SWR are presently recruiting for qualified drivers at the new Feltham depot being constructed for the class 701 Aventra stock. I was also wondering if Woking drivers sign for the Chertsey branch line too, also not already mentioned.
I’ll add that in the driver depots thread.
Don't Northern crews in Sheffield do Manchester Picc?
Nope, because it’s a further ATN depot and Manchester - Sheffield was a former FNW service. Manchester Piccadilly do all the Hope Valley work for Northern

Thanks again to everyone for all the help I've received so far. I've actually now run into a hurdle as the post with all the information on it has reached 50000 characters, which apparently is the limit of the forum. I'm going to message the @Moderating team to see if they can split the first post in two for me, but until then there might be a slight delay before I can add in any more information. Please do keep sending it my way though and I'll update as soon as I can!

I’ll add that in the driver depots thread.

Looks like you pre-empted me because I was meaning to suggest that to you. As far as I know construction of the depot has still been ongoing during the covid period.

I think we once had a discussion about how it might be an idea to split the initial post, now containing the spoilers, on the basis of region which was a bit of a non-starter. I was then wondering if it should be split on the basis of the BR sectors of Inter City, Network South East and Regional Railways, but even that is not clear cut because EMR and GWR operate Inter City services as well as regional services. Even Transpennine Express is not so easy to categorise anymore.

Maybe it might be an idea to divide solely on the basis of whether an operator works out of London or not???

Thanks to @ainsworth74 for so kindly splitting the post for me, that should keep us ticking over for a while.

I think for now I'm just going to keep it simple and split it half and half, and keep it to alphabetical, but thanks for the suggestion!

Liverpool

Traction:
185 + 802

Routes:

Liverpool - York via Manchester Victoria, Huddersfield and Leeds

Manchester Victoria - Manchester Airport via the Orsdall Chord

Manchester Piccadilly - Stalybridge via Guide Bridge

Edge Hill - Castlefield Junction via Warrington Central currently as a diversion

Edge Hill depot

No Liverpool drivers sign diversions except the Cheshire Lines.

It should also be noted that all Liverpool conductors sign York - Newcastle Central and some still sign York - Scarborough

Manchester Piccadilly

There's 3 links at Piccadilly. The Hull Link, Scarborough link and West Coast link.

Hull link

Traction:
185

Routes:

Liverpool - York via Manchester Victoria, Huddersfield and Leeds

Manchester Victoria - Manchester Airport via the Orsdall Chord

Manchester Piccadilly - Stalybridge via Guide Bridge

Micklefield - Hull

Ardwick depot

Some diversions - can't remember which ones

Scarborough Link

Traction:
185 + Class 68/Mk5

Routes:

Liverpool - York via Manchester Victoria, Huddersfield and Leeds

York - Scarborough

Manchester Victoria - Manchester Airport via the Orsdall Chord

Manchester Piccadilly - Stalybridge via Guide Bridge

Edge Hill - Castlefield Junction via Warrington Central

Ardwick Depot

Longsight Depot

Again I'm pretty sure they sign the Calder Valley as a diversion and maybe some others but not 100% sure.

West Coast Link

Traction:
185 + 397

Routes:
Manchester Airport - Edinburgh Waverly via Preston

Longsight Depot

Just thinking about this - are there some TPE drivers who sign Manchester/Liverpool - Crewe? I know they were route learning last year and I see the 68/MKVs making ECS moves from there quite regularly.

A number of instructors from Piccadilly did I believe. No drivers based at Liverpool sign the 68s, nor does it look like they will do.

In normal times, 1N57 0505 York - Redcar runs via (and reverses at) Darlington. Presumably that is in the York TPE diagrams?

In Covid times it still does via Dinsdale (now Redcar is hourly). It’s listed in the York driver diagrams “Northallerton to Thornaby (via Dinsdale, avoiding Yarm)”

1N57 is a York crew. Redcar work is mainly covered by York crews (with only 1 or 2 Scarborough crews during the day).

I notice LNER perform regular changes of drivers on the Edinburgh to/from Kings Cross diagrams, yet York is not listed under LNER. Where are these drivers based ?

These will be drivers from all the LNER depots (except Edinburgh who don't go that far) who will work to York, have a break, and then work another train again. Plenty of drivers at plenty of TOCs have breaks at stations that there aren't traincrew depots located at. So long as there are the right facilities available, a driver can have a break there.

Thank you. Interesting stuff.
I had always assumed a Kings Cross driver would always operate right through to Scotland and vice versa.
Is this not possible due to duty time restrictions without a rest break or more to do with getting crew back to their home base at the end of duty ? It would be nice if a railway magazine could dedicate an article to crew rostering one time to give a little more background on how crews are rostered with a timetable, particularly when night stops away from base are to be minimised.

London to Scotland in one journey would be hard on the bladder! All TOCs have agreed max shift lengths, and agreed maximum length of time spent “in the chair” before a break.

LNER London drivers only go as far as Newcastle (even that could be up to around 3:30 for a stopper). Some Newcastle drivers (depending on link) sign the entire ECML. Newcastle has a “lodge link” where drivers work services to the highlands, lodge overnight, and then work back south the next morning.

Much the same on the WCML: London drivers only go as far as Preston. Preston drivers sign the whole route, but again, wouldn’t be expected to work a train all the way from Scotland to London.

As far as I know, the LNER Inverness lodge turns (they involve two drivers in a hotel there each night) are the last remaining lodge turns for a driver at a franchised passenger TOC left in this country. Caledonian Sleeper stewards and guards lodge overnight (or more accurately, overday in their case), but the drivers are from GBRF and based at local Depots. Opens Access TOCs Grand Central and Hull Trains drivers do lodge in London AFAIK, as those TOCs are too small to justify the expense of opening a drivers depot in the capital, but other then that all passenger drivers are normally rostered to get back home every day, and the diagrams set out accordingly.

Just a suggestion, but would it be possible to add in approximate driver establishments for these depots? Some of them will be in the hundreds and others you'll be able to count on one hand. I just thought it might be interesting and helpful for anyone using this thread when considering applying for jobs. Just a thought. I think this is a great thread anyway BTW.

One time a Preston Driver worked the entire 401 mile journey from Glasgow Central to London Euston, it wasn’t a normal timetabled working, it was Virgin Trains’s Charity Non Stop speed run in September 2006. There was another Driver on hand who was prepared to take over at some point on the journey if need be, but the same Driver worked it all the way without stopping. He made sure he didn’t have too much liquids before setting off from Glasgow...3 hours and 55 minutes as the run took...would have been a long time to have been sat cross legged!

Plymouth drivers used to regularly do that time without stopping on the 0948 Plymouth to paddington via Bristol which was I think 3hrs 50, but frequently ran late taking us over 4 hours.

Worcester Shrub Hill
Traction:
153, 170, 172
Routes:
Worcester - Kidderminster - Moor Street - Dorridge/Stratford on Avon
Birmingham New Street - University/Camp Hill - Bromsgrove - Worcester - Hereford

Right, couple of little things. We as drivers don’t sign Stratford via Dorridge. We do however sign Stratford via Whitlock’s End and the North Warwicks line. The guards sign both ways. Also, two little bits missing, we sign the road between Galton/Smethwick junctions into New Street through Arena tunnel. Finally, we go over St Andrews Junction and Bordesley to Tyseley Depot.

I have a collection of Redhill schedule cards, so the list won't be the full route card, just the routes that were on the schedule cards:

London Victoria to Redhill
Redhill to Reigate
Purley to Caterham
Purley to Tattenham Corner
Purley to London Bridge
and possibly the Tonbridge line?

The Bottom Link at Redhill that sounds like! I don’t think they go to Horsham anymore after Thameslink took over those services.

Top Link at Redhill I seem to recall sign all the way to Brighton, the West Coastway Route via Worthing to Littlehampton, the Arun Valley Line to Bognor Regis via Horsham. Not sure if they still sign GWR 165/6 traction and the North Downs route to Reading via Dorking Deepdene and Guildford.

Yeah! The schedule cards don't say the link as they're not the composite diagrams. I think GWR Reading drivers sign the 165/2s but I am not too sure (I believe the same for conductors as Redhill is now just drivers)

Last I heard Redhill drivers were still working some 165/6s to Reading. There may not be any Southern conductors there but there is a small GWR conductors depot to work some of these services as well.

I think I'll hold off posting though until I get a definite confirmation of what the routes are there, but thanks for the submission anyway!

Southern Redhill still provide 2 drivers per day (1 early shift and 1 late shift) to GWR for N Downs work. Traction is 16x, Route is Gatwick Airport to Reading Southern or Reading General.

GWR Redhill is Guards (Conductors) only, traction is 16x only, routes are as per above; plus Reading General to Basingstoke.

Three LNER drivers lodge per night, in normal timetable anyway.

Inverness: 1x NCL driver who works up to Inverness, takes set for fuel, lodges (9hr turnaround for lodging as you're deemed to be on duty throughout, rather than 12hrs any other time).

Aberdeen: 1x NCL driver who works up, takes set for fuel, lodges in hotel, works back next morning. 1x EDB driver who does the same thing. One works 1400 ex KGX and one works 1600 ex KGX, then next day one works 0752 ex ABD and other 0952 ex ABD.

Thanks. Are you able to confirm the rest of the routes and traction for Redhill please?

Interesting. I realised after I posted that I'd forgotten about the lodging at Aberdeen but I didn't know they'd managed to tighten up the inverness work to have the same driver work in and out overnight, and not have them pass to and from Aberdeen like they used to.
