I was under the impression that the post-SWR destinations for the threw surviving 483s had been firmed up?
“Surviving” may be overstating it a bit - more like twitching corpses.

It's just occurred to me that photos/videos of the 484s running pre-upgrade will be incredibly rare, especially in daylight - I can't be the only one who assumed there'd be more opportunities before the closure.

did wonder for a moment when all trains where out of action and busses replaced them, that that might have been it so nice to see another running again

they have been running (one train anyway) again today...

Yep, it was looking rather dicey given the low temperatures but it does look like they'll get through to the end - alas with the Island now in Tier 4, and justifiably so, there'll be few around to mark it.

But by going by current form who knows what will happen tomorrow.
I'll think they'll make the effort though.

The Facebook Group Railways of the Isle of Wight seems to be updated by a few who are local. The webcam may well have a record high number of viewers.

One of the reasons for at least some bus substitutions Tuesday - Thursday was ice both conductor rail, tripcocks and trains. One morning an early train ran at least Ryde St Johns - Pier Head & return but then bus substitutions until 11:48 from the pier. We can only hope the temperature stays above freezing tonight.

Reading the stock history on various websites a de-icing car was created from the VECTIS stock but since that was withdrawn there has not been one.
Unless de-icing is added to one of the 484 units this issue will remain. For both traditional and (more) modern motors and control systems dropouts can not be good.

Just watched a 2 car class 483 head off to Pier Head on the web cam, service appears to be running today on one unit basis for the last time.

noticed 007 appears to have its roof and hand rails repainted white, and theyve either cleaned the rest of it very well or re painted it

i thought that was just for today but there where pics from earlier in december with its newly painted roof and hand rails i think

It's just returned from a lengthy overhaul, the paintwork is actually several years old but it's been inside being worked on.

On the other web cam they have just zoomed to The Pier head, I think I counted about 20 people getting off to take photos etc..

Direct link to the second webcam which today is being operated to track each train on the pier rather than scanning right across the Solent.

EDIT @ 11:45

Now a fixed view of the pier, maybe it will be operated again later on.

EDIT @ 11:50

Operated for the departure.

The vast, vast majority are being sensible but some facebook comments today sadly suggest there's still a small minority deliberately and knowingly ignoring the rules. With the Island suffering one of the fastest growth rates in the country, going from Tier 1 to 4 in the space of a week, there's really no excuse.

Up the creek
Even though it is only a short ride away and I could have squeezed the trip in as part of a shopping trip to the Tesco above Ryde, I have given it a miss. The possibility of too many people milling about was more than I was prepared to risk, and I am normal fairly relaxed about the distancing situation.

Given the explosion in cases today - 459 - that was very wise! https://www.countypress.co.uk/news/18983431.biggest-covid-daily-rise-ever-isle-wight/

All I've been able to get today are some photos while out walking, it's not the same as riding onboard but at least I've got some record of the last day while avoiding contact with others. The destination boards they're sporting are a nice touch:

I was lucky to ride on them in September and it was the first time I travelled on them, took the opportunity to go on them several times over the 8 days I was there.

Hopefully will experience them again st either Epping-Ongar railway or IOW Steam Railway.

I strongly advise not reading the comments on the article linked by @DavidGrain unless you're in the mood to lose a braincell or two.

One commenter is complaining that they should have used a contractor on the IoW to produce the trains (because yes, an island which is 20 miles from end to end , with less than 15 miles of mainline railway, no land-based link to a larger market, and a population of less than 150,000 is going to have the workforce, facilities and demand for lots of train-building capacity, sure...)

while another seems to think that they won't fit through the Ryde tunnel (evidently unaware of the fact that these things are checked and planned in advance).

*sigh*

I expect that people will still be saying that even when the 484s have been back and forth a few times, it comes up that often...
