Hey there.

As you probably know, it's coming up to the summer holidays! I'm going to be travelling to Lakeside a lot (near the Chafford Hundred station) and am looking for the cheapest way for me to get there. I'm 16-years-old and currently reside in Shenfield, near Brentwood.

The people that I'll be going with live in Hornchurch but I don't necessarily need to meet them there; we can meet at the 'start' of the journey (i.e. Romford/Upminster?). I'm just really wanting to know the cheapest possible way for me to get to Chafford Hundred from Shenfield and, if it involves an Oyster card, how does that work?

Thanks in advance!

Conzy.

P.S. My friend said he can get a free bus from Romford to Chafford Hundred with an Oyster Card? I can travel with buses if that's cheaper/easier.

Get yourself a 16-25 railcard would be the first thing I'd suggest, that will save you a few quid on most journeys. For your journey between Chafford and Shenfield it saves you £2.65 on an off peak return (£7.80 without railcard compared to £5.15 with railcard).

Right thanks, but damn that's still quite expensive.

Is it true that I can get a free bus from Romford to Chafford Hundred? If so, would it be cheaper to get a train from Shenfield to Romford and then get a bus to Chafford Hundred?

Thanks for the prompt reply,

Conzy.

Not really, you'd be doing 60 miles and at £5 for the whole journey its only about 8p per mile!

Sorry I have no idea, I live about 200 miles away from your area so my knowledge of the bus routes is understandbly limited

Yeah I've gotcha, but I was planning on going there quite often (don't ask!), like 4 times a week, so I'm trying to keep the costs down. I'm willing to pay that much but any cheaper alternatives would be appreciated!

I'll check out about the buses, thanks for your input.

Does anybody else know a cheaper way?!

thanks for your input.

No problem! Sorry I couldn't help more!

Oh, and it just ocurred to me that it would probably be useful for others if you could give some idea of what time of day your likely to be travelling and if its going to be weekday or weekend.

Nah you've been a great help!

And yeah my bad, I'll be travelling both on weekdays and weekends, but if it's much cheaper on weekdays I'll just travel then. And in terms of time, I'd be going at like 10:30-11:00 in the morning and then coming back around 4:00-5:30.

Thanks in advance!

Which days of the week do you want to go? and what time do you want to go & come back?

Peter

Erm, probably 3 or 4 times during the week and then either 0 or 1 on the weekend (depending on how expensive it is - am I right in thinking it's more expensive at the weekend?). I'd be going there around 10:00 or 11:00 in the morning and coming back around 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon.

Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks, I'll check that site out.

P.S. Should I be getting an oyster card or a travelcard?

Right, I think I've got this sorted. Bear with me!

If I get a train to Romford from Shenfield, it costs me £3.70 and £2.45 with the 16-25 travelcard. And then, according to my friends, you can get a free bus from Romford > Chafford Hundred with a 16-18 Oyster card?

Can anybody confirm this?!

You need to live in a London Borough (and be in full-time education) to get a oystercard giving free bus travel.
You can get one giving half-fare travel which would be 60p for each single journey.

Right - An 16+ Oyster Photocard, then get a 16-25 NR Railcard Added to It.

Thanks man, can you confirm that the 16+ Oyster Photocard will get me a free bus from Romford > Chafford Hundred?

So since I live in Shenfield, I have to pay 60p for a bus journey from Romford to Chafford Hundred?

Thanks for all the prompt replies by the way, great forum.

No unless:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14308.aspx

Otherwise - you can get 7 Day, monthly or longer period Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes at child rate (you can't get longer than a four-month Travelcard).

Right thanks. I'm not so bothered about paying 60p/day for the Romford > Chafford Hundred bus but are you 100% that it's only 60p? Oh, and ****. I just realised all of these need to be return too.

No the bus would be £4 return (£2 Each Way) ;)

The Bus (370) would take you right into Lakeside if that's where your going, If not your have to walk from Lakeside to Chafford Hundred.

If I understand this correctly , http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14415.aspx shows that the bus fare, with an Oyster pay-as-you-go card and 16+ photocard IS 60p for each journey, not £2 - that is the CASH fare (ie for those without an oystercard, either 16+ or 18+)

One cheaper, but slower, way of doing this (but which doesn't involve trains at all, so might be off topic here), presuming you can get to Brentwood High Street from Shenfield on foot (or bike) easily enough might be to get a Transport for London bus pass - which with a 16+ oyster card costs £8.30 a week or £31.90 a month (see the same page linked to above) .

Obviously whether this is worth it or not depends on how frequently you'd be making the journey. The round trip on each day would cost £1.95 ("the daily price cap" - which is less than 4 * 60p): so it would only be worth buying the weekly bus pass if you were doing the journey on at least 5 days in the week, although the monthly one would work out cheaper if you were doing the journey on only 16 days in the month

You could use this ticket to get the 498 bus from Brentwood to Romford, then the 370 to Lakeside.

(You couldn't use it to get any direct buses from Brentwood to Lakeside, as they aren't operated for TfL, even though the 265 has red London buses)

Thanks very much for the informative response!

The cheaper and slower way does sound good but it's a bit impractical; I'm meant to be meeting a few people at Romford so would prefer getting a train to Romford, bus to Lakeside and then repeat that process on the way back.

I checked out http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14415.aspx but are you sure the 60p thing applies to Oyster holders that reside outside of London (i.e. Shenfield)?

Thanks in advance! You've all been tremendously helpful!

Yes, see here http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14308.aspx and https://photocard.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/gotoApply.do?type=under18visitor&from=home which both make clear that holders of this card who live in Greater London get free bus travel, and those who live outside Greater London with a 16-18 Oyster card get half-price travel. The normal adult bus fare with an oyster card is £1.20 ...so half that is 60p.

Note that TfL say it takes 2-3 weeks to process an application for the card (which they will post to you)

the bus from brentwood to romford runs every half hour, and only takes 20mins...

rang up tfl for you.what w-on-sea is saying is correct

i'd invest in the railcard @ 24pound. the saving's will pay itself off.

here's an idea for the train..

if you say your going do it 4 times a week..

16-25 Railcard £3.45 Off Peak Return Shenfield to Romford

4 x £3.45 = £13.80

2singles bus from Romford to Lakeside

4 x £1.20 = £4.80

Total Price £18.60

Nearly right - the 16-25 annual railcard is £26 or the 3-year one is £65 which saves you £13.
