Just a quickie (and there's probably a thread already but I can't find one) with Bury dropping out of the league, it raises the argument of the largest town/city (population) without a 1 - 4th tier side. Unfortunately Bury can't win that one either, locally Warrington does by a few thousand, and York also, and of course Salford is now well and truly a League side so they don't count!

Wakefield City Council includes not just the "city" (it's a market town with a big church ) of Wakefield but also the towns of Ossett, Castleford, Pontefract, Knottingley, Featherstone and Normanton. Not a single Football League club has ever existed within that area, and the highest up the pyramid any team from there has been is the Northern Premier... and even that team was "stolen" from Emley! The highest-ranked team now is Ossett United, of the Northern League division One (West).

The district does quite well for Rugby League though, with two teams in Super League (Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Castleford Tigers) and one in the Championship (Featherstone Rovers).

In last nights episode of Endeavour, set in Oxford in early 1970, the murderer was heard listening to the football results on the wireless. In division one were inter alia Cambridge, Oxford, Lincoln and one of the Manchester sides.

Now mentioning Cambridge United in 1970 is a like waving a red rag to a bull to Bradford (Park Avenue) fans. They didn't take our place in the Football League till late May of that year and the season didn't start until August. And Cambridge United certainly didn't start in division one. Its hard to believe that the Daily Mail reviewer gave such an inaccurate programme five stars.

Manchester City have been banned from European club competition for the next two seasons after being found to have committed "serious breaches" of Uefa's club licensing and financial fair play regulations.

The reigning Premier League champions have also been fined 30m euros (£25m).

The independent Adjudicatory Chamber of the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) said City had broken the rules by "overstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to Uefa between 2012 and 2016", adding that the club "failed to cooperate in the investigation".

In past years, on this thread, there were those who claimed a "metaphorical financial slap-on-the-wrist" would be the only penalty to be seen to be imposed on the "top-name" clubs in Europe.

It’s interesting to see how angrily City have reacted compared to how Chelsea did when they were given their transfer ban (which I think UEFA reduced from what was originally handed out?).
As you say it’ll probably be reduced, but it’s definitely looking like they’ll not be in it next year.

I assume that 5th place in the Premier League suddenly looks a lot more enticing now..?

UEFA didn't reduce it, it got reduced by the CAS on appeal.

Most likely the CAS will uphold the appeal and UEFA will end up with eggs on their faces and a large legal bill. I assume they will go after the Spanish clubs with dodgy accounting next, maybe money bags of PSG?

Widnes 1 ... Hyde United 2

Being drawn away against a side for a lower division is always a chance for a "Hyde United" upset result, but this was a well fought cup match that Hyde deserved to win on the balance of play by the odd goal in three.

Not quite as "nerve wrenching" in the previous 2nd round match against Lancaster City some weeks ago, which finished goal-less and was finally won 5-4 on penalties by Hyde.

Shame this season has been very poor, makes the Scottish & French leagues more competitive and interesting to watch. Too many mistakes made by VAR (look at that tackle by Celso on Saturday) and time wasted waiting for decisions so the season will be a footnote in history of the league.

The battle for the remaining European cup places is more interesting

That assuming the leagues finishes and doesn't get called off when the current Coronavirus gets upgraded to a worldwide pandemic and any large gathering of people are cancelled to try limit the spread

Hyde United 5 ... Lancaster City 2

Ewen Fields was in good condition to host this match against 4th placed Lancaster City and Hyde went 2-0 up after 19 minutes with Lancaster pulling one back on the half hour. The second half then saw four goals scored in the space of 11 minutes early in the second half, three of which were scored by Hyde and they were deserved match winners. The win consolidated Hyde's mid table league position.

One of the longest cup runs ever ...

The FA Trophy is very, very skewed towards teams in the National League to the extent that teams in the fourth tier of non-league football have to fight their way through TEN rounds to get to the final at Wembley. By comparison a Premier League or Championship club only needs to contest FIVE rounds to get to Wembley in the FA Cup.

So step 4 teams haven't a hope in hell in the FA Trophy. But trying telling that to Southern League Division One Central Halesowen Town. Thus far the Yeltz have fought their way through NINE rounds to reach the two-legged semi-final, playing FIFTEEN games in the process, with at least two to come. And they have already defeated SIX teams from higher divisions.

This all begs the question as to why the FA Trophy is seeded. It isn't the FA Cup where there is big element of glamour attached to the bigger clubs. With only 296 entries, the competition could be played in eight full rounds with a small preliminary round.

Halesowen are also top of their league despite having played fewer games than their rivals.
