Anyone from GTR with any knowledge of the above role? From what I understand, it’s mid way between a driver instructor and a driver manager kind of role. They also get to maintain their driver status / licence in addition to the management side of the role. I’d be grateful for any useful information.

It's been a while since I was at GTR but this role used to be the competency checker and assessors for drivers. At GTR when I was there DMs didn't assess you they just did the pastoral stuff.
CDMs travel the network with a tablet that tells them which drivers are due which assessments and what duty they are on, and they will be there waiting for you on the platform.
Like I said it's been a while since I was there, but that was how I remember it.

GTR unlike other companies like Arriva London has 2 managers for the train driver... Line Manager who is mainly administrative and Competence Development Manager [CDM] who deals mainly with managing driver's driving competence. At Arriva London, the Driver Manager role is a combination of both roles. At GTR a Driver Manager role has 2 people. Only a CDM need to have driving competence, Driver Line Manager only need people management skills...CDM earns higher than train driver and driver instructor. Driver Line Manager earn something like 40k

I’m at Thameslink which is ‘part of GTR’.
Posters on here should explain which actual TOC they are talking about because Thameslink do not have a driver line manager or driver manager.
We have an area Ops manager (I think that’s the title!) who oversees more than 1 depot and doesn’t drive.
A LOM at every depot (basically does admin) and doesn’t drive.
A CDM at every depot (more than 1 depending on driver numbers) who does drivers assessment’s, rules etc and does drive.
I cannot comment on other GTR tocs such as Southern, Gatwick Express or GN.

OK thanks.

I’m referring to a Thameslink CDM. Seen a couple of adverts for CDM very recently at Luton and St Albans. Thanks for the info.
Surprised at the no driver managers there and didn’t realise other driver line management where you are that don’t drive. But good to know as a CDM one can keep their driver competence.
Do you know why the CDM jobs are being advertised externally as opposed to internals taking / wanting the roles?

YOU HAVE JUST REPEATED WHAT I SAID .... London Overground has 1 manager who does both LOM and CDM roles ...2 in 1, Northern up north same, etc. I am GTR Southern and Gatwick Express division. Driver Line Manager is what you are calling LOM.

Cheers for the info.

I think they want to keep their train drivers driving trains. As they say many are kicked upstairs for having **** ups and they still need their experience.

So I am not repeating what you have said then!
Driver line manager is a term that is, and never has been used at Thameslink.
A LOM (as it is called, not driver line manager) does not earn 40k either, nowhere near it. (at Thameslink)
A DM earns approx 69k (about £500 more than a DI)

Do you know whether a Thameslink CDM (as they have to maintain driver competence) is on a drivers conditions contract or a management contract?

Different terminology and the same meaning... CDM is what you are calling DM and LOM is what we call Driver Line Manager...

remember as drivers Thameslink and Great Northern have different terms and conditions with Southern and Gatwick Express

Wouldn’t have the foggiest except afaik, managers are not aslef members so probably are on different t’s and c’s.
(I could be totally wrong though!)

obviously, as the job the title says CDM [COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER], how can you manage and develop the competence you don't have?

They will be the management, of course, no overtime, Sunday/bank holiday working no Aslef membership... so train drivers end up earning more after Sunday and rest day working

You’ve missed some of the convo / job description it seems. A competency development manager (CDM) with Thameslink at least, is a competent, experienced qualified train driver that is required to maintain their train driving competency as well as managing other driver’s competency by assessing them on rules and drive outs. Train driving IS a competence a CDM has.

I didn't miss anything, yes CDM must be a very experienced qualified train driver and will be required to maintain his train driving competence. Do you know that managers including CDM do not get paid EXTRA for working Sunday, bank holidays, rest days, etc? If the CDM pay is £69 000 then a train driver on £63 000 will end up earning more than him working mandatory Sundays, bank holidays, and rest days

****Him or Her****

That was one of my original questions about the type of contract a GTR TL CDM is on to answer the points on overtime, RDW, BH’s and Sunday’s etcetc. From what I understand a CDM role is pretty much Monday to Friday with no weekend work or bank holidays included. I didn’t know the other details until you just mentioned it above. Thanks for the info.
