Hiya

A family member used to get six free train tickets per year as a courtesy of South West Trains for purchasing an Annual Gold Card. They allow free weekend and Friday travel on the SWT network and anyone can use them - as long as he is travelling with them, and he has to have his gold card present.

He saved them all up over the years and he has many left. However, though he continues to buy an Annual Gold Card every year, South Western Railway took over in 2017 of course and did not distribute these free travel cards like South West Trains did. We have loads left that we’d love to use though. Will they be accepted as valid though on SWR three years on from the take over? He still has a gold card and there was never any expiry date or anything? We don’t want to travel only for a guard to say that was the old company and issue us a hefty fine!

Thanks

They're still valid, not that unusual to see people with them still.

The FAQ confirms it under "Will I still receive the six free passes when I purchase my annual season ticket?":

South Western Railway said:
"We will be continuing to accept the free weekend travel tickets you were offered by the previous franchisee, and these will be valid for use as long as you maintain a Gold Card season ticket for a SWR route and the original terms and conditions of issue will apply."

Ticket Acceptance
If you have a ticket that is for a specific train operator this may be used on any service provided by any operator between the same start and end station, group or Zone.

Normal Peak/Off-Peak time restrictions will still apply.

I assume give the above, they would currently be valid on another train operators service, especially if SWR aren't running a service on the line in question. Asked on here before and the answer was yes but I'm double checking again as there is a journey I'd like to make in perticular.
