E214 and the historic train didn't run yesterday due to flooding of the track between Eixo and Eirol, falling trees between Sernada and Macinhata do Vouga and flooding of the town of Águeda.
Tickets purchased for this service can be used on the rerun to be announced for January, or can be refunded up until the end of December.

Meanwhile:

This again...

Starting from January 1st EMEF will be fully integrated into CP - Comboios de Portugal, returning the engineering and maintenance unit back to its roots.

The Guifões workshops will also be re-inaugurated in January 15th, when the first Schindler cars are expected to roll out of the produc... "refurbishment line".

Some Sorefame 22-40 cars have also joined the queue for refurbishment at Guifões.

Appreciate the updates. I am very much looking forward to spending days sauntering up and down the Douro later in 2020.

Agreed. A very encouraging and progressive change of direction from CP (and, by implication, Portugal's government too).

January 15, 2020: Reopening Ceremony of the Guifões Workshop

Here's my coverage of the event, exclusive to RailUKForums:

Electric Locomotive CP 2600, Nr. 2601, completely recovered and functional. Another 4 units are being recovered in Contumil, all having multiple traction capabilities, which is going to be fundamental for the future Push-Pull operations.

This is how the 1940's Schindler cars are going to look like, retaining their late 1900's livery but with a complete reengineering of its electrical systems and heating, now using LED's and Lithium-Ion batteries, instead of the old incandescent lights and lead-acid batteries.
The interiors have also received a brand new moquette, replacing the old red coloured synthetic leather.
These cars will be used in the Douro Line starting this year.

A yet to be recovered Schindler car side-by-side with a WIP car already repaired and repainted, awaiting the electrics and interiors.

1rst Class CP 10-40 passenger car undergoing recovery. Another set of these cars will be recovered for operation in the Minho Line starting this year.

CP 0450 DMU built by Sorefame and refurbished by EMEF in the early 2000s. Currently undergoing R2 maintenance.
One particular unit (not this one) will be a fully re-refurbished prototype later this year.

A CP 22-40 2nd Class passenger car on the foreground and a CP 92-69 Luggage Car on the background. These two units will be modification prototypes.
The CP 22-40 car will be a prototype of a new generation Portuguese passenger car, and the concept will be later applied to remaining 22-40 fleet, as well as all Sorefame and Corail cars currently on the InterCity fleet.
On the other hand, the CP 92-69 car will be transformed into a driving car prototype, receiving a brand new cab for Push-Pull operations.

And this is the full workshop in a panorama view. It's prepared to receive 1668mm and 1000mm gauge trains and is also equipped with a spray booth, metalwork and carpentry. Attached to this workshop is a recovered canteen, administrative block with engineering offices and training room.

Besides the units mentioned above, these workshops will also be responsible for the mid-life maintenance of the CP 3400 EMU's (which had no place to receive this type of maintenance/refurbishment).

The old Fernave building, currently abandoned, will be reworked and expanded to become a brand new Railway School, R&D Laboratory and Business Incubator.

It's also within the expectation of both the administration of CP - Comboios de Portugal and the Portuguese Government to expand these workshops into a full-blown rolling stock factory in the future. (And I might have some responsibility in creating those expectations since some of my friends leaked my concept art to the aforementioned entities..)

EDIT: Some grammar corrections were made.

Nuno Freitas: President of CP - Comboios de Portugal
"Someone concluded that the State would save money by stop wasting money by paying rent to ITSELF."
Nuno Freitas talked about the time when the Guifões Workshops closed in 2011 in a cost reduction measure from the financial crisis that swept the country on the start of the decade. The infrastructure was owned by REFER (now Infraestruturas de Portugal) the State's railway infrastructure manager, and this space was rented for CP - Comboios de Portugal.

"We expect the train to show up, to show up in time, and to show up clean."
Another shot at the past, referring to the railway crisis of 2018, when several trains were suspended due to lack of rolling stock or an excessive number of malfunctions, or ran severely late, dirty and graffitied both on the inside and the outside. The problem persists today, although not with the same intensity as it did in that fateful year.
The plan now is to start by covering the three fundamental criteria:
  1. The train shows up, meaning services shouldn't be suspended so often by CP's fault;
  2. The train shows up in time, meaning services don't run late by CP's fault;
  3. The train shows up clean, meaning the interiors and exteriors should look and feel clean and comfortable.

Pedro Nuno Santos: Portuguese Minister for Planning and Infrastructure
"CP should return to be one of the biggest Portuguese corporations."
Pedro Nuno Santos believes that the company should get back to its roots and, not only become the big national company it once was but also go even further. The fusion by incorporation of CP and EMEF is part of this big plan, and there are talks of eventually rejoin the Railway Infrastructure section of Infraestruturas de Portugal back to CP - Comboios de Portugal, and recover the name CP - Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses.

"We should also lose the habit of limiting ourselves to importing everything we need. CP is going to fight, build, do, create!"
The company should also gain enough critical mass to operate and work on its own, independently of the State and both the Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure and Ministry of Finance, while at the same time contributing to the national economy and industry with the recovery, refurbishment and manufacturing of trains.

António Costa: Portuguese Prime Minister
"Five years ago we decided that the railways should become a priority again."
After years, even decades, of neglect, the Portuguese Prime Minister believes it is time to create a commitment for the railway sector in Portugal, not only because of its contribution to the mobility and lives of hundreds of thousands of people but also because of the environmentally friendly aspect of this mode of transportation, fundamental to achieve carbon neutrality.
With the 2020 and 2030 railway infrastructure plans in motion or planning, it is also time to invest in the railway operation.

"It's absurd to abandon perfectly working trains that could still do service, when other rich countries, like Switzerland and France, still use similar rolling stock (...) instead of importing, we're creating jobs and value in Portugal."
Referring to the vehicles currently under-recovery and refurbishment, that were abandoned for 5 to 20 years and were also planned for scrapping. The option of recovering this fleet means that investment is also being applied using the economical, technical and labour potential the country has to offer.
Also, the recovery of these passenger cars accounts to a cost of around 80 thousand Euro (£68.000) per vehicle, revaluing each to a market price or around 500 thousand Euro (£430.000). A brand new passenger car would cost more than 700 or 800 thousand Euro (£600.000 to £680.000).

"In 2019 we manufactured a total of 340 thousand cars, making Portugal a member of the Club of Car Manufacturing Countries. Our dream is to also to become, again, a Train Manufacturing Country."
This is a reference to the manufacturing of Renault and Volkswagen Group road vehicles in Portugal, alongside auto components for export. The Prime Minister believes that, as Portugal once did with companies like Sorefame, Metalsines, Cometna, EMEF and even CP itself, the country will return to be a railway vehicle manufacturer.

amazed how such old stock gets a new lease of life. In much of western Europe its max 30 years and then the scrap heap.
In Germany 111 and 143 class locomotives and double deck stock are going fast.
The 25 year old ICE2 are also on the death list.
Most 628 DMUs also lasted only 25 years.

Haven't had an opportunity to film/photograph by myself, but here's a video from another person of Nr. 2601 already running in training sessions at T-160:

I have no particular interest in Portuguese railways, but it's brilliant to see "old" stock being refurbished and sent back out. The before and after of that coaching stock in post #35 is something to behold. I wish we could have some of that attitude in this country.

Here in Germany a lot of good stock goes to waste when the TOC changes. So many 1990s dmus or Double deck stock that were publicly financed are heading for the scrap heap.

I think its wonderful to see that a railway company utilieses what they have.
Wealthier railways don't seem to bother.
Why can DB in Germany not convert excess double deck Regio stock into IC2? There is plenty of surplus and the technical differences are not that big. Also excess 146/112.2 class locos could have been used.
Portugal shows that a lack of cash can mean positive solutions beiing sought.

The price for a refurbishment looks very optimistic, but how refreshing to see a government applying common sense, besides creating secure worthwhile employment .[/GALLERY][/QUOTE]

Hello Gag!

The ex-Arco coaches will all have several modifications done to them.

One of them implies the complete removal of fibrolite (asbestos) panels installed in the vehicles.

Others are:
- The complete reengineering of the air-conditioning, heating, electrics, electronics, lighting and battery technology;
- Replacement of curtains, upholstery and foams;
- Redesign of the bar;
- Exhaustive bodywork repairs;
- Repainting.

All of the 51 coaches bought from Renfe cost a total of 1.6 million euro, with 6 million euro expected on their refurbishment.

That's about 8 million euro spent on a fleet of 51 coaches capable of 160 to 200kph speeds, or about the price of four to eight brand new coaches with similar characteristics.

Excellent stuff - once again much respect to CP... and thanks to you, Guigiaro, for your excellent posts.

That is indeed a bargain for the Portuguese tax- and fare-payer.

Great video, too - is that your work?

Thank you!

I wasn't the one who filmed that video. I've since returned to my workplace and, unfortunately, it isn't possible for me to follow these events up close.

I do try my best to relay information as soon as it reaches my hands.

Any ideas on timescales for introduction of stock, also on which routes and with which class of locos? Planning on a trip to Portugal but would rather wait a year if all this likely to be in traffic by then. However, if much longer term then may plan to go out sooner.

All trains from Porto to Pocinho from July 12 onwards will be made with loco-hauled trains. Namely English Electrics.
Three CP 2600 electric locomotives are ready to enter service by the end of July, with two 2nd Class and two 1st Class Sorefame cars tested and ready to go.
The first Arco cars should be refurbished by October, and they should enter service by the end of the year, or after the electrification between Viana do Castelo and Valença is live.

Yes, those are LEDs.
