Interestingly the track at Pier Head was raised in 1966/67 (rather than lowering the platforms as was done at Esplanade) so presumably they could have chosen to lower it back down again.
Perhaps to adjust the track would need a lot more overall length being changed, in order to keep gradients legal wrt current standards?

The pier was extensively rebuilt at the time, along with major changes to the station, so it must be a lot simpler just to build up the platform surface this time. It needs work on it anyway.

and for those Doubting Thomas's out there, they confirm 4-car trains

I read it as though it could accommodate 4-car trains, rather than they will be 4-car trains, for example, during periods of high demand.

"The proposed platform overlay must cover the length of a 75m long train (two 2 car class 484 trains coupled together) plus braking and stopping distance allowances. Approximately 81m of full depth platform overlay has been identified as being required plus a length of transition to existing at a suitable grade at each end of the platform. The existing London end limit of operational platform will require extending 13m towards London and gate/railings repositioned."

I hadn't noticed those, at least it shows they're making some progress so fingers crossed we'll see one for Brading imminently... and for those Doubting Thomas's out there, they confirm 4-car trains.

(20/02182/LBC and 20/02161/LBC for anyone looking on the planning portal)

...hang on, platform gap fillers at Pier Head?
I thought Esplanade would have more of curve?

Which station is the above post refering to?

I was just saying the infrastructure will allow 4-car trains to run.

Pier Head. The curve at the end is short but very sharp, presumably more than Esplanade?

I know it's more or less correct, but there's something rather hilarious that the term "London end" is used

That's something they couldn't say when they were trundling up and down the District Line!

so would have been easier and cheaper to just buy and use 3 car sets??? no expensive platform mods in that case
vivarail have got quite a lot of spare D78 centre cars with no takers

The platform is physically there at Esplanade (after all it used to be 7 cars), just needs the barriers blocking it off moving.

3-car units wouldn't fit in the shed at Ryde.

From the Facebook group one reason for the service being suspended today was flooding on the lowered track under the Rink Road bridge. While exceptional rainfall from storm Bella a comment states that independently changes have been made also been made to as part of flood work by the environment agency. Hopefully this will be investigated and a solution implemented by the end of March.

I have tried but I can't create a link to the post, just the uploaded photos.

Uh-oh, isn't that one of the lines recently renewed and lowered as well? Hopefully there won't be any damage to the bed and the line can re-open for the last few days (if it's even worth the effort?).

Indeed it is, I can't see why the environment agency works would have any impact - this is just the natural consequence of creating a sump by lowering the track, so the water isn't draining away very well. Services are running again so seems no significant damage has been caused by the recent weather.

Now that the line is closed for 3 months, is there anywhere which is providing daily or weekly updates on the line's work?

Not as far as I know. Indeed in the middle of a national lockdown it is difficult to image who would be able to, other than Network Rail or SouthWestern Railway. As far as the public is concerned, we don't even know precisely what work is to be carried out on what date, so even if people could visit worksites, there's no way of telling which ones they should visit. There is a "railways of the isle of wight" facebook group which has island residents, and some railway staff, amongst its members. This might be the best place to look, but inevitably can't supply a complete picture.

From what I've seen out walking Lake is the current focus of attention, with platform rebuilding underway and the shelter dumped at Sandown. They've also removed the coping stones and tarmac from the island platform at Brading though the footpath and crossings remain open for now. Perhaps more work is underway at Shanklin, but like Brading progress must be limited without Listed Building Consent.

No sign of any work going on at Esplanade and St Johns Road (the latter only seen from buses) this afternoon. St Johns Road looked just as it normally did when trains were operating.

I glanced at one of the live cams earlier this afternoon and there were people in orange on the pier tracks, looked to be examining rather than anything complicated though.

Interesting. I'm guessing that Lake and Smallbrook Junction stations were both built with platform heights tailored to tube stock in the first place, and will therefore need a fair bit of height adjustment.

Correct, I think they're going for 1100mm so that's quite an increase.

Very little happening in Ryde today. At Esplanade the platform entrance was blocked off by red plastic ‘crowd control’ type barriers, although the PIS was still working, advising anybody who could manage to read it to consult the printed timetable and telling the time. There were four more barriers, blue this time, on the track: one was standing proud, but the other three had fallen over. Not much was visible at St Johns Road: several of the old trains were still sitting around the yard and there appears to be a warning for a TSR at the south end of the southbound platform. Of human life was there none except in Esplanade booking office.
