Good evening all

I've been in contact with Transdev in York but unfortunately I've had no response. I've got nowhere using their website for the Coastliner.

Is anyone able to advise please with regards to single prices on route 840 from York Rail Station to Whitby? If there is a group discount would also be very helpful.

Many thanks!

Down on Marshlink all our halts have a range of through tickets to this bus with a choice or Pickering or Whitby including advances.
Less important villages like Manchester obviously not worth their bother :)

The OP asked about group discounts - as well as single and return fares, Coastliner also offer a “Daytripper Group Plus” ticket at £30, valid for up to five adults (or adults and children) travelling together for a day’s unlimited travel on any Transdev bus (including all of Coastliner) in Yorkshire and Lancashire. The ticket is available from the bus driver or via the Transdev Go mobile app.

Why haven’t you considered going by train, just out of interest?

They didn't say they hadn't considered it.

However, there are 5 non-direct rail options a day and 4 direct buses which are faster. For a Day Return (or for 4 people together) the buses are also cheaper.

I'm looking to use the 1223 840 service from York Station, so if one were to get there by train in time one would need to leave York at 0839 and change at Middlesbrough.

So it really is saving so much time rather than comfortably travelling by rail, and I suppose, the bus service is more reliable?

The rail service takes longer, costs more, and involves going north to come back south, so I think it's unlikely most people would opt for rail rather than bus.

The bus goes direct via Malton and Pickering and takes about two hours.

The train involves a trip north to Middlesbrough and then on to Whitby, and takes over three hours.

Ironically tomorrow it's a RRB from Boro to Whitby and that knocks an hour off the journey!

So far as reliability missing your connection at york is a real bonus. LNER's customer charter says that if you miss a connection and would be delayed by over an hour that you will be offered alternative travel if practical, it happened to me and I had a taxi ride to Whitby from york, arriving virtually 2 hours early into Whitby. Cost me my delay repay :(

Not to mention a nice trip along the Esk valley !

I can confirm that the Coastliner bus was significantly more comfortable than the TPE cl 802, the decrepit and smelly ex-ScotRail 156 or the Northern Chapman seated 156.

It would be difficult to argue against the bus for this journey to be honest.

It cost us £7.50 each, it's faster and arguably more comfortable than the train

The cost of a York to Whitby train ticket has probably doubled in only about a decade, at a much faster rate than inflation (edit: in 2007 it was only £9.50; it's now £19 and is therefore no longer competitive with the bus)

It's funny though, I still love the train journey !

I can say I prefer it as well, because I have caught the bus via Scarborough before (although that was a good and useful bus link).

True, but the 840 over the moors from Pickering is a grand old ride, and the descent down into Goathland is a bit of a hair raiser!

Some amazing scenery on that route (i've done it as a car passenger).

That's the thing about Yorkshire. It's hard to walk five yards without being confronted with beauty !
