New Smart Kiosks will issue advance and walk-up tickets as a printed barcode, rather than the normal orange paper tickets.
Has anyone used one of these new EMR smart kiosks? I would love to see what the tickets look like.

Do they intend to use these in addition to proper ticket machines or as a replacement for them?

I look forward to these being installed at Sheffield station, might be able to buy tickets for journeys that don’t originate to/from Sheffield itself.

I wonder if you will be able to buy rover/ranger and TfGM Wayfarer tickets, as Sheffield Station ticket office staff refuse point blank to do!

They are card payment only ticket machines for use in locations with no ticket buying facilities and very low footfall. Stations like Peartree. They can also apply tickets to Smart Cards. As they do not take cash and do not offer Ticket on Departure Colllection (with a code) there are no plans for them to replace machines at larger stations, though who knows what might change in a few years time.

EMR have the stupid situation of not having ToD on their main machines, you have to use the separate collection only machines for ticket collection.

We were the other way round , had machines that only did ToD and machines that did everything. We found it was better value to upgrade the ToD only machines to be able to retail tickets.

The EMT S&B big TVMs used to be able to do ToD (in fact were much more reliable than the separate 'ToDler machines) so it must have been switched off in locations with both, those that only have the bigger TVMs still can do ToD on them.

EMR guards can also fulfill ToD on the train, should they choose to do so (some refuse to use it, long story).

This isn't correct. You can still collect ToD on the main ticket machines in all locations as long as the Internet connection is working. The ToD machines are cheaper to operate than the S&B machines so it's a cheaper way of reducing waiting times.

While I'm all for this - I think it's the way forward - EMR seem to be overblowing it massively.

It's a TVM, but it prints barcode tickets rather than magstripe ones. That's it. The average passenger won't care in the slightest. Which is precisely the reason why I think all TVMs across the country should go this way, but also precisely the reason why there is no need for a smug, self-congratulatory press release about it.

Also, is it me or do you have to put your ITSO card in a slot on the side of the machine in order to have tickets fulfilled to it? What a ludicrous bit of design!

There's only one screen!

I'd kind of assumed that you'd just pop the card in, hear a beep and remove it, just like collecting a product while passing through a ticket barrier? No need to use the screen?

There is a smartcard reader on the front as well which would suggest this is the case.

I assume the reason it doesn't do ToD is because it can't differentiate between tickets it can do and tickets it can't (i.e. via London)?

That's the idea - it allows smart card fulfillment while someone is using the main screen.

You'll have a long wait, they are only going to be installed at stations with no other ticket selling facilities.

The linked article in the OP says they have been installed at Derby & Uttoxeter.

The EMR press release at the top of this thread says that one of these kiosks will be sited at Derby Station, which was certainly staffed last time I was allowed to travel by train.

That must have changed earlier this month. Up until the end of December I had been collecting from the large TVMs (i.e. those which also sell tickets) at Sheffield.

Its not staying, its being trialled so any kinks are ironed out. Eventually the machine will be moved elsewhere.

The one at Derby will be relocated to Spondon. Most but not all stations will get them - some lightly used stations east of Nottingham won't be getting them - Bleasby, Thorpe Culvert etc.
