At Birmingham Snow Hill today, I noticed that the PIS display, after scrolling through the stations, noted that the next train was not calling at Small Heath or Tyseley. I was wondering if there are any other places where the PIS specifically mentions stations that the train doesn't call at.

Hooton and Bache for Capenhurst, in fact there are large signs at both stations reminding drivers to check their diagrams and announcements on-board the train too.

Yes London Bridge had this - 'Not Calling at Lee, Mottingham or Albany Park' on a scheduled semi-fast via Sidcup

Was it running on time or had those station calls been ripped out?

If there's any delay, WMT love to run express to Shirley, despite a large number of the passengers wanting the inner 5 stations.

There are however some Stratford line services (and the peak extra) which do first stop Spring Road.

It's been on the screens at Snow Hill since the early LM days. Presumably it's for the benefit of people arriving at the last second thinking everything stops everywhere (like the Cross City) although Small Heath and Tyseley are hardly major stations :D

Shrewsbury to Chester via Crewe always says it’s not stopping at gobowen, chirk, Ruabon and Wrexham. (Mainly because it doesn’t pass these stations)

"This train is not calling at St Johns" was part of the poetry of announcements at London Bridge for many a long year

In the days of Solari displays I believe this was common as on all stations stoppers there wasn't room to list them all out unlike today.

Still usual practice on DB - "haelt nicht in X" where that would normally be part of the pattern to stop there.

One TL yesterday at St Pancras had the stopping pattern advertised then below had the three stations listed with a line though them with a message stating that the train wasn't stopping there.

Made it quite easy to understand IMO.

A slight deviation from the topic but platform screens at London Waterloo (Main) and London Victoria quite often show; "This train is not scheduled to call at this station" - which is worrying as they're both termini!

Llandudno Junction has big notice on the PIS saying "THIS TRAIN RUNS NON STOP TO CHESTER" on the fast trains and people still board for the intermediate stations despite visual and aural warnings.

Some stations west of Taunton inclusive that have trains run non-stop to Reading typically list this, if that counts.

Yes London Bridge had this - 'Not Calling at Lee, Mottingham or Albany Park' on a scheduled semi-fast via Sidcup
While that was useful in the early days of the service, it's being going for nearly 2 years now so I wonder if it would be easier just to say "semi-fast service" or something similar instead; the current listing is rather wordy for the display.

If stations that are not even passed are mentioned then that opens up a vast seam of possibilities! For example, trains on the Richmond line would be listed as not calling at Barnes Bridge, etc, etc.

Woolwich Dockyard was the same, specifically mentioned as not stopping there as far back as the 1960s.

But the Underground goes back even further. There was established non-stopping of lightly used inner stations almost from the start, a number of which have now closed. "Passing Brompton Road", between Knightsbridge and South Ken, and served only by alternate trains, became so well known from announcements at other Piccadilly stations that a 1920s West End theatre play was named after it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brompton_Road_tube_station#In_popular_culture

PIS on all 166's going to Bristol temple meads from Severn beach never mentions St andrews road, but always does in the other direction

This is going to be like the "not valid on the Isle of Wight Hovercraft" thing that appears against pretty much all tickets on some TVMs (because it's a ticket type level restriction, or something) :)

I think in your case (the former), the unit’s PIS was out of sync. Either GPS or wheel rotations gone wrong. The latter sounds like a completely wrong route code had been put in though.

On the first one it knew where it was as It arrived at chinley. Said “this is Chinley” “this train is for Sheffield the next stop is dore”

The other one I have no idea! Marple is on the Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield line and Halifax is on the Manchester Victoria to Leeds Line!

Didn't the old Metropolitan Line departure boards at stations such as Kings Cross say something like "not stopping at Wembley Park, Preston Road and Northwick Park" whenever a northbound fast or semi-fast service was due?

That happens when scheduled stops are cancelled.

This thread (I believe, although it seems others are as confused as me!) is about listing non-stopping stations which are not even scheduled stops.

Quite likely. The District did the same in the peak, when a westbound Circle turned off at South Ken (as they once did) the following District was non-stopped at South Ken and Gloucester Road, and when a Wimbledon train turned off at Earls Court the following Richmond one skipped West Ken and Barons Court, all to even out intervals. The platform indicators had special supplementary displays for this.

If you are just omitting a couple of stations it's much more effective to list them, rather than list out all the stops and expect people to spot the omission at the relevant point.

Had many a near heart attack in CT days coming from Birmingham, first stop Wilnecote or Tamworth and the PIS would suddenly flash up "Next stop Water Orton"!

Generally removed now from what I've seen. Haven't seen it post Dec '19

No it isn't. It's lazy, bad communication.

Where do such approaches leave TOCs responsibilites towards vulnerable passengers who might unexpectedly find themselves at an unfamiliar station?

Oh right, December happened to be when I last used the service (I typically only use it if staying with my immediate family in Crayford).

The stations not served list, as well as being long, was also incomplete, as I've never seen it mention that Hither Green isn't served either (which gets plenty of other services anyway of course).
