I think the main thrust of the work at Twyford is actually correcting a long standing gauging issue with the 16x fleet, which has become more problematic now a number of them are “Ride Height Modified”.
It was definitely explained that way by Clarence Yard in posts 83 & 86 early last month.

The problem was actually reduced by RHM but NR refused to use comparative data at this location.

The issue was that the step board actually overrode the platform coper by quite a margin. Doing the RHM actually reduced the risk of a hit (because you effectively jack the vertical overlap by 25mm) but it still showed a hefty foul on the clearance model so NR wouldn’t allow a RHM 165, despite it being safer than an original 165! An original 165 is cleared in the SA so NR said they could still run. Yes, you have to, at times, completely suspend all logic when it comes to dealing with NR and route clearance.

So the track had to be sorted, which is probably the best long term course of action anyway.

It still has to go to Loughborough. Wolverton are only doing new work “above the solebar”.

I actually saw one on test today between Reading depot and Didcot - when exactly is it proposed that these enter service?

If it was in plain white livery, that was one of the unconverted Class 319s that are currently at Reading depot for staff familiarisation and crew training.

Who knows when they are eventually going to come. If you ask me, this whole 769 project has just been a disaster.

The platform extensions at Sandhurst, that they having been constructing since November, to accommodate 4-coach 769s, are almost complete.

Couldn't agree more! The first Class 769s were meant to start running in service in spring 2019. Now nearly a year later not even 1 fully completed unit has been delivered...similar story for Northern first ones meant to enter service MAY 2018. Still not entered service for Northern....

Looks like May now for the first delivery to GWR.

Just in time for for GWR/DfT's punt on implementing 3tph on the North Downs Line to actually happen, if Realtimetrains is to be believed.

The inner realist in me says I will be amazed if 3tph happens before May 2021 or, at the present rate of progress, May 2022.

The North Downs workings in RTT only require 10 units and one of those appears to work on a different route in the morning peak while another appears to sit in platform 5 at Reading for most of the day. I would imagine the proposed timetable can be resourced with the existing Turbo fleet.

To run the 3tph you need 10 units and you can't do all of it with the existing resource base - I have the diagrams.

Even if the first 769 arrives in May, they won't start passenger service until the Autumn, at the earliest. The initial deliveries are currently programmed to be strung out over quite a few months.

How many 769s would it take to make a mix viable (like the 710/378 mix when GOBLIN deliveries were late)?

I hope that translates to the existing 2tph service remaining in place as it is until resources permit rather than some awkward hotchpotch of the 3tph timetable running with services chopped out.

Mind you, back in March, you suggested that there would be enough Turbos for it but I guess they have found alternative uses https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/3tph-on-north-downs-line.140595/page-18#post-3920506

It could always see a hotpotch set up like we have on the Basing Branch with our oddball 3tph, with 2 of the peak services also acting as through trains (one in the morning works an Oxford to Basingstoke, 1 in the evening works the opposite).

Units have been delivered to Northern. From the Northern 769 thread crew training is starting and testing on the Southport Line is beginning soon.

Just a gentle reminder this is to discuss GWR Class 319 / 769 information & discussion, not for Northern units, or for speculative ideas either.

The forum has plenty of capacity for new threads (even at peak times!), so no need to cram lots of topics into the wrong thread please ;)

Just seen that some Class 769s are to be used on services out of Liverpool Street, is there any truth in this?

No, there are currently no class 769’s in service, however Northern operate a few class 319’s out of Liverpool Lime Street.

I didn't ask if they were in service as I know that they're not. I read something stating they will start on services out of Liv St from late summer.
