I know this is a really stupid question but how do you use an e-ticket when travelling in a group? I have been using e-tickets on my mobile for a while now and find them very useful (except the problem of running out of charge of my phone) but I have never used them when travelling with a group of people.

Theoretically you should get a ticket per person, so if you were to buy tickets for 5 people including yourself, there would be 5 seperate tickets you would have.

If they're proper e-tickets, you could then forward these on to whomever is in your party if you wish, or you could keep them all on your phone.

Thanks. How do I forward the tickets to other people in the party.

Once the restrictions on travel are eased I am hoping for a family holiday, when travelling in a group especially with children I find it very stressful trying to get through ticket gates with paper tickets, the idea of having to pass a phone back through the barrier 5 or 6 times puts me off using e-tickets when travelling in a group.

If these are proper e-tickets, I imagine you will have an email containing either a hyperlink, or an attachment, or both. This email can be forwarded.
Once the restrictions on travel ..
There are no restrictions on travel at present; the only restrictions are on staying overnight (to be eased on 4th July)

I thought that with the severe reductions in capacity I thought public transport was for essential travel only. Not sure travelling in a large group with plenty of luggage to go on holiday is a good idea at present

There is no such concept of 'essential travel only' in the current Government guidance. See:

We have had several threads dedicated to this subject in the Covid 19 section.

While you can't go on holiday at present, due to restrictions staying overnight, you can from Saturday 4th July.

Like Yorkie said, if they’re proper e-tickets (booked through the likes of LNER or Transpennine) you can forward the PDFs to the rest of your party.

I have always bought all my tickets through CrossCountry and they download directly onto the app on my phone, I don’t know if they also email PDFs as well

Just for absolute clarity, make sure you are buying an E-ticket and not an M-ticket.

E-tickets are PDF documents which can be copied to other devices, emailed, or even printed if you so desire.
M-tickets are restricted to your account on the app of whichever TOC you bought it from and therefore would require you to pass the phone back and forth.
Of course, there is often someone working on the gateline who is willing hold the gate open for you with their staff pass, but this can't be relied upon.

CrossCountry do email PDFs of e-tickets in a separate email message after the booking confirmation one. The message also contains a link to add the tickets to Apple Wallet, very useful for iPhone users as you can easily access the ticket from your lock screen and not have to navigate through an app. These Apple Wallet tickets are something I would like to see more operators do.

Instead of passing a phone around family members, if you didn't want to make them get the tickets on their own phones, you could stand at the gate and let each family member through individually, then yourself last. Sometimes that may be easier than relying on them having the tickets ready to go on their own phones.

Sorry for the confusion, it would appear I have been buying M-tickets but Crosscountry do definitely call them E-tickets.
