It's not hard at all. I use watercolours as used for art, plenty of water then wipe off after 5 seconds. It works and details get kept in indentures more than on the flat body. Rough/porous surfaces are best though.

I'm not so worried about my Scottish/GB stock, that's easily obtained if I go really wrong and most wasn't that expensive, it's my much more expensive CIE stock I'm worried about(!).

Love it.... and I'm chuffed (sorry no punn intended) to bits that my video inspired someone to do the same

Well I to have been inspired by the support and encouragement from the forum, and spent the weekend altering the platforms (now repainted) and ballasting the track. I've been a subscriber to Everard Junction on youtube for some time and watched his old video of how he weathered his trackwork.... I've ordered an airbrush kit with compressor which should be here by the end of the week.... 58 and learning a new skill - hopefully I won't screw it up !

The airbrush and compressor arrived yesterday, very impressed with what came in the box for £70 (see attachments). Postie delivered the sleeper grime paint this morning so jumped into the deep end and gave it a go. I'm quite happy with the results. Some parts came out better than others, but I', sure once I've blended in some scatter materials etc it will all fit in nicely. Here are some shots, which to be fair don't do it justice... to the naked eye its less of a mess :)

For a first time at airbrushing, and having never used one other than a cheap one that uses a gas can to spray some wagon sides, I feel I did alright.

I still need to clean the rail head, and any pain that got inside the point blades, but I'll wait for the paint to dry first.

Looks great! Love the effect an airbrush gives. Funnily enough I did the same this week and bought my first proper airbrush kit. I’m eagerly awaiting delivery of it later this afternoon so I can have a go this weekend. Glad to hear it went well for you and hoping I can achieve similar results.

Great job @malc-c. I had to remind myself that it was N gauge and not 00 so that’s a good sign!

I did a couple more videos earlier (none of them with fake sound this time unfortunately).
This is 50032 heading towards Exeter:

This one is of 37035 arriving to pick up some wagons:

And this is of 33102 on a Barnstaple to Exeter stopping at the station:

In my head me and Mrs C live in the station house... ;)

Nice, I like the way you have lit the layout
To be honest there’s no great secret to that. It’s in the front (spare for the moment) bedroom which has a big window, and I’ve just renovated the room and painted it with white paint (which was all I could get hold of a few weeks ago when I was working through my jobs list).

The white does work as a background though, and the bright light helps because I’m trying to model it in summer.

I’m starting to run out of things to do on this now though, and my mind is being slowly drawn towards the next project which will be Eggesford (the next station north of Lapford).
My sons best friend has the use of a 3D printer, and I’m thinking of paying him to scan the station building for me (when we can actually meet up again).
I might add in an extra long gone siding as a bit of modellers license to give some added interest, but yeah, I’m really starting to think about it now.

Here’s some of photos of Eggesford that have been playing on my mind when I’ve been trying to get to sleep recently. ;)
I love the canted track and the level crossing. It could be an interesting model if done properly...

I 'd bought a class 50 from ebay recently.
It needed a little repair to the bogie side frame/ mechanism and to the Louvre slats. Proving that it's not a good idea to multitask , I'd set the loco running while I worked on the fiddly job of reassembling the Louvre slats into their frame.
Of course the bogie side frame decided to detach itself just at the wrong moment and here we have a perfect reconstruction of the up sleeper derailment from the mid 1980's. I was pondering which number to give this loco but I think it has to be Bulwark now?

Yep. Got to be Bulwark.

I must admit that I found myself recreating things like that a couple of months ago when I was bored out of my brain doing my books:

(No tiny people were hurt in these accidents)

That looks nasty! I hope the bodyshell wasn't damaged.
I agree with @Cowley here - it has to be named Bulwark now. I don't think I've actually ever seen a model railway derailment like this, where the engine ends up completely on its side - something different! :D

I bought some tiny street lights off eBay the other day and used a couple for the platform (where they are on the real thing), and I put couple on the road next to the garage and painted the bulbs a kind of pinky orange colour to replicate that yucky 1980s light pollution.

I also made this clip by using a video of 50008 at Exeter a couple of years ago:

Well, I finally have some baseboards and a decent amount of track to work with, so I can start building my layout in the morning. In the past few weeks I've added to my fleet a bit.

My DMU fleet now consists of the aforementioned Bachmann 108, and a Hornby 153. Locomotives are a pair of 37s (429 & 430) and a 47 (828), all by ViTrains. My time period is a little bit confused, but as the saying goes it's my railway and I'll run what I like!

Well that's it exactly and "Rule 1" is the most important rule of course! ;)

I'm having similar issues in that some of my stock is distinctly out of period

When I first got back into modelling, I told myself I'd have nothing post-privatisation... but unfortunately sentimentality got the better of me and I acquired Transrail 37430 Cwmbrân (which many years ago was motive power on a family holiday, albeit in Large Logo livery) and Cotswold Rail 47828 Joe Strummer (purchased solely for the name). Just a shame the hot weather is making me want to avoid being in the cellar!

Also trying to remember another golden rule though: when it comes to trackwork often less is more!

The track plan is something I still haven't fully decided on. It will be kept simple, but how simple is the question

I too intend to have nothing post-privitisation but about half my stock is in post-privitisation colours. Thankfully it all ran under BR first so just so re-liverying will suffice.

My biggest project will by far be re-liverying, detailing and weathering stock, far more so than actually building the layout!

The Clash are my favourite band. I'm considering getting 61656 Leeds United for my layout just for the name, even though it never would have run in Scotland. Out of interest, I met the Cowley Brothers today in Huddersfield!

My collection has also expanded; I've now got 2x20, 1 x37, a Black 5, Jinty, Jubilee, 4MT Tank, 2MT Tank and a 101. Baseboards should arrive in June and then I can finalise the track plan.

That's the best rule: Anything goes. It will come to everyone's layout in some form or another even mine were I run GWR and EMT stock alongside each other.

Think I lost that rule when I built my layout.

I’ve spent some time over the last couple of days trying my hand for the first time at a Scalemodelscenery kit. I went for the bar type catch pits and totally got the first 3 wrong (badly painted the grid the wrong colour for the older bar type pit). I started again doing things a bit more sensibly and now have a result I’m pleased with.

I’ve really enjoyed the learning experience and developing new skills. I can feel a visit to the SMS website coming up tonight after a couple of beers...

Great reading about everyone’s progress. There’s nothing like it when you get bitten by the bug and start getting into it.
It was my birthday yesterday and Mrs C got me this rather lovely Bubble Car, it’s a non powered dummy to run with my 108:

And also this truck that I bought off eBay:

I've been having fun this evening.....

I toyed with the idea of scratch building the station, but given the current situation don't have the luxury of spending hours in my local model shop buying plastic sheeting etc. I've known about Metcalfe kits for some time, but have never purchased one because I thought that kits like Ratio had more realism, but having seen how much the basic station building now costs I had to rethink. So I looked to see what was on offer and their wayside station kit would suit the type of location I'm modelling, and then proceeded to try and find somewhere that had the kit in stock.... With Metcalfe closed due to CV19 restrictions most of the on-line retailers were out of stock. After hours of searching I found a website with stock available... the only drawback was the delivery charge was as much as the kit itself !.... so I made the order up by adding the wayside station shelter, some Ratio platform lamps, a signal kit and some station fencing... so it justified the £8.70 delivery cost :)

The parcel arrived this afternoon, so after we had finished our evening meal I sat down and opened the station kit.... Wow... For the £8.95 you get a lot of parts. The instructions are good, although I do wish that they printed the numbers of the parts on the thick grey card support parts rather than the V's and II's etc. But what did impress me was the precision which the parts interlocked and went together. The weight of this structure is incredible for a card kit, and the modular construction makes it really sturdy... I've stopped building for now as its getting late, plus I want to add some lighting (which i wish I had thought about before gluing the first roof section in place). I will also paint the white card edges before fitting the canopy to make it less like a card model.....

My brother has models of both 61653 Huddersfield Town and 47434 Pride in Huddersfield. The latter even has a few custom details which were apparently unique to that locomotive, though I can't recall what they are off the top of my head! At some point I'm going to track down a model GBRF 66 which will become 66738 Huddersfield Town. As there are models available with both the numbers 728 and 733, it may be a bit easier than it might've been!

That looks great. The only card kits that I’ve got is the BP garage which my other half built and I added some extra detail too - like a proper roof, a light inside and I made some roller shutter doors. And a pub which was a kit of a cottage that I added some detail too as well. For what they cost they were brilliant.

Thanks for the compliment... my fading eyesight and modelling skills are not what they used to be, but I feel my late father-in-law would approve... He used to scratch build trains and gallions from card, all to scale... how he had the patience to make 100 canons, with barrels no more than an inch and a quarter long and right down to the detail of the banding around them still amazes me.

Anyway, I completed the model, and even modified the steps to suit my platform. I'm really pleased how it went and for once things fitted nicely. I've added some ratio fencing, and still need to paint the edges of the card, detail the building with some posters & signs , and add a scratch built clock, but that's for another day. I also want to but some better chimneys....
