Coronavirus: Lockdown tightened in parts of northern England
Separate households will not be allowed to meet indoors in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire from midnight, the government has announced.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said an "increasing rate of transmission" had been identified in those areas.

"The spread is largely due to households meeting and not abiding to social distancing," he said.

He also said the same restrictions will apply to the city of Leicester.

The areas that will have tighter restrictions are Greater Manchester, Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Rossendale, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees.

"We take this action with a heavy heart, but we can see increasing rates of Covid across Europe and are determined to do whatever is necessary to keep people safe," Mr Hancock.
There is to be a local lockdown in parts of Northern England, including Greater Manchester. Can't help but think this might have something to do with the raves?

I also wonder whether an increase in testing locally is catching more cases. Either way, this sucks and is a massive blow to the people of the city, as we move backwards yet again.
For the moment it seems the ban is on people from two households meeting in their homes, but people can still go to the bars, pubs and restaurants?

How are people from Manchester feeling about this, how will this affect your plans?

Stay sane, stay safe folks! This is likely gonna drag on for a long time... :|

What does "meet indoors" even mean...homes obviously but pubs? restaurants...etc, unless they're going to be policing that by asking for ID at the entrance not quite sure how that is going to be enforced!

I pondered the same thing about bars. restaurants etc

It isn't just people from Manchester - I am in one of the affected West Yorkshire areas (and have learnt of this initially via a Facebook group locally!) - in reality if it just a block on meeting in the house, it won't really affect us too much as we've only had one group of (socially distanced) visitors since the restrictions eased

I think it's more likely to do with Eid than the raves....
More likely due to a combination of high density housing and more instances of multi-generational homes.

I presume something like this has to rely largely on voluntary compliance.

I wonder how good that will be?

If it's largely due to households meeting and not social distancing, is this going to change behaviour?

(Rhetorical questions)

That's the overall issue, but Eid al-Adha is over the next 4 days (starting today), and just like Christmas (which is going to be a big, big problem) people will meet in large family groups in each others' homes, spreading it around nicely.

At least encouraging such meetings to be outdoors (because it's summer) will help.

Meeting in homes can be avoided for those who aren't carers. Not sure about wider restrictions.

These are all the so called Red Wall places, right? There is bound to be speculation amongst those affected that any similar outbreak that occurred in the southeast would trigger less prescriptive responses than “lockdown”.

I think suggesting that this is a political move is a bit disingenuous, to be honest.

I am, as usual, awaiting the legal text of the S.I., which has in the past diverged considerably from the announcements.

Every other introduction or lifting of a restriction has come with days of notice. This one is with three hours notice. The day before Eid. Of course they won’t admit that isn’t a coincidence

Bradford is hardly red wall territory. Last election one seat went blue from red, but everyone was surprised it went red in 2016! Otherwise no change.

A number of areas around Kirklees are Blue, so I doubt this to be anything to do with it

It very obviously is not a coincidence. Eid starts today; I suspect a bit of "oh, ****" about tonight.

BBC has said the opposite. Some logic to that, because restaurants etc can police social distancing (whether they do I cannot say from personal experience).
The issues are supposedly to do with large gatherings in homes, and that seems plausible.

Some are, some aren't - Shipley constituency, in which I live, is traditionally Tory, and is presumably within the Bradford lockdown area. Not the only one.

You mean like Quarantine from Spain and Luxembourg?

No. Some are labour and always have been, some are Tory, some are previously Labour now Tory, so that stamps out that theory

Oldham has had these restrictions for a few days. However it once again comes down to not having a strategy with honest reporting and targets so people are aware what is going on and how any increase in daily rates will affect daily life.

What happened to the 1-5 scale? Etc.

I read today Sandwell are now going to operate their own track and trace as cases are rising and the centralised system just isn't working.

I am not suggesting that the government would decide to place measures on cities for political reasons rather than a genuine outbreak. It is not however implausible that there might now be outbreaks nearer Westminster which are dealt with by reshuffling resources to cope or other soft (granular, not blanket) measures.

Certainly, whilst I presume there are genuine reasons for the measures, the first thing I thought was “there are going to be a lot of upset northerners on the radio tomorrow morning”

I think this will be the tipping point. A hot day forecast tomorrow and a very difficult one potentially

Local BBC Yorkshire news has just confirmed it includes meetings between different households in bars, restaurants and other enclosed spaces.
