Is Google blocked on your departments web filter?
In my experience, Google is unable to explore my department's internal intranet.

Are you, perhaps, thinking of the various cards that are issued to members of the CSMA or CSSC? Because those aren't the civil service, any more than the AA is all motorists. They're organisations that civil servants can pay to join.

It doesn't need to "explore your departments intranet" I'm not talking about the CSMA or the CSSC.its called my lifestyle is provided by edenred limited under contract to the civil service or the crown commercial service on behalf of the civil service. .

This bits not easy to google: the cost of providing these schemes based on foi requests to other public sector operators who use them is between £1 million - £5 million often they are bundled together with other recognition schemes like long service rewards and rewards for exemplary contributions to the organisation.

The company charges for the infrastructure to provide these discounts not the discounts themselves. To avoid benefit in kind taxes

I have been informed that a Veterans Railcard is being introduced as of 1st October. £30 a year with a £9 discount for the 1st year available until the end of March. Not sure how we will have to prove we are Veterans.

This is the email I received:

We are very pleased to announce the upcoming launch of a new Railcard for Veterans!

Like other Railcards the holder will benefit from 1/3 off most rail fares but an additional companion will also benefit and up to 4 children can travel with you at a 60% discount.

The Railcard is due to launch in October for travel from early November at a special introductory price of just £21, saving £9 on the original retail price until 31 March 2021. It will then retail at £30 a year from 1 April 2021 onwards. A three year card will also be available for £61 instead of the usual price of £70.

To find out more and to check if you are eligible head over to the Veterans Railcard website, where you can also register your interest and we will keep you updated with news on the launch.

So basically same as family & friends except that there is no need for a child to travel?

No, a Family & Friends railcard allows up to three other adults rather than just one as this one appears to. Looks like someone's being careful to maintain the rule that no two railcards have identical terms and conditions!

Edit: I must correct myself; the Devon & Cornwall Railcard also allows up to 1 accompanying adult and/or up to 4 children. But it's only valid in Devon & Cornwall so obviously not exactly the same terms and conditions.

And I also missed at first look: it has the minimum fare rule of the 16-25 Railcard.

Not surprisingly, the conditions for the Veterans Railcard are based on the HM Forces Railcard. The key differences being that it can be bought online or by post, and the ability to take an accompanying Adult with you (though it's unclear whether they have to be named like on the Family & Friends and Two Together Railcards or not).

In addition, the £21 launch price is the same as the HM Forces Railcard, though there's no three year option for the latter.

From the conditions,
4.2. One Railcard will be issued to a named Veteran aged 16 years or over. The cardholder can also nominate one adult companion to be named on the Railcard. The name of the cardholder and the named companion must be provided at the time of purchase – if you purchase a Railcard without a named companion, you cannot add a named companion later.

Thanks. It doesn't really shock me that much given their attitude towards rover and ranger tickets, certainly in the earlier days.
It's not a good look for Grand Central, refusing to offer veterans a (smallish) discount. I wonder if they'll give in and accept the railcard?

Accompanying adults do not need to be named on the Family and Friends card although there is the facility to name a secondary cardholder who can use the card when you don't require it.

Yes indeed, I mean I was joking when I said there was a rule that no two railcards can have the same terms and conditions but by including subtle little twists in the rules like this (i.e. that an accompanying adult is only allowed if named on the card) it would really make you think somebody somewhere is doing their best to keep it confusing!

so to be clear, with this one you can have a named accompanying adult, but they don't have to accompany you every time? I.E. the discount is available for them when they're with you, but solo travel using it is permitted as well?

4.4 You can use your Railcard to buy discounted tickets for journeys on your own. You can also use your Railcard to buy discounted tickets for a named adult companion and up to four children travelling with you.

4.5 The maximum group size is the named cardholder, the named companion and four children aged between 5 and 15 years. The group must travel with the Railcard holder throughout the journey.

4.6 The named companion and/or accompanying children cannot travel without the cardholder.

Yet new starters to Network Rail, who actually work for the railway, get no discount at all on Leisure Travel. Joke.

Then take it up with your union and employers.
Got Safeguarded Travel mate. Just seems odd that the railway looks after others, before its own. And its been taken up with Union and Company for around 17 years to no avail.

A new starter with NR cannot get "Safeguarded Travel". I worked for them for 10 years and couldn't get it either.
