It wouldn't have occurred to me to say that the 319s were 'getting' unreliable and breaking down, if anything I would have said that they've settled down quite a bit in recent times. When they arrived at first they seemed dreadful for such as door faults.
And yet the 319s are the only units I can think of which have had broken driver cab doors that wouldn’t close which resulted in an entire branch line being blocked.

If that’s unreliable I don’t know what is?! Thank goodness the 323s are staying and the refurbishment is actually starting to get somewhere

How many 323s are coming to Northern from West Midlands? Is it 26 or 17

WMT Are now keeping the 9 units that are not going to Northern and will be used on Wolverhampton to New Street and Walsall routes.

Is that a temporary move or more of a long-term thing? If the latter, has there been some sort of miscalculation as to fleet order numbers? Can't say it's a disappointment, they're good units in many ways.

What is the currently held view of the time that the class 323 units will be expected to remain in service?
Indefinitely: they aren't planned for replacement until at least the start of the next Northern franchise.

As for on WMT - I don't think anyone knows for definite, and honestly I'd find any definite statement hard to swallow at the moment given the severe amount of uncertainty these days

Judging by what's going on over on the Northern Unit Refurbishments thread they've been rattling through the 323s very quickly

Something which I meant to write here a while ago and forgot, was that though I like the Northern refurb in general they drastically need to put more padding in the seats. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone in their right mind would have thought removing padding from the seats as part of a refurb was a good idea.

If that's the case then i'm assuming via the freight only route between Walsall and Wolverhampton.

I have just been on two refurbished 323s. Had the first opportunity to realise how much nicer they are since hardly anyone was travelling. One of the better refurbs out there. Usbs and Wi-Fi will make them fit for the 2020s and beyond. Only the lack of air-conditioning may be an issue for some especially with mandatory wearing of face masks unless exempt.

That may be a blessing in his case; HVAC systems are known germ spreaders. (Opening hopper windows can be too, but it could just be mandated that staff open them, but I digress).

I'd go as far as saying that they'll survive until at least the end of the next franchise.
I agree. They've gained a reputation for being simple, no-nonsense units which are very well suited to the routes they serve and by EMU standards they're a long way from life-expired. I hear they're also quite well-liked by traincrews.

Please could you provide a source for this.
Is it particularly difficult to believe without a source? I'm not suggesting that it's evidence-based, but it is clearly realistic. We know that 17 units have been signed for by Northern. It seems unlikely that Northern could be persuaded to lease any more than the 34 in question given the rest of the electric only fleet in question. Nobody else is likely to have any interest in them, so it's near certain they'll be available at discount rates. Only staying at WMT and going off lease into store are likely.

It's not unbelieveable: it's just the kind of thing that people say speculatively and don't make clear that they're speculating.

I agree that, if WMT want about 20-30 more EMU carriages, then they are likely to take this fleet offered up to them on a platter for which they have drivers already trained, rather than attempting to procure anything else.

Sorry if bit off topic but from what I last seen believe from December they will route the Crewe to Birmingham round the Darlaston way but call at Tame Bridge Parkway before the new stations open by 2022. Would make sense the 323s being kept for the local services between Wolverhampton, Walsall and New Street. Would save the messy arrangement currently whereby we have LNWR units operating West Midlands Railway services.

That would be quite good fun if from December 2020 / May 2021 there were regular services from Tame Bridge Parkway to Wolverhampton.

With the right maintenance the 323s could continue to 2035 quite easily. They had big mid-life service in 2013 and 2016 so they could last another 20 years.

Well 2035 does fit in with the end of the next franchise, which going by the next franchise award also being 9 years, takes us to 2034.
