Not cleared south of Chesterfield (I thought?)...
Not cleared south of Chesterfield on the Northern route to Nottingham via Ilkeston / Radford I believe. Could (and did, when on the way to Kingsbury - and presumably when they left BREL from new) run to Derby but seeing as NT only go to Nottingham that way once a day it was a bit academic (and I'm not sure they were cleared through Long Eaton and Beeston either). Anyway, Pacers have not done Nottinghams - I suspect if they had been cleared EMT would in the past have found an excuse to acquire some and inflict them on us locals of the area.

What is the best way to view the 142s that are stored on Heaton? National rail or Metro?

Thanks.
There's a Youtube video taken at Chillingham Road Metro station footbridge that shows most of the southern end of the depot (which is handily where the Pacers are stored, in four adjacent sidings). Passing on a mainline train should also show them BUT if there's one or more trains in for fuel/servicing then they might get in the way. RTT (today) shows that the best time for a "drive by" is between 10 AM and 6:50 PM (and it'll be dark by then anyway), with just one TPE train potentially lurking on shed, somewhere. If you do visit, please let us know what you find!

142065 has joined 142068 on driver training at York. It was swapped out for 142071
Interesting - are both units used or is one there as "insurance" purposes only? RTT seems to suggest that all the route learning runs can be covered by just one unit.

I was thinking about how flexible the 142, 144, 150, 153, 155, 156 & 158 are as they can all hook up to give extra capacity.
I suppose the demise of the 142 & 144 (northern region) means that flexibility is reduce quite a bit.

Unless I'm mistaken, 195's can only hook up to each other and not to any of the 140/150?

Wouldn't it be great iff a 142 Pacer rescued a failed 769 in public service. That would be what you would call a result:lol:

Wrong forum , I know, but does anyone know what failed on that 769 at Southport.
I wonder if anyone has thought about multiple working with a 769 and a 15x?
I know the pacers had their problems but overall the bugs were rectified and they achieved a life way past what was envisaged.
I wonder if the that 319 bimode can shake off its rather problematic image.

Cool as it would be, they have different couplers so it wouldn't be possible. Besides which, I'm no expert but I would imagine the power, braking and electrical systems might be incompatible too.

142078 was lined up ready for service on Newton Heath late last night, coupled to 150147 IIRC.

Slightly off topic however.
For the Pacers disposed of to preservation, in the event of a breakdown is there any means of coupling to a drawhook?
This would also affect units being shunted on Heritage lines.

Does anyone know whether or not 142078 and 142090 are still in service?
Heard 142078 is safe just 142090 with its 45 mph restriction due to a damper. But 142078 maybe a spare a few moor times. Also heard 142078 could be used more mcv side. Its recent workings is a favourite for kirkbys and the Wigan to Blackburns . Ie the Blackburn rover.

142078 was back out today but terminated at mcv at 1746 with 156460, due to a fault, 142078 is it okay , despite having a fault, if it is 142078, ie never made southport on 1736.

Theres photos out of there of locos coupled to 142s via an emergency adaptor that fits the BSI coupler and is kept in a storage cupboard somewhere on the 15x units. So far as I know they werent carried on 142s.

Adaptor couplers used to be in a box under the secondmans side of the cab on 150s, inside the unit on 153/155/156. Once coupled that way they're 5mph only, to clear the main line, with a competent person ready to apply the parking brake on the unit if it divides. There is no way of the loco controlling the three-step westcode brake so it's a 'swinger'.

However, I wonder if the Class 37s & 47s that have done 313 & 315 scrap drags could control the 3 step brake?

So unlikely to be a readily movable piece of rolling stock on a preserved line unless under own power.
