I've completely forgotten what services the SE 377s run, so I'd appreciate some help here. I know they run from Victoria to Ashford, and I'm pretty sure they run out of Gillingham, but I don't know which London station they go to. Do they or have they run/ran any other services, even if they were one-offs?

I believe they do select workings on Charing Cross - T Wells & Charing Cross - Folkestone/Dover as well.

377s operate almost exclusively out of Vic. I've seen ONE 377 service at London Bridge with Southeastern...

A few peak services from Charing Cross towards Ashford International were formed of 377s. AFAIK they aren't allowed through Folkestone tunnels.

Generally you’ll find them on Victoria-Maidstone-Ashford-Canterbury West pretty much exclusively. They don’t tend to deviate. I have seen them on a couple of other routes or showing different destinations but I can’t recall where or when. I think, but I might be wrong, they are still maintained at Selhurst. If they aren’t then I see them there for something quite a lot.

Considering they are pretty much the same as a 375, I wonder why that is?

Last year (before Covid) there was at least one peak time Charing Cross - Folkestone service (formed from an Orpington - Charing Cross additional service)

I doubt it's because they don't fit (although the external CCTV cameras could be an issue); it's probably more due to them never being cleared for the route as they weren't intended to run on it.

They've certainly been used on some Ramsgate to Vic via Chatham services, but that was a Saturday. Also been used on a Sunday between Vic and Rochester.

The last time I was in London I saw two pairs of 377/5s run through London Bridge during the evening peak. Was this particularly uncommon then?

It’s not the most common sight but it does happen.

As a current Maidstone resident I can confirm others on here saying they are the dominant class of the Maidstone East line, running from VIC-AFK/CBW. However there are not enough of them to run every service on that line and the odd 375 working still happens, especially in the peak, with MDE terminators being Networkers as well.

I also recall when the 466 derogation kicked in, that saw their days of branch line operations end, the shuffling of rolling stock around to accommodate this change saw the one train a day that runs non-stop between Tonbridge and Ashford become 2x377s in place of 375s, where a couple of Chatham Mainline peak services that were 377s became a Networker run in their place.

Being as the routes south of the Thames is like a totally foreign country to me, and I am aware there are a lot of 377s, is there a particular subclass or certain number range of the fleet that are with Southeastern?

All of the 377/5 subclass that was formerly with Thameslink, and 377163 and 164 all as part of a common fleet

May I ask when this service runs? Is it part of a normal Charing Cross to Ramsgate/Dover service?

I don't know the exact times, particularly as it doesn't run under the current Covid timetable, however it's normally just after the morning peak in the down direction only.

There is also a Class 377 ECS move between Ashford and Folkestone East Train Road early on weekday mornings (approx. 6.30am leaving Ashford depot) which forms a direct service from Folkestone Central to Victoria via Maidstone East. Not sure if it will continue with new reduced COVID timetable.

Yes it is part of a normal service. It used to run every week day at 09:22 from Charing Cross calling at Waterloo East, London Bridge, Orpington, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Ashford International and then all stations to Ramsgate via Canterbury West. I caught it one morning in 2018 on my way home from Stansted, having wanted to catch it for a long while although had never needed to travel back from London at that time of day before.

We flew through the fast lines at Paddock wood and Headcorn at such great speed that we arrived into Ashford early. I have no idea why they decided to run such a useful service at that inconvenient time.

In the next time table change it was cut back to Ashford only but the same calling pattern was kept. Until 2010 the original hourly fast services were non stop between Waterloo East and Tonbridge.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any other similar services which is a shame. The new franchise includes semi fasts, not quite the same as back in the day though. For now this is the only remaining Tonbridge - Ashford fast service.

Its the return of a peak service in the morning - as you may gather from the 09:22 departure. As far as I know, it then sits up in Ashford and doesn't come back out again until the evening peak. So the intention is to get it back to the depot rather than have it run empty from Charing Cross and a still somewhat busy time in the shoulder peak.

at one time the fasts were non stop Waterloo (East) to/from Ashford (and had buffet cars in the BEPs, and laid over from xx20 arrival to xx00 departure in platform 6 at CX).
