I've decided to create a new thread discussing school closures and when people roughly think they'll reopen at a guess and why you think that

The general consensus amonst newspapers and everyone else seems to be that schools will open in september
Do you agree with that or do you think different, let me know your thoughts via the poll and in the thread

I think it's pretty much been stated that "school's out for summer" by the Government hasn't it?
Although the government didn't officially say that, most people did treat it as they're last day until september and I see it being that way. After easter is to early and the middle of june I think is too late so I think jf they were to open i would say it would have to be during May, and i doubt that they'll reopen in early may so Im 90% sure that they'll reopen in September and no earlier.

Can August be added as an option? As I reckon the Scottish schools will go back then, as they normally would.

For me there's no chance of it restarting before September since I'm in year 11 and GCSEs have been cancelled. I really hope that school restarts in September, though it wouldn't surprise me if it took even longer than that.

I agree with you Im in my first year of college but I doubt everyone will be going back before september and I think the cances are slim and it would surprise me if we returned before. You year 11s will 100% be off until september

What happens to the GCSE pupils, do they go off their mock results + appraisal?

The situation was confused as GCSE and A level students leave in May anyway, hence the matter of it possibly being their last day of the year.

However teachers and those I know with children outside of these years have been told not to rule out a possible return after Spring Bank holiday.

I don't think there would be a point for schools to reopen after late may bank holiday/may half term as its only 6 - 8 weeks before schools close in september anyway and some college course years end in june so I doubt it.

As I think it's not that unlikely the "lockdown" could last 12 weeks, I don't believe schools will re-open this side of summer.

Therefore I would expect late-August for Scottish schools and September for the rest of the UK at the earliest

Yeah, pretty much. We’ve been asked to grade our Y2s, Y6s and Y11s off a ‘teacher assessment’. This ‘should’ be a myriad of data triangulated from class work, mock exams, homework - anything the teaching staff has seen that would go forwards with the result they’re giving.

You can still go outside for excercise/shopping. So that's twice daily if you want.
Yeah thats true. I forgot about that. I personally think that the rules may be relaxed and some places to reopen in 3 weeks. Though I doubt that schools will be one of the first to reopen

Assuming that the modelling is approximately correct, they expect the peak of cases to be late June/early July; presumably that's where the 12 week thing cones from.

While I believe they have to decide on 3 weeks whether to renew restrictions, if they do relax them it could result in what they don't want happening - the NHS being swamped with more cases than it can reasonably manage at one time.

I would, as I'm sure most of us would, for the restrictions to be relaxed in three weeks but only if it can be done so without having a negative impact on the number of cases.

It's still an ever changing situation, all we can really do is simply wait and see how matters develop over the next three weeks.

I think this whole thing has been a gradual withdrawal of liberties for a full on lockdown in three weeks. We saw it happen last week - social distancing for a week or so, closure of bars, clubs and restaurants, schools and others and then lockdown.

Has anyone got children in the key worker schools?

Alternatively anyone attending the schools or working in them?

What it is like? What kind of school work is being done? Are you able to keep a distance between people?

If your not in school but home, what kind of work are you doing at home?

Are those children who have to go to school doing more work than those at home?

I'm in year 13 and currently doing the work set by my teachers at home. This is effectively "finish the course". However, I know some people who aren't bothering to do any schoolwork, ranging from playing Minecraft all day to doing extra shifts at Tesco etc.
I still don't fully know what the long-term outcome of this closure is - once I've finished the courses I'm doing (which will probably be around the end of next week) do I then have a really long holiday?

The routine of setting school work remotely* seems to be bedding in really well.

So much so that trying to change back again before the summer holidays**
will probably just cause more disruption than good.

*Actually, very good preparation of how their future workplaces may function - not a 9-5 job any more

**Maybe if things go well a return for a week or so in July before the holidays for end-of-year type celebrations. But September "proper"

One of ours will be starting Primary School in September... but in all likelihood may not attend his nursery again before then. Reception class teachers may have a bit more challenge this year with kids who may have been out of education for many months.

I wouldn't think that they'll be starting up again before September. At uni, they've decided that all my exams this summer (late May/early June) will be online in some form, and my graduation ceremony (originally due to be mid July) has been cancelled with the possibility of something once it's been rearranged, so they're clearly expecting restrictions to be dragging on for a while.

I would expect schools to be among the last things to re-start.
