Personally a fan of this being removed. Station staff get endlessly frustrated when people walk down to their "usual" platform then due to what could be multiple factors, it's not on the "usual" platform (read: not an alteration as it was never advertised!) and grumble at the staff.

Predicted platforms don't help much more either. At terminals, it is much safer (most of the time) for passengers to remain on the concourse during peak times and wait until it's ready. But you'll never be able to avoid some regulars going to the platform then being caught out! Good announcements solve this problem for the most part.
But good announcements are something we just don’t get!

I do know of people who are frustrated by this problem as they find the information gives them independence because they are unable to read the station information screens. Finding staff is also difficult sometimes so having that information already available as you arrive at a station you know is invaluable

The subway at London Waterloo use to be bad. Manual announcements never played down there so during disruption it wouldn't be so easy to know where to go. One could go to the concourse but why fill it up even more!

I've not used the subway much for a while now so things may have improved.

And where exactly are those good announcements? Because they do not exist in my experience at a lot of stations (including Paddington, Temple Meads and Cardiff Central).

Depends where you are of course. My example generally related to terminal stations where PA systems and announcements I've found are generally quite good. Some systems are clearly fairly old and no matter how good the announcer, the audio just doesn't carry across all parts of the station.

To get the information? I'm sorry but I don't have loads of sympathy for people that complain about not getting information if they are proactively putting themselves in a situation that makes that harder.

There are plenty of departure screens all over Waterloo now, no need for announcements - many airports do without them. There are always staff to ask at the barrier line if visually impaired.

So you do think those changing trains at Waterloo during disruption should crowd the Waterloo concourse even more or should they use the subway to enable the concourse to be less crowded?

Glad to hear it. Alas these screens have a habit of removing trains shortly before they are scheduled to depart.

The problem is the trains might then not depart until 6 minutes after they were meant to. So people who could have been on a train, are not.

Hence the usefulness of the app in such circumstances, as the app doesn't remove the trains.

At least from my pov, I am not complaining about announcements not being audible. I am talking about them not existing at all.
I often travel from Temple Meads to Cardiff and time and time again during disruption at both Cardiff Central and Bristol Temple Meads, there are no or very few announcements at all about the disruption and what options passengers have. And as for staff - forget it. They all seem to disappear when passengers need them the most!

Departure screens aren't useful if all they are saying is "delayed". Or in some cases the wrong platform, or in other cases no platform at all.
On more than one occasion I have been informed of a platform change via an app or website before the platform screens have changed.

I always find RTT very accurate as to platform numbers. It's certainly a big hr.p when you know that there is likely to be limited free seats on a train and so can get the right platform early.

I've just tried a number of different android rail apps and, for the limited number of stations I checked, they are all showing platform numbers again.

Thanks you for the info, looks to be working again for the stations I use. :)
