Hello all,

First off, an important disclaimer: I am a seasoned commuter on the WCML. I know my way around a Class 220, 350 and 390 and I'm interested in the railways, rolling stock and the like but I have very limited knowledge - I've joined the forum with a genuine interest but please forgive (and don't laugh) at my lack of knowledge!

Last week on Friday 15th May (approx 13:00 give or take 45 minutes), I saw some unusual activity on the WCML that was not of the regular rolling stock traffic and I was wondering if anybody knew what it might've been.

It appeared to be x4 all-white Driving Van Trailers (or similar), connected to each other passing over the viaduct at Wolverton. No passenger carriages, just four units. It was definitely of that era, so not a recent engine.

Does anybody know what this might have been?

Best wishes,
Mike.

As mentioned above, they're off to Freightliner and are currently stored at Crewe Basford Hall awaiting the modifications for freight work, before they re-enter service again.

Interesting. I didn't consider that alterations would be needed to go from hauling carriages to freight.

Thank you gents and for humouring my lack of industry knowledge. You more than make up for it.

Predominately the mods include the changing of the buffers and the removal of the coach rubbing plates. There's some internal stuff too I believe and of course the eventual repaint.

Buckeye removal as well. Internally I think they would be getting the current limiting mod when working in multiple.

Funnily enough they used to pound up and down the WCML until the mid-00s

Are you aware of a web site called WXNN? It is railway news site where enthusiasts submit photographs of their recent sightings. Photos of these class 90’s appeared on there the other day. It is only £10 for a year and usually captures most interesting or unusual movements, I find it invaluable.
