place for HST gen is http://hstgen.co.uk/
The gen changes daily. That is the best place for gen (and I would encourage Wensley and GNERman to contribute to that as well as their own group :))

You can find out what is working the 1046 YRK - SUN & 1230 return by looking at what is on the 1730 SUN-KGX the previous day.

The 1046 can be in York for around 25 mins! Either that or it waits outside the station...

Its so good to see a London train in Bradford, When you take last year Bradford only had one direct service, and now 4 Now each way (Including 3 Grand Central Services To/From Bradford Interchange and East Coast Service To From/To Bradford Forster Square).

Couldnt Believe Grand Central Service Calls at Wakefield Kirkgate and Pontefract Monkhill. some of smallest and worst in my opinion stations ever. Do You Think People Will Use it at those stations?

Also at Bradford Interchange doesn't it make Northern Rail Rolling Stock look Rubbish when you have a Grand Central Class 180 next to it

I was more implying that any Northern stock that shows up at Kirkgate looks a bit grubby.

Maybe if they were washed more frequently, they may look better

I've always found that Northern stock is quite clean on the outside, especially on the Aire Valley as there are cariage washers at Leeds and Skipton.

The whole thing about Northern's stock loking rubbish is wrong. Northern had to create a livery to go on all stock and over 10 classes of rolling stock and this has been acheived well.

It certainly looks a bit less "tacky" than ATN and FNW did...

Agreed there

I think it is more when you see a unit that hasn't been washed for a while, at Wakefield Kirkgate it doesn't help their image compared to a shiney black GC 180 who have enough stock that they can get them washed.

Unfortunately, Northern don't seem to have that luxury

shiny cos theyve just been repainted...

Northern do pretty well with what they have got, it is easier with a smaller fleet but they have transformed the franchise, the only thing they lack is new stock.

In the short term though there isnt much for them to do, one thing I can possibly think of is when a couple of 314/318's come off lease they may take a few to replace Pacers working Newcastle-Alnmouth, which is completely electrified.

Lets hope though that if Northern and TPE are merged that the new owner orders some more 185's to supplement the current fleet and be placed on current 158 duties (York-Blackpool springs to mind...)

Not sure what Pacers you are talking about here, since there are only two Northern workings to Chathill each day in both directions and they are nearly always 156s. So you'd have those couple of 314/318s sitting around all day at Heaton since all of the other routes around Newcastle aren't electrified.

I think (some of) those run to the Metro Centre, which is unwired, so you'd need to decide whether it'd be better to run a longer EMU (with better braking etc) or a direct train to the shops.

I've suggested it before, but there are obvious disadvantages.

Wonder if he is getting confused with the Newcastle - Morpeth trains? They certainly are under wires all the way, but as tbtc says most of them carry on either to the Metrocentre or occasionally Hexham. Also, I know some of the sidings at Morpeth where the train runs to ECS are electrified but I'm not sure if the ones the 142s use are.

I met 2 people yesterday on GC and directed them here, so if you're reading this, hi! :)

One of them has requested gen on the 1820 from KGX. Ironically I may be on the 1842 from Sunderland! So if anyone can post any gen today (Sunday) that would be much appreciated.

On Thursday I had what I am counting on being my last ever Valenta trip, on the 16:50 from the Cross as far as York. Absolutely hellfire it was, and as I was approaching it in the frame of mind that it would be the last time ever, I went away very content. Thanks to GC for keeping these great trains going as long as they did :)

Think there's a lot of us now counting our next Valenta trip as our last! I'm still determined to get one in myself, but if not my last one is counted as 43065+43123 on 30th January 2010.

Ironically, I'm listening to This Is The Last Time by Keane at the moment!

Glad to hear you enjoyed it though :D
