The current situation has seen changes in stock use with, it seems, some trains being retired earlier than planned. That I know of, Greater Anglia have withdrawn their Mark 3 fleet, and should easily have enough 745s in service by the time they can go back to a "normal" timetable. Likewise, Scotrail have withdrawn the "classic" shortened HSTs and will hopefully only have refurbs from now on.
What of other operators? are East midlands still running HSTs? They'll not have the replacement fleet in place this year. The other would be Chiltern-I'm guessing the Banbury set isn't running? I've heard that this is to be replaced, but will the replacement get powered doors?

GWR will be operating slam doors on the Night Riviera for the foreseeable future.

EMR will be operating slam door HSTs until their Hitachi trains replace them
No they won’t. The EMR HSTs are planned to finish by the end of this year. There has been plenty of conversation on this on here in recent months.

I must admit to a certain nostalgia for slam doors and able to do that on the Night Riviera in March, a nice satisfying "clunk" when you shut it.

At the same time I understand the need to move over to remote guard operated doors.

When slam doors were in common use, there have been regular incidents of people falling out of the doors, either its not closed properly or they were fiddling with the handle and leaning out of them, the vast majority is when the opening side is against the direction of travel and the wind can catch it and pulling it open, trailing door edges rarely did.

This led to a rethink of door designs.

Only heritage railways mostly operated them, to date I've not heard much of people falling out, I think this is probably because visitors are not in a hurry and less likely to stand by doors to lean out.

Around 2005/2006-ish I believe, but no doubt someone could give an exact date!

3rd rail slammers on the ex-Southern Region?

Edit: Come to think of it, did the set used until about 2010 on the Lymington branch ever get CDR?

And if the Hitachi trains aren’t ready by then? It’s likely there’ll be a short extension to the exemption (another 3 months perhaps) otherwise there’ll be services that can’t run.

Yeah the 2 3CIGs left operating the branched were indeed fitted with Central Door Locking.

Yes, they both had a system of door locking equipment added, the hardware was visible on the exteriors. I expect some of the videos will show enough detail.

The Hitachi units aren’t due by then, it‘s supposed to be 222s, 180s and 360s providing all services into St Pancras.

The Hitachi trains are not directly replacing the HSTs. This has been discussed at some length on here: HST replacement is based on a cascade initiated by Corby electrification and subsequent (re-)deployment of the 222 fleet and incoming Class 180s.

And that's the point "Guard operated doors". On so many new trains the driver plays a part in their operation if not all of it. Elsewhere it's been said East-West rail will have DCO from new on its trains.

Not exactly a normal service, but the Scotrail 68+Mk 2s are expected to carry on for the rest of this year, and I thought I saw a PRM derogation for them lasting for even longer?

Meant to finish after this year's summer timetable.

You'd probably do that for a brand new railway as there's nothing to have a dispute over because there are no existing staff.

EMR doesn't, so far as I recall, have any proposal for DOO in its franchise agreement. And if we're going to need mass job creation schemes to get the economy moving, I can't see the Government pushing any new ones any time soon, either. I'd venture it as likely EWR will have OBSs or similar even if the guard doesn't do the doors.

That was always amusing. People in so much of a hurry that they hurled themselves out onto the platform, only for the train to continue rushing up the platform. The 'early leavers' were then miles up the platform with further to run than if they had stayed put. Obviously central door locking had a safety benefit, but it probably meant some people got to their destination faster, too!

Don't they have CDR though? So no unlocked doors

Indeed, they were fitted with a similar system to that of the not yet mentioned Chiltern 121s.

There will be another Slam Door Unit eventually operating on part of the mainline - the Swanage Railway's 117 & 121. They have also been fitted with a similar system to that used on the Chiltern Bubble Car fleet and of course will eventually enter service on the Wareham to Corfe Castle / Swanage services.

On the LTS back in the day, a lot of people got off and slammed the door shut behind them before the train stopped!
