When we first started our railway layout it was generic, We bought a number of Skaldale buildings, and realised some of them were modelled on real places, one set we had already purchased turned out to be Goathland, we initiated a Goathland style layout, then you get the bug, and keep trying to improve it.

These are all resin buildings, Hornsby SKaledale and / or Bachman, with pecorino 75 and DCC.

That looks really good! The little added details, like the menu board on the platform, make it even better than it would have been with just the buildings. I've only been to the NYMR once and didn't pay an awful lot of attention to Goathland, but from what I remember, your layout is a very good model of it.
A lot of people say you should make your own buildings for your layout, but this is an example of how a layout with pre-made buildings can look just as good as one which is primarily scratchbuilt.

Thank you for the kind comments, I have photos right back to the beginning, and the method we used to get this as good as we could, this is a second attempt at Goathland, and before that it was a generic station before we knew which buildings, the last time we used google earth to measure the station, the platforms lengths, the track size and measure it at 1:4mm. Rather than 3.5 mm but even then the first item on the table was the track and it was obvious all the detail could not fit in the given width and we had to widen it, but much of the items have a decent relationship to each other. We also originally had a permenant fixed scenic area, but if the track suffered it could be hard to go in and repair or even retrieve a derailment, so we have a part permanent part Lego lift off,in fact having gone to this effort we have yet to have issues and have not had to dismantle it,but could.

we added a matching scale grid to the base
545D3F33-1067-4256-A54F-A27D7879024E.jpeg

then used chalk for scenic placement, then insulation foam wit the silver removed, both side, if you only remove one side in warm weather the foam can curve wrecking the surface, remove both sides and this is. Not an issue.

I can see stopping people just endlessly posting has its merits,I have a high postage level on rm web just because I posted so much...grins....but it also means if people do not reply your to thread it just falls off, and in my experience people post more if they get replies, and can easily find their thread, I am purposely responding to those thread I like, then when they expand I know there is something worth checking out, here it would pay 2 modellers with a common them to share a thread as it beats the controls, but even then they need to have least one posting enough to keep it current. Anyway while I am here I will show one of my more offbeat projects the photos load in revers from my library so you see the later pictures first, caravan oh bugger I am also limited to 10 pictures in one post....bugger

We too are now electrified, but I love the tea wagons such scope for weathering, although my family who had a number of coal miners, even my dad for a short time holds more sway.
View attachment 90001
those rounded wagons lend them selves to dribbling dirt and rust.I just checked I have not done one myself yet,I did buy the water wagons but cannot bring myself to weather them lol, but they are on my to do list.
Your layout , your rules, but don’t your fingers just itch to rust them lovely babies :D
before you consign them to the e-bay / post, would you not consider having a play at weathering, unless you already did of course, a little distressing can do wonders, and you could consign them to a siding, abandoned as a by gone age.
So poetic, you are clearly an artist!

I like the mechanics, construction, wiring . . . . but the scenery, weathering, detailing . . . . hmmm, need to learn.

Your models are outstanding btw but no rust on your rails?

I have gone through a load of how not to....mistake I made and learned from are littered through my 1s of thousands photo library, so I can offer picture backup on any advice I offer, and am quite willing to address areas people ask about, helping them target searches for others advice, as my way is not the only way. ?I have still lads to lear, my husband does the DCC and track control and modelling as he has time, As for the track, our layout is almost 44 foot long, areas are in different levels of production, so I tend to move from area to area, trial different idea, modify options as ones become more successful.....I have several stations on the go,several more spaces for other planned layouts with a bunch of scenic items ready to go as time allows, plus we are not beyond ripping out and restarting, plus I am now blowing YOUR layout with my pictures, so I will remove them after you answer, so as to not ruin your thread, I tend to move about chatting to new people getting new ideas, because people who are not in the same areas can have clever fresh ideas, many of which I have successfully implemented, I go on warhammer, war, history, scenic forums to find useful ideas and incorporate them, I did have my own Facebook group but left it in the safe hands of a fellow modeller who has improved enormously and now sells his superb scratch built buildings, producing For people one off real station buildings that are not yet manufactured by the big boys.I do several eras, do them vanilla and have optional tongue in cheek add ones, having gone through a lon learning curve I find much in others work to admire, and readily show my own work and how I did them as people often offer useful tweaks :) all stations are designed to run trains or have roads through the whole and I keep intending to have the cars that can be run like small scaletrix once I stop tearing the roads up lol.

i bought a train set early 2000, but in 2009 we boarded the loft and my husband got the set and said it was not good on the floor so we got in wood for the first table, then he got the bug,he trialed some ideas, then asked if I would do him a little cottage, with a garden,my dream cottage he said the cunning fox, then I got pulled in too, it is lovely sharing a hobby, we both have our strengths our skills and sone overlap, occasionally we have a go at the same thing but as I paint better he normally concedes defeat and tells me how he would like me to do his idea....again cunning fox LOL. He has good electronics and electrics skills but his job means that and running our home at the moment means he has almost no time for the layout, though he does want to get back into it,so 10 years the layout has developed in fits and spasms are we model or play Warcraft or eve or a n other plus our allotment and keeping animals, and often those other things and watching tv inspire models. Goathland is set in the 6os because of Heartbeat, Kalborough has a flavour of Peterborough, with the number of lines although not an Art Deco station, but with the Nene Valley nearby it has any number of preservation locos rumble by and we use that excuse for the older trains, so with Kalborough almost present day we can get away with blue murder :D
Ah OK - sounds like quite the journey into model railways! :D
I love the idea of having different areas of the layout with different times and themes: something I thought about doing on my layout but I wasn't too keen on the trackplans I had. I run what I want on my layout, but having a heritage line does give some form of basis for why so many different engines/units run around!

@Jaz avalley - I’ve popped a few of the posts into the thread about your railway because it’s good to have the photos of it in the one thread so that people can see them together.
Excellent work by the way. It’s got some fascinating little details on it. :)

Anything unusual that I see I can incorporate or try and with the least excuse to do I will have a go, I have come across any number of suppliers who have great kit out there

i had a second go at this with Greengrass, the model car, the pub, people fill in the dots, they rarely criticise and most have a smile and immediately join up the dots, it is not about perfection it is about jogging people’s memories, then the association immediately gives them happy memories win win

I must admit that I’m finding it quite intriguing too Jaz. As well as the interesting cameos the standard of modelling is also excellent.

I can cover a lot of options so if people have specific elements of scenery they want to discuss I can either pop up stuff I have or am ready to discuss options I have not yet tried, the chances of finding something new to do is of value to me as I like looking for new ideas and trying them, so win win

weathering and updating is my favourite, but not all I do

You can use birch seed if you have birches anywhere near you
you can colour them but even the plain brown ones give a good dead leaf look

as an aside the reference picture for this
and the black model before I repainted it red as I fell in love with the picture and had to have a go at modelling this graveyard picture

FYI I model in 00 but this car was an O gauge model but it shows the seeds off well

More brilliant work @Jaz avalley - I particularly like the abandoned engine in the second-to-last picture. Is it a Triang 'Nellie'? :)

Choosing donor cars is worth effort, I go for ones with plastic front lights and the better looking ones as they give better results.

As a kid we owned 3 vW beetles,my day was totally ruined if I did not get a high five back from other vw owners, and my dad would let me steer as he drove and put my foot across on the acceleration pedal as a parent myself now I cringe lol,we used to tease him that he did not know how to empty the ashtray so had to buy a new one, black, green, red also a vW variant and a vow Passat which he later gave to me,some crashed into me but it was so well built it took a hit but saved my life. Gotta love a vW. I have owned some great Cars.

Absolutely fantastic. You have so much talent.
Thank you for the replies,we have modelled for about 10 years and I research in all sorts of forums finding people kind enough to show off and share how they do stuff, some of what I thought was original ideas I found others do,it is nice to share if anyone wants step by steps so they can have a go please say I am more than happy to show how I did mine, people can then also adjust to their own skills or preferred products which is the norm amongst people trading and showing ideas, not unusual for people to do better and the idea evolves so win win.
The ’leaves’ birch seed I bought in 3 colours at a fair but knew they were seeds as we have an arboretum and I recognised the seeds straight off,so now keep the coloured ones for best use and my own gathered free ones for miscellaneous scenic junk.
I also find models are often much better if repainted with attention
