Was in this station 2 weeks ago and the underpass to the Motherwell-bound platform was in very poor condition. Contacted ScotRail.

Came back today and it is still absolutely filthy.

I have some photos attached. The underpass is caked in rust and mold. Also some puddles in it. Whilst I get that stations can take a beating during the winter, I'm shocked that this station passed Health & Safety as it seems like an accident waiting to happen. It's obviously never maintained

The shelter on the southbound platform also has a broken window meaning several leaks. Again, not fixed.

My question is - do you think that this station actually safe for use? What can be done to improve it?

(On a side-note, whilst this station is by far the worst, so many of the stations on the North Clyde & Argyle Lines need work - e.g. Bridgeton, Central Low Level, Anderston, High Street, Charing Cross).

Coatbridge Central has been terribly grotty ever since it was 're-opened' to local services in 1987, initially only from Motherwell.

Whilst damp and rust isn't pretty I am not sure that it is an 'accident waiting to happen'. Handrails and steps seem to be sound. Isn't this more of a 'SQUIRE' (service quality) issue?

Where I think it is dangerous is the puddles and fairly slippery stairs. Coatbridge has it's share of elderly folks and I don't think it would be safe for them to use, particularly if there are slipping hazards. It just strikes me as somewhere where someone would likely have a fall.

Seeing those photographs certainly brings back a few memories (we used to use the station to board and alight from the Clansman back in the day). I didn't realise that the underpass was still in use, although I perhaps had made this assumption due to the front entrance being blocked off.

It's always been a dilapidated backwater for as long as I can remember, but it does get around 50k entries and exits a year, so it shouldn't be as neglected as it is.

But is it Scotland's most hopeless station with that sort of level of use, I doubt it, maybe we should start a Trivia thread on that?

I think it get around 48k, which is pretty low considering the busy area/lines it is situated on. It has always seemed like a bit of a dead station to me, there are about 5 stations in Coatbridge that are more useful and more used. All have better frequencies and have links to Edinburgh and/or Glasgow (direct links, not via a magical mystery tour of the Argyle Line).

I do remember how quiet the single 156 units used to be on the old hourly Cumbernauld-Motherwell service. I think that was the only service that served Coatbridge Central for some time, with all of the other stops on the route having a ‘main’ service alongside it (FKG-Cumbernauld-GLQ, Whifflet Line, Argyle Line etc). I’m not sure if the Argyle Line swallowing it up has made a difference or not.

I thought some services terminated around Coatbridge Central as I'm sure I saw Class 320s on it (prior to the mass wiring seen in Scotland in recent years).

It used to have an hourly Argyle line service before the Motherwell - Cumbernauld started.
