I'm sure I have been through a station in London where looking down from the platform you are actually over the Thames?
Anyhow, any platforms which are built over water?? Don't count small streams!

Possibly London Blackfriars

Blackfriars is now almost completely above the Thames, except a relatively small distance at either bank. Before the rebuild it was mostly over the water, but only on the north side of the river.

The vast majority of Portsmouth Harbour is above the water, although you don’t see it so obviously.

The River Sheaf flows underground beneath Sheffield Midland station, and Leeds City is built over the River Aire.

Ryde Pier Head and Lymington Pier are both above the sea.

Shrewsbury. The Severn is wide enough to row on there, and only gets wider towards the sea. And it's where I learnt to row, hence my forum name.

Do the platforms at Dawlish extend as far as the small river that runs through the centre of town?

If not, Dawlish arguably still qualifies for this thread as it occasionally ends up under the sea!

Ha!
How many of the above stations can you actually look down over the river, over the platform fence? NB Ryde pier head is an obvious answer - dunno why that didn't immediately spring to mind!

The river can be seen at Leeds from platform 17, from the footbridge and from the southern entrance.

Manchester Victoria. The River Irk passes below parts of the station just before the river joins the River Irwell. The Irwell used to flow under the old Platform 11 Middle, but I think it now just misses the current west end of Manchester Victoria.

At Bristol Temple Meads, the west end platforms cross the new cut of the River Avon. At the east end, a couple of the platforms just extend above the start of the floating harbour, which is the original course of the River Avon. The island platforms make it difficult to see the water from them though.

On a smaller scale, Highbridge station platforms extend across the River Brue which is easily seen from them.

I think you're right that the Irwell just misses the west end of the platforms. The Irk flows right under the concourse from east to west around about 60 feet under where the WHSmith/Costa Coffee shops currently are.

Forgot to add on my previous post that the up main platform at Bath Spa extends west across the River Avon with the river easily seen from it.

Dependent on which coach you are in at Chesterfield, you will find yourself sat over the River Rother that flows under Platform 1 & 2, the River often floods the houses you can see to the rear of Platform 1

The length of platform that trains actually stop at is completely over the Thames, even 12-cars. The station extends back to the banks, (it would be difficult getting to or from the trains otherwise)!

This photo (click on it to go to the larger original) shows that two platforms at Charing Cross have been extended far enough onto the bridge to just be over the Thames:

Technically, I'm not entirely sure they're actually over the river but I don't think I've ever checked in great detail. The bridge goes over part of the Embankment too.

I was charmed to find there were Mallard (the ducks not the A4) underneath Chesterfield station!

The waiting room at Deganwy (downside) used to be built out over the estuary. Long gone. (The waiting room, not the estuary)

That's given me an idea for another thread, strangest animals seen on a platform! Bet those on the Highlands lines have seen many a deer!

Llandudno has had the Kashmiri Goats off the Great Orme roaming around the streets.
I don't know if they've got on to the station platforms though.:D
